Emoji

Emoticons (顔文字 (かおもじ, “Emoji”) are facial expressions pictorially represented by punctuation and letters in order to express the mood the writer is currently in. The term “emoticon” blends the words emotion and icon. Emoticons are frequently used in text messages on cellphones, in emails and on internet fora where they are often rendered as smiley graphics (like on the Japan Forum). In Japanese language the are referred to as emoji or rather kaomoji (かおもじ). Often they consist of surprisingly complex combinations due to the usage of double-byte characters. Find a selection of common emoji below.

Keitai emoticons

Japanese mobile phone providers offer a wide range of emoticons and graphical images on their devices. iPhone emoji use the same character codes as Softbank emoji but are slightly modified
with an iPhone replacing the generic clamshell mobile and no emoji animation.

The colored square emoji, between the arrows symbols and the zodiac symbols

Which Japanese symbols do you refer to, Cyriaque?

Hello, I would like to know what the Japanese symbols mean in the iPhone emoji of Apple… Is there someone who know?

A little update: any screen resolution <840px will now trigger the mobile display. People on desktop PCs and smartphones should now be able to view the standard table format, while users on older devices will be served the mobile version.

If you still experience any issues, please post them here.

Thanks again, folks! :)

Thank you, I appreciate it!

Yes, that table should actually show either on mobile devices or on screen resolutions <1280 only.

Let me tinker with this a little more.

omg hi thanks for your reply!

it looks like this when 100% view on Chrome and Firefox http://i.imgur.com/ueZENEY.png
i’m using 1440 x 900 screen resolution
the table become ok as previously when i zoom out a bit

As you may have noticed we have converted our content to WP.

According to our tests, the new font set did not negatively affect the appearance of the emoji. If it does then kindly send us a screen shot in order to visualize that behaviour.

EDIT: As for the tables: I confirm some strange behaviour on mobile devices, but we have tested the page with desktop computers on all browsers (IE, FF, Chrome, Opera, Safari) and couldn’t detect any unwanted behaviour. More info would certainly be appreciated: screenshot (if possible), device, OS, browser.

Thanks for your feedback!

can you guys please fix the table? the list looks weird now. i hope admins are still maintaining this page.

Why did they change this site’s font? It makes the emoji look weird now! I liked the old site for this much better. :(

Really useful and.. interesting… Ty for awesome emojis that we cant do.

Still .. copy-paste ~<3

WeekenderGirl

Thanks! Now I know how twofacedlover56 does it….except she’s actually Japanese.

No Name available :)

THIS IS AWESOME!! ( ゚▽゚)/

Thanks for all the cute emoticons.
