View Full Version : japanese standard font
Hi, I'm trying to develop a flash file with some Japanese characters.
My problem is that I don't know what kind of font to use as standard (like Arial etc.)
De characters must be very tight (kerning) and it must be a standard font that everyone has on their systems in japan.
best regards

thought there was japan people here ? :okashii:
well, I guess that MS Gothic is the best I can use, it looks quite right.
there are japanese people here but think about the time in japan when you posted the question and then your remark since no one answered your question in a whole 3 hours  the times were 11:27pm and 2:16am. give people some time to answer before getting your panties in a bunch.
in my opinion the easiest way would be to make the kanji pictures rather than text that why you dont have to worry about who has what font.

I don't know. But if you're making some kind of kana flash card, all you need is just to have the font set included with the flash (and of course an easy to read font at that, too). That way, you don't have to worry about whether the user (both using Japanese and non-Japanese OS) has Japanese fonts or not.
As for a kanji font set, I'm not sure about that one.

People in japan use the same system as the Japanese IME that microsoft gives out. I have been to chat.msn.co.jp. and many people there use basic font in the microsoft ime format. So i hope that helps you a bit more than these other dudes. You're creating something with macromedia flash? Could I perhaps take a look at it?
.....or perhaps... you mean what english font systems do they have on their computers in japan?
I assume since it is macromedia, a person would be able to see arial or times new roman.. -memory blank-.. they should have some of these. if i remember correctly i've seen japanese shockwave flash material without having installed any japanese fonts into my computer. i'm sure they should be able to see english text if you put it on in an swf file.

Try using MS Word with the Japanese language kit MS provides with Windows XP, that is if you're running Windows XP.
Hi all, thanks for all the great response (and I was in a bit hurry first ;))
Yes, it's correct that I'm creating a Macromeda Flash site and that's why I'm wondering about the fonts on Japanese systems.
My main problem is that the flash files schould be able to show both japan/english characters but "standard font" that schould be on the site doesn't include Japanese fonts so I need something to replace it with.
To get people to be able to see non-standard fonts I can include Kana as Keiichi says.
My solution is to have two textfields in the flash file with included/embedded font library to get the result that I want.
Then for the body text I use MS Gothic (not embedded) becouse the japanese characters must be very tight to be displayed correctly.
