View Full Version : Furigana Manga?
Can anyone tell me where I can get me some manga with Furigana (Ruby text, I think)?
Where's a good source in general to get current Japanese manga here in the states? Any good websites??
:?
Thanks!
Sasuga Books (sasugabooks.com) has manga for sale, but I don't see any information about furigana. I would guess that anything written for children would have furigana, and probably teen material as well. I know that the Ranma 1/2 manga has them.
i my self have never heard of such an anime or manga
It's not the name of a manga. Furigana is hiragana that is used with kanji to show pronunciations, so you won't find any anime of this type (except for episode titles and such). All he wants is manga with furigana, so that he can more easily look up words that he doesn't know, learn readings for words that he only knows kanji for, or learn kanji for words that he already knows the reading for.
Exactly... it's a learning thing. From what I've been told and seen (in pictures) many signs in Japan also use Furigana to help people with readings of Kanji. I guess that's aimed towards kids and gaijin... not so sure...
I'd say it's aimed more at kids. They have romaji for the gaijin. :p

Furigana are a crutch.
Well, yeah, but you have to start somewhere. I don't have much of any vocabulary beyond Pimsleur and Japanese for Busy People yet. At this point, anything helps.
For that matter, dictionaries are a crutch and so are encyclopedias.

And if you had started out by mentioning dictionaries, I would have said "Dictionaries are a crutch".
You're right, though, anything helps. (That's what crutches do too; they help).
The trick with crutches is to lean on them as lightly as possible, so as to avoid forming a psychological dependence on them.

I was gonna say something mean about metaphores, but comparing it to a crutch is really good... seems basically every rule applying to a crutch can be carried over to a dictionary or furigana manga..
it's a great help to lean on when you're feeling weak
lean on it, but don't rely on it
don't hit people with it, they get annoyed

pretty much anything published by jump comics, shounen comics, or tentoumushi comics have every kanji with furiganana next to them, as these manga are aimed at young people. e.g. ranma 1/2 mentioned by glenn is published by shounen.
some ones i own which you might like to look into are:
one piece
doraemon
inu yasha
meitantei konan (detective conan)
i'm sure naruto would be awesome as well but i haven't read it.
Doraemon would probably be good. All the japanese kids say that's their favorite. Just as well get a bit culturally literated. :D
Now, where would I get such a thing? :?

How about Amazon Japan? Have you taken a look?

I would suggest Dragon Ball; I believe everyone should read that. Just for the main fact that the antics of young Goku and his friends are oh so whimsical....ok, there are boobies in 巻一其之九 (kan'ichi sonokyuu), which is Vol. 1 Ch. 9, I believe.
Well, I found Dragon Ball on the Japanese Amazon, but I can't figure out how to order anything. I probably need to create an account there, but I can't read enough Japanese yet to do that. I'll fiddle with it some more later.
fantt good luck with the japanese learning i am trying to learn it myself i know 1-29 kanjji cards.not a lot though
See if you can get "Remembering the Kanji Vol 1" by Heisig. It's a great book for remembering what the Kanji are. Better than trying to cram all of it into your head by rote memorization. A good library might have a copy.
i will have to get that one i am trying to rember all the cards myself
