Given the large number of fans who follow anime here, I'm sure most of you have watched scenes in your favorite shows that made you eyes bulge, your jaw drop and cry out: "Holy s@#$!!!" Well, here's my "Holy s@#$!!!" moment.

In episode six of Fushigi Yugi, Miaka, trapped in a mirror dimension watches in horror as an evil doppelganger uses a mirror to suck the lifeforce away from Tamahome and Hotohori. Realizng the double is a dark reflection of herself, Miaka shatters a plate and rams a pointed shard into her own chest!!! The doppelganger cries out from pain and morphs into one hell of an ugly creature whose *** Tamahome and Hotohori whomp, with Nuriko finishing it off with a boulder she drops on it.

With the creature gone, a seriously wounded Miaka reappears, but is brought back from the brink of death by her friends. I've watched that episode three times now and I literally cringe and clutch at my own chest when I watch that scene. For a show that alternates between martial arts action, romantic melodrama and slapstick humor worthy of The Three Stooges, that remains the most shocking moment I've ever seen in an anime series.

Well, that's my example. How about telling everyone about yours!

Yeah, I wasn't expecting that from an anime geared toward adolescent girls either. After watching that episodes and a few others, I'm convinced that FY won't be coming out on the Cartoon Network anytime soon, and if it does it will be horribly watered down.

As for Oh Crap! moments in anime, my first would have to be in Akira when Testsuo causes the guys in that hospital to explode, covering the walls and ceiling. I wasn't really expecting that.

Also, pretty much the entire series of Lain is full of freaky stuff that you aren't really expecting. I loved it for that, and for the theme song.

Mine would be towards the end of Berserk when Gattsu cuts his arm off. I had a hard time watching that the first time, and I still do. That he did it with a broken sword makes it even worse!

I agree completely. It's hard to believe that FY is a shojo series, given that it has more than it's fair share of bloodshed, violence and death, not to mention instances of attempted rape and suicide. And no, the show won't make it onto Cartoon Network, not even in its Adult Swim programming.

i've got a ton, but i cant remember em all right now. The ones i most remember are in the Cowboy Bebop movie when the dude suddenly pulled out a granade and blew himself up in that train. Also, i remmeber being pretty shocked when i was a kid and Heero blew himself up. "mission accepted" BAM. uhhh oh and in Blue Gender when the dude was like semi-concious and he looks up and see the little girl, then out of knwo where a bug comes buy and eats her or somthin. i was like whoah, didn't see that coming.

oh and pretty much all of La Blue Girl was a bit of a shcoker :D :p

ummm, i would have to say that some of the most shocking scenes in anime for me have come from urotsukidoji. it is horror/hentei, and i dont expect many ppl have seen it. i dont generally watch this kind of stuff, but the first 4 episodes were amazing. the shocker was when Nagumo's friend made a pact with a demon in episode 2, and was forced to do some horrific things, i wont mention what they are, but anyone who has seen it can probably guess.

If manga counts--then when Kaoru "died" towards the end of the Rurouni Kenshin manga.

doesn't Kenshin die too??...and don't they have a son together??..(sorry for spoiling..I didn't know about it someone spoiled it for me...)

one of the most shocking moments for me was in Angel Sanctuary when Sara was killed...its was soo asd after her and Setsuna finally get to be together... and then he has himself killed to get her sould back from Hades...I started crying soo badly :( ...can you believe that is how the anime ends?!?..it was good, but I have to admit I was disappointed...hopefully its not gonna be the same way in the manga...

if manga counts then another shocking moment would have to be in Kare Kano (His and Her Circumstances)...when Soichiro and (omg I forgot her name!!...ahhhhh!! :( )...well... hopefully you guys know who I mean..anyways the schocking part is when they sleep together in the 6th manga...I was beyond shocked..I mean I knew they loved it each other and I'm a understanding of that...I just can't believe they did that soo soon...I mean like what are they 14 and 15!!...another thing that was weird about that is that things seemed normal at the end of that manga, but I'm not sure what happens later on... :( ( I can't believe I forgot her name... :( )

My three top shocking moments are:

1) The entire final scene in the last episode of Cowboy Bebop...and especially when Spike died.
2) When Goku self-destructed himself to try to kill Cell. Sure, Goku had died before, but this was the first time he'd died when I was actually following DBZ.
3) It's from a game, but ah well. In Xenosaga Episode 1 when Albedo pulled off his head while talking to MOMO. That just freaked me out.

That's only in the "Reflections" OVA In the Manga they do have a kid--but it never shows then die...

They also majorly changed the ending in the anime.

***MASSIVE, CANNOT-BE-UNREAD SPOILER AHEAD***

In the manga, when they get back from fighting Shishio the next and last major enemy they face is Enishi--the little brother of Kenshin's first wife. Enishi forms a syndacate, and they all attack Kenshin at the Kamia dojo, and when the dust settles Kenshin finds Kaoru's body with a no-dachi driven through her chest...

...but it later turns out that this was a fake, and that Enishi is holding Kaoru captive on an island.

The problem is that many people stopped reading the manga after Kaoru's supposed death--thinking it was real and not wanting to see what happens next without the possibility of Kenshin and Kaoru finally getting together.

***END OF MASSIVE, CANNOT-BE-UNREAD SPOILERS***

So basically they changed it to prevent a bunch of people from getting all depressed and not watching the last few ep's of the anime. Unfortunatly the substitute plotline they came up with just doesn't have the same "Grand Finale, all accounts are paid" feel to it--so it was a big dissapointment for me after reading the manga and waiting ep after ep for that story arc to begin.

Well, to revisit this thread, I've got a brand new example: the first five minutes from the first episode of Elfen Lied with the murderous Lucy slicing and dicing guards to shreds with her vectors. Arms, legs, heads, torsos, you name it, it was whacked like wheat with a sickle while blood was quite literally everywhere. That was the sickest, most gruesome stuff I've EVER seen in an anime series before!

Is cruel depiction no cut in an overseas edition?

Nearly everything and anything in Furi Kuri: FLCL to me is shocking.

I really have not seen that many anime shows, but the most shocking to me was when Vash killed Legato in Trigun. I kind of expected everyone in Wolf’s Rain to die. However, I was crushed when Spike dies in Cowboy Bebop. I did not want to believe it; even though there was tons of foreshadowing.

Nope, that scene was shown fully intact in the U.S. release. Even though it was animation, that, like almost everything else shocked me. The graphic nature of the violence in Elfen Lied was absolutely astonishing and made scenes like Tetsuo's hospital ramapge in Akira look like kiddie stuff.

Bah. I'll give the Neon genesis death are "shocking." But they are nothing compared to two other items. The first is Grave of fireflies, especially at the end. However most people go into it with full knowledge of what they are about ti see. But nothing, nothing at all comes close to the constant series of deaths of the main characters during the Series Legend of Galactic Heroes. Its heartwrenching to watch characters you have watched grow for 50+ episodes die senselessly in war. Three of the deaths in particular really make you stop and think. (I won't post which ones because they are major spoilers)

I don't know if this qualifies as shocking after having recently seen Elfen Lied, but in the first episode of Gunslinger Girl, you've got this cute little girl named Henrietta who, one minute, is looking painfully shy and quiet, and the next, she's spraying a room full of hoods with bullets from a submachine gun hidden in a violin case with a murderously cold look on her face. All I could say after watching that was "Whoa!" If you've never heard of Gunslinger Girl, the best way to describe it as Romper Room meets La Femme Nikita. It's certainly a new and, I might add, disturbing take on the ages old girls and guns genre.

I was partly shocked by the sudden killing off of Akemi in Saikano. She seemed such a strong character and then for her to die in Shujis arms kinda came as a blow.
@ Flashjeff: Henriettas berserker rage is awesome. Such a quiet girl at the beginning. What is more shocking is the reactions of Guisse to her rampage. No recriminations to the fact she has just murdered those men, but more of why did you go berserk? Mind you the seies is full of shocks. How about the death of Elsa and her handler?

EP13-EP14 is an episode of a killer of a twin child of Romania.

Just about everything in Saikano was shocking, from the deaths of characters like Akemi to Chise's "Dark Phoenix" moments throughout the series where she soars in and blows up everything. As for Henrietta, she was rather fond (and overprotective) of her handler Jose, whenever she perceived him as being threatened, it's "Moe, Larry! The cheese!" time! Gunslinger Girl was certainly startling, even to a veteran anime fan like me!

waru mina, but the my moment of shock is from little Naruto, or more precisely Sakura: at the begining of the chunin exam, she's feeling real bad for not being able to fight along with sauke and naruto. So in a harsch battle against some treacherous sound ninjas, as her bodies are down, she unleashes herself (first cutting gher hair half short) and bites on the arm of the ennemy. And she hangs on with all she's got while the bad guy is punching her head like crazy to escape... Surprising Sakura, really.

Then my "oh crap" moment would definitely be from my favorite anime: Nadia and the secret of blue water (Fushigi umi no Nadia) at the very last episod when everyone character you really care about is being torn in pieces... so outrageous :-( but i guess it's just the japanese way...

so long pals!
