Well, I've been out of the jpop loop for a while now, but my favorite artist is still Shiina Ringo. I've pretty much worn Muzai Moratorium and Shouso Strip into submission (didn't care too much for the 3 disc 3 song 'album' and last I heard from her was Mayonaka wa Junketsu. Anyway, I heard there's a new album and that she did a cover album before that too O.o
So, can anyone tell me if they've heard either? What did you think of them?

I've heard both and i have to say that she's making giant leaps when it comes to her writing and production skills.
The cover album is great. Some of the songs were completely unrecognizable compared to the originals and the overall sound of that album was a taster for her next studio album.
On that next studio album she combined so many different (ethnic) styles and instruments, while maintaining a solid listener-friendly sound. Ah, can't really describe it, you have to listen to it. :)

 Ok, I totally need to get these now.
Sounds like it might have been worth the 3 year wait for a new album from her. Is it true that she also had a baby?? I guess that makes my chances of having her become my girlfriend somewhat lower...Anyone else here find her just totally sexy?? Must be the nurse outfit in Honnou
:p
So, is yesasia.com still the place to buy CDs or is there now a new and better place? I have so far downloaded all my Jpop except for her CDs...They're just so good :)
Twisted
Apr 6, 2003, 06:24
Yeah, she had a baby, but i'm not sure if she got married as well, so... :)
Heh, i'm officially a YesAsia associate since yesterday, but i've never ordered anything from them. I always use CD-Japan (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp). They were the first Japanese cd-shop i found on the net. They've always proven to be reliable and fast, so i haven't used anything else since.

Apr 6, 2003, 06:43
An associate? Meaning you got an account for them? lol
I'll give CD-Japan a try.
haha: http://www.radiobox.com/280zx/com130.jpg
I'm actually friends with this girl that looks like her....so cute and dangerous at the same time ^_____^
So, what's your favorite song of her? Mine is Memai (B side to Koko de Kisu shite). Best served on a cloudy day.
Twisted
Apr 6, 2003, 17:27
Well, associate actually means that you can now order cd's at YesAsia through my website. I will get 10% commission for every item sold through my site.
I can't really say what my favorite is, because i usually only listen to music in my car, which means i never see the tracklistings. Besides, it quite depends on my mood as well. :)

If you don't mind my jumping in on this conversation, I was introduced to her work with "Honno", but after getting Shouso Strip I've found that "Gibusu" has really grown on me... such a cool, seething song...
Twisted
Apr 8, 2003, 05:01
Gibusu was the first song i heard from her back in 1999. Took me a while before i finally found a full album, but i was sure glad i did.
alfred183
Apr 8, 2003, 06:12
Yeah, the first time I got introduced to her music was at my friend's house when he showed me the PV for Honnou. I had him burn me all the mp3s he had of her and I bought her 2 albums like 2 weeks later

Anyone know what's up with Ringo Shiina nowdays/lately?
Any information about new releases or upcoming concerts etc? Anything goes :)
I think there's not so many english ringo shiina pages that has recent information about her.
I am really BIG fan of Ringo Shiina and I would like to get to know anyone who likes her music

Live DVD sounds great :)
Anyone know where I can find information about her concerts?
Winter
Dec 21, 2003, 12:26
Didnt she recently have a child? Or was that Aikawa Nanase?
Regardless, Shiina rocks. No question there.
Wasabi
Dec 21, 2003, 18:35
Yeah she had a child but it was some time ago.. and I think she got married also.. =)
Anyway, I am planning to visit japan next summer and my one goal would be to got to see her live concert... I just dont know where to find information about her concert dates when the time comes.. *sigh*

It would be boss to see her in concert. She puts on stellar shows.
I'm going in November 04, and considering I'll be there for the rest of my days, I reckon I'll be able to see her live again; not that it really matters, I'm just gloating, ahahah.
Heh.

Dec 22, 2003, 15:47
You have seen her live? Do you know how much concert tickets costs in Japan?
Hmm... you just go to Japan and gonna plan to stay in there? What do you do and how that is possible? :) I assume you are older than me ;)
Winter
Dec 23, 2003, 03:01
I've seen her once live about 3 years ago. First time to the big J. best time of my life.
I probably am older than you. I know a bunch of people over there now who will help me out by giving me a place to stay, setting me up with a job, etc. etc.
I'm making the move to pursue my visual kei career with my band.

Hey! You have a band. Tell me more =) I played in a band once but it didnt work out. The band members didint get along so well.. but I still play electric and acoustic guitar, electric piano and sing. I've tried to figure out how to play Ringo Shiina songs but I'm not so good getting the right notes or chords... =(
Hmm... how was the concert? Still remember. Have any pictures? ;) I assume it was quite different from the concerts that she helds nowdays...
Yeah you must be older, I'm 20 years old and still studying.
Sheena Ringo recently released a dvd called 'electric mole'. Two hours of an astonishing concert, interrupted from time to time by some backstage footage.
The average price for a concert ticket should be somehow between 5000 and 6000 Yen, depending on the location the concert takes places and the popularity of the artist.
While Sheena Ringo ended her tour somehow in september, I suppose you'll have to wait for the release of a new album to see her again on tour. According to how active she was in 2003, this could somehow happen in a not so distant future i guess ?

The concert was f***ing loud! I almost had a seziure from the color schemes she was using with the lights....that and I was so sh*t-faced that basically any odd light blew my mind.
My band is called Kigatsu. We are gearing up to head over to Japan fall of '04. I'm not much older than you, by the way, Wasabi. I'm only 21.

You have seen it I assume =) What songs she plays in that DVD? I have seen some concer which was little odd but still great. I think it was Baishou Ecstasy. Mostly songs from Karuki Zamen Kuri no Hana.
5000-6000 Yen, thats not so bad. Even I could afford it =) Do you know is Ringo Shiina's concerts sold out quickly? How popular is she?
I really hope she would held a concert during my visit to japan next year around summer...
i recently have the craving for jpop musiq and i lyk shiina gingo song a lot i found them so addicting i feel like i can listen to her song 4ever,

Damn, I'm so jealous. I wanna see a Shiina Ringo concert before I die!
I have a band too. No plans to go to Japan, though :-/
Did anyone get the limited edition Electric Mole DVD with book? I got it and it seems that the book is damaged, 40 of the pages have a hole the size of a cd in them!! this isn't right is it?

I know that's not what they call her in Japan. A friend of mine burned an album of hers for me. I really enjoyed it! It's much different from the music I normally listen to (i.e. Toy Dolls, The Misfits, The Ramones, Iggy Pop, Guns N' Roses...just to name a few. I'm big into rock n' roll and old school punk.)
Is your signature not a little too big?

Wel she's a really great artist, I also like her music although I hate pop music, she's very good. :D
P.D. Shouldn't this topic be in the Jpop section??
I'm new. I changed my signature. I tried changing it before, but there was something wrong with the computer. I don't know if this should be in the j-pop section.

You can't possibly compare these two pictures. The first one is completely staged, with all the lighting in the right place.
The second is just an outdoor picture, even without any flash lighting. On top of that the picture is unsaturated and very low in contrast. She could be wearing tons of make-up and it still would turn out this bad.
Photography is really simple. You can make anyone look hot if you apply the right conditions and that also works the other way.
she will be super hot if she gets rid of the mole

Uhm, i think she actually might have done so.
At the time of this release: http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=TOBF-5291
...there was an animation on her website of her face with the mole disappearing. I haven't seen any recent pictures of her though, so i'm not sure if it's really gone.
She's currently in a new band called Tokyo Jihen and there is a picture of the band in the Discography section of their site (http://www.tokyojihen.com/), but it's so small, i can't make out if the mole is still there.
her voice is horrible. end.
I have never heard any of her music, but isn't there a character in Angelic Layer named Shiina Ringo?
edit: never mind I was thinking of Seto Ringo :p

That's cool. Did you hear any music from her new project Tokyo Jihen yet? And if so is it any good?

Sep 12, 2004, 11:18
it's the same band basically as when she did one of her concert dvds, i believe... i've heard a live song by them
Does Tokyo Jihen have Shina Ringo in it?
When I watched one of their films, I thought the vocal in the band looked like and sang like Shiina Ringo, and I was right.
THe way she sings is really,,, say unique, that's one thing about her, which attracts many people.
I like her too, she's cool.
To some who think her music is categorize in Pop, it isn't really Pop, it's rather Rock.
can someone post a good pic of gacket thanks again

Hmmm, well I know FA about Japanese music, I don't know if this is new or 'cool' music, but I've just heard 'Haiiro no Hitomi', personly, it's a great track! I like the melody, the mix of voices, it doesn't sound that 'pop' to me, sounds like a britrock tune that just happens to be in Japanese. Plus, she is fine. Is all their/her music like this? Am I a tuneless fool with no taste?
Discuss.

Tokyo Jihen...I liked it. I t is very similar to Shiina's solo stuff, which i like as well. So I guess if you like her solo stuff, you like the Tokyo Jihen stuff...^-^
I don't think she removed her mole. It was paintbrushed off of the Ringo no Uta CD cover, and stuck on the jewel case instead. Ringo's mole is one of her trademarks, I'd personally hate to see it go.
The new Tokyo Jihen cd is back to old school Shiina Ringo. She made a small departure to more avantgarde on Ringo no Uta and Karuki Seieki Kuri no Hana, as well as her Mayonaka no Junketsu CD-single. Tokyo Jihen turns back to the punk-rock genre she did on Zecchoushuu, Shouso Strip and Muzai Moratorium.

Ringo is one of the best artists to come out of Japan. Why they call her jpop is beyond me because she rocks harder than some visual kei bands :D
She's in the same caliber as similar acclaimed female artists like PJ Harvey, Fiona Apple, Tori Amos, Bjork etc.
some of her earlier stuff is vanilla soft rock, though. I don't like songs like Koko de Kiss Shite, for example.
I agree. She's definately rock. Maybe her lighter music is a bit popish sometimes but generally she's far from your typical pop singer. Some of my favourite songs by her include:
Meisai
Shuukyou
Kohukuron
Honnoh
Gibbs
Stem
there're far too many to mention. She's by favourite female Jrocker.

Yep Shiina Ringo definately rocks. I love her voice, although I know alot of people who don't saying its annoying.
She's awesome! :-) I love her voice, she is like very jazzy sorta, but it's not jazz obviously. You don't hear of her that much it seems anyway, in Japan.

Much like how some people find Evanescence annoying. Most people complain that Shiina Ringo sounds nasal but personally I just see it as her own twist that makes her so different from most female artists.

Shiina Ringo is one of htose artists that can pull off a song like ringo o uta and make it a work of art. I was informed Ringo no Uta is one of her compilation songs. She made it based on her precviously made songs. That's a Maaya-like performance (see Maaya SAkamoto or Mameshiba & Saigo no Mameshiba for a follow-up) that deserves respect and demands attention.
