excuse my stupidity, but how do you pronounce L'Arc~en~Ciel + Dir en grey, what languages are they, and since when did these kooky non-english/non-japanese languages become popular?!?

L'Arc~En~Ciel is french and means something like "gate in the sky/heaven", I think. :? The pronunciation is a bit difficult to explain. Perhaps ラールクッ~ウン~シエルッ. The ラ is pronounced as "la" and the し more like "zee". Just ask someone who speaks french.

Dir en grey looks like french but since I don't speak french, I can't say for sure.

:note: Dir en Grey is japanese for "Silver Coin" and is pronounced Dir en Grey, like it says. I'm not sure about what it means, and if its Japanese, so correct me if I'm wrong.

'L'arc en ciel' is french for 'arc in the sky', or rainbow, I guess. I thought 'Dir en Grey' was german.

"Dir en grey" is a bastardization of German.

I suppose "Dir" could come from the German "der", meaning "the" or "that".
"en" means "and" in Dutch but also "to(wards)" in French. "Grey" is just the name of the color (in English (insert "duh" here)).

These kind of odd names probably started in the early 1990's, when a lot of the visual rockbands from that time tried to associate themselves with the European goth/rock scene. You also had Malice Mizer, Lareine, Illumina, Baiser and Lastier for instance. Lastier sounds like a French word, but it actually means "Last tear".

Well... Lareine, Baiser, Illumina and MM actually had meaning (MM was a made-up meaning, perhaps, but still...) Baiser and Lareine were definitely valid names ;)

Actually, those types of names were popular circa 96-01.

Lately, a lot of bands have been popping up with more 'alternative'-ish names.

The fads come and go, but one thing remains consistent; non-sensical.

L'Arc~en~Ciel indeed means "the arc in the sky", otherwise known as a rainbow. I have no idea what Dir en grey means, since "Dir" is german for "You" and "en" is french for "in". You in grey? Hhmm...

Yeh thats about right...Bands become inventive in the naming process...L'Arc~en~Ciel is french for rainbow and it came about because Tetsu (if im correct...) is part French ( I was told his mother is french...). Dir en Grey was Kaoru's invention andwell that is just Kaoru...^^; :cute: Psycho le Cemu is a good exampe of bands being inventive with their names. Their explaination for it was this: They thought Psycho le sounded cool and then madeup the Cemu part from old band names...Talk about inventive... I think its cool that they like to think outside the box...

Dir en Grey is not German at all. "Dir" exists in German language but I can't imagine they mean the German word "dir". I first thought it's french, haha.
But could be English for real...

It shall mean something like Silver Coin... although, when you try to translate it, it doesn't really make a sense at all. Guess it's more like...
well, invented just because it sounds well or something :?

L'arc~en~Ciel does mean rainbow, though I've read in a lot of websites and a lot of biographies Tetsu named it that way because he saw a French movie called that soon before he formed it and he liked it very much, not because he is part French or anything :o :? In matter on fact, I think I read an interview once, where he said it was because of that andt he person who was making the interview said something like "just for that?" and he say "yes, just for that..." :p :p ... but well, you may be right...
Now, Dir en Grey, I just know that, that they say in an interview it means something like "coin in grey" or "grey silver coin", something like that...

Except naming your visual band something in French or German isn't really original anymore. Even if it's still nonsensical.

And anyone can take a look at Tetsu and see he's full Japanese.

Um, okay, but I only said it was ONE of the members andI seemed to remember it being Tetsu...plus, I only said part and french is not that easy to distingush!! I know I will never be able to just look at someone and instantly say "yep they must be French! Its soooo obvious!!" (well, unles they are in France or speaking a whole lot of French...) also, it IS still original to do such things like making up words or combining languages!! I must disagree with you on that!!

hi..I'm a new one here so..nice to meet you all!!
and about Dir en Grey . the meaning of that is "Grey Coin / silver coin". but..I don't know why they put that name for the band (is there historical meaning maybe??)
and L'Arc En Ciel is "Ark In The Sky" or we always calle it "rainbow". tetsu is the one who created that name. it is because he saw a french movie with the same tittle, and he loved that tittle.
but you can see it. that name is really show four different characters in L'arc En Ciel's member, right??

Wanna know something funny? When I first heard of L'Arc, I called Hyde "he-day", and couldn't stop saying it that way for the longest time XD

i thought Hyde was pronounced "hai-do" as i've read on a website. and i have no clue how to pronounce hide, i've always calle him just "hide".

anyways, from what i've read and learned from french class, L'arc~en~Ciel means "the arc in sky" and it means rainbow (and it's also translated "rainbow" in chinese). Dir en Grey means Coin-in-grey. "Dir" is German for coin, "en" means "in" from french, and "grey" is just english.

hide I've been told is pronounced like high-day (hai-deh whichever), while hyde is actually pronounced like "hai-doh" or at least by his Japanese fans, since they apparently have difficulty saying that.

That's what I've heard.

My japanese friend Marie has only been in the US for three years, and L'Arc~en~Ciel has been her favorite band for a loooong time. She pronounces Hyde as just plain old "hide". Go figure.

ya it seems that Dir=you, but there's an awfully lot of people who says Dir en Grey= (Sliver)Coin in grey, or grey (silver)coin. doesn't make much sense. Same with mana's store, "Moi meme Moitie"(me same half) :clueless:

I know that this thread is mad old, but i quote from wikipedia
"According to guitarist Kaoru, the name "Dir en grey" was chosen because it "sounded right," and is composed of words from several languages, so that people would not be able to attach a specific meaning to it other than the band's name itself."
