View Full Version : A little authentication? Please?

Alright, here's the deal. I drew this picture a week ago for my webcomic. It's a picture of one of my characters, Ame Hiroken, leaving his familie's small shrine in the forest before heading on his quest to avenge his family and village.
Now, my knowledge of Samurai in terms of clothes, topknots, building structure, swords, and atmosphere amount to my Rorouni Kenshin DVD's and Stills from The Last Samurai.
Can anyone who knows about this sort of thing give the picture a look-over please? I need all the help I can get! :? :clueless:

Thanks in advance,

Don't be discouraged when people don't post, most are vapid asses. I like the character and I look forward to your comic. Please post it on the forums when you get a chance! :-)

it looks good, but in the title "the legend of ronin", the japanese behind it should be 浪人の伝説 (ronin no densetsu) and not just 浪人伝説

Thor: Yay! ^_^ Glad you like him. If you want to see the comic so far, it's at this link: The Legend of Ronin (http://www.drunkduck.com/The_Legend_of_Ronin/)
Okaeri Man: Hmmm...I kept thinking about it like that, but I sort of copied Squaresoft's "Seiken Densetsu" title (Legend of Mana). I didn't see a 'no' particle in that title so I thought it might not be done like that. There's also the question that pops up with that, if the posessive particle is put in there, then is Ronin posessive of the Legend? or is the Legend posessive of Ronin? The truth is I sort of wanted it to be a double meaning like that. Oy what a headache, I'll have to consult with Conor about this. -_-

ok if it's been done before you can leave out the no then. if you put it in, then ronin is posessive of the legend, ie ronin's legend.

*strokes beard*
does the authentication really matter tho?..
all the names are fantasy'ish, so it's all got a very non-japanese more fantasy feel to it anyway... *inspired* by feudal japan

Twisted Mac: That's true, there's something of a irish/european medieval AND a feudal japan aspect to the comic. As if they were both separate worlds with relatively easy travel between them. The Authentication matters to me, mostly because I want to do it justice, not just conform to the pop culture version.

Lose the cape looking thing, it shouldn't be flapping out that far ;)
Otherwise a nice pic. Do you know about the hakama (pants)? It looks a bit like a skirt/dress but it does have 2 legs, something you can remember if you ever draw him with the legs fair length apart.

Good point jeisan. I thought it looked like a cape too, but now I realize that he has pulled his arm out of his sleeve.
@Roninh, how old is he supposed to be? I do agree that there should be a little seperation so that you realize he is wearing a hakama. Very good drawing though. I am going to check out your other link now.

Ewok: Yeah...that's a sleeve. ^_^ Everyone keeps telling me about Hakumas when I show them this pic, I know nothing about Hakumas, but yeah, that's a long skirt he's wearing.
Jeisan: Thanks for the clarification and praise! :3 Much appreciated!
CC1: Again, don't know a thing about Hakumas, but turning it into one shouldn't take too much effort, since it looks like a skirt anyway. Hiroken is supposed to be 16 years old at the time this 'picture' was taken.
Byp: Rawk! Linkage! ^_^ :gives you a Ronin plushie:

I disagree. Apart from anything else 浪人伝説 is used in 8 web pages and 浪人の伝説 in zero.
Basically 伝説 is quite often used as a suffix, for example
Legend of Ruins ~廃墟伝説~
Incidently questions about the language go best in the Learning Japanese (http://www.jref.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=64) forum.
PaulTB: "Incidently questions about the language go best in the Learning Japanese forum." True, but I wanted a rather general criticism...I guess....

No problem ... but posts outside the Learning Japanese forum involving language questions have a greater tendency to get wrong answers :relief:

Pretty nice image. :) I recommend consulting some basic books on Japanese clothing, samurai arms and armor, and such, though, which any library should have. For one thing, his top is lapped the wrong direction. Kimono are only worn that way on corpses. Good luck! (Great job on the colors.)

that's symbolic.. cuz he's dead in the eyes of..ummm.. of... yeah, I've got nothing...
CRAPPERS! I got the flaps wrong AGAIN! >_<
*dies*
I tried my local library, they don't have jack crap. Maybe an out of town library...hmmm...
Well, I've got a whole chapter and a small sidequest to go through until this sort of thing matters so...yeah.
I'm appreciating the info...a LOT! ^_^ Thanks everyone!
WOW, nicely done, nicely done, I really like the cool monochromatic style on the characters clothes, and the sakura leafs, sweet touch.
However, i do feel your character resembles kenshin a bit more than needed, the small short body, long hair. :?
I'm not a jinja(shrine of Shinto) expert, so take my words as such.
1. height of trees
You set the shrine in the forest, so the trees around there will be much taller.

Sliding doors would be common for small shrines.

Duo: well, suffice it to say, any young long haired japanese swordsman is going to look like kenshin to SOME degree. Personally, I don't think it looks ANYTHING like kenshin. Then again, it might just be the ponytail hair style that's throwing you that direction.
Regardless, I don't think I'll get anything more than snide remarks about it. -_-
Kara: Holy smokes lookit the linkage! You so totally rock!
1 - Yeah, now that I look at it, I did make the trees in the background WAY too short. I was thinking of making a few trees rise up from behind the shrine, but, it didn't really happen.
2 - Correct again. I'll have to do some more study. ^_^
I wuv you!

:D As an occasional artist myself, let me just say: you've got the best attitude toward constructive criticism EVER.
wow I just have to say, that's such an awsome picture, be sure to message me if you ever do more! It's so amazing
Wintersweet: After about 3 or so run-downs by some rather hard nosed art directors, you tend to learn how to take it like a champ. ^_^
