音に酔

I know the literal is 'drunk on sound', but that really doesn't fit well with the context, so I was thinking this could be a phrase I'm simply not familiar with. It's later used in the same context as someone laughing off a headcold ("Chotto oto ni suitta dakenanoni Mine ga oogesa ni sawagukara... mou daijoubu dayo").

Oh oh, hey, I'm Snoopy... uuuh... I've never actually been here before, but I ran across this place when I was trying to figure this phrase out (weird how google turns up random things that don't really pertain to the search terms, but whatever works). And if anyone's interested I run a manga translation site. :evil:

So _what_ was the context?

Well that could well be in the general 'intoxicated on sound' region. Except of course that 酔った is _not_ read すいった but よった.

It seems to have two meanings: to get lost in (or intoxicated by) the music, or in a sound with "poetic" associations (like cicadas); and to be made nauseous by some kind of sound, like the sound of waves. Probably the first is more common. Maybe the speaker was listening so intently to the music that his friend thought there was something wrong with him, or something. It depends on the context, as Paul says.

"でもついつい聴いちゃいます。音に酔っちゃうんですよ。爆音で聴くと本当に気持ち良くって。"

"ほら、海って波の音がするじゃないですか。私その波の音に酔っちゃうんですよ。あのザザーッて波の音がダメ ですね。酔ってゲロ吐きそうになっちゃいますね。"

I'm sorry, I'm not all that good at kanji. >_>; But what knowledge I have serves my general purpose... I don't really read anything out loud or communicate with anyone in any way ^^;

Context, context... I'd upload the pages but the scene's kind of spread out... well, I'll just upload the pages anyway. It's from the manga Nodame Cantabile. Chiaki's conducting a group that was terrible and has finally gotten themselves together, and that's where the scans start.

Thanks for the help ^^

It seems to be "酔う" in the second sense:

〔船などに〕feel sick
船(車,飛行機)に酔う get 「seasick (carsick / airsick)
彼は船に酔いやすい(酔わない) He is a 「poor (good) sailor.

The fact that little by little everyone is getting further off the tempo seems to be what makes him nauseous. He's also complaining that no-one is watching him, but I don't see why that would make him feel sick.

Here's the second example sentence above:
"ほら、海って波の音がするじゃないですか。私その波の音に酔っちゃうんですよ。あのザザーッて波の音がダメ ですね。酔ってゲロ吐きそうになっちゃいますね。"
"You know, [when you are near] the sea, the waves make a sound, right? The sound of the waves makes me [sea] sick! I really can't handle that rushing sound of the waves. It makes me nauseous, and I feel like I'm going to really throw up, you know?"
