I have watched on the TV about the Japanese bentou! All the bentou boxes have unique and cute designs! My question is: Do Japanese keep the boxes after they finished the food?? Or do you ever keep the boxes?
I think that if i'm living in Japan, I'll be having lots of bentou and keep all the special boxes. So what do you think??

you can buy bento boxes over at www.jlist.com...
they're pretty good quality, not to be disposed after one use though.. don't quite know what sort of bento you've seen that looked disposable though :o

Lots of bento comes in a disposable plastic container that you throw out after use. At Don Don, that's all they serve.

Depends, bentou is a rather vaugue term. Most packed lunches you buy at convience stores, stations, shops, etc are just on a plastic or compressed foam base. Eat and dispose.
Otherwise you can get nice moulded plastic or lacured boxes. Keepers ;)

At some train stations you can get bentou in cool bamboo (and other) boxes with unusual shapes, decorations, etc. We brought one back from Japan but it was a challenge to keep it from getting crushed! I'm glad we got it, though, because I've read that these are dying out (they used to be even more elaborate in the past).

I think the Japanese have a lot of good ideas about HOW to eat food, ideas that I wish would come to America, but they're ideas that are difficult to apply to other cultures. For example, kaiten-zushi (conveyor belt sushi restaurants). I wish there was a way to serve Western food in the same way, but I don't think anyone would want to buy small plates of hamburger and pizza pieces or a tray of four french fries. Also, not sure how you could make America-style bento boxes. Aaa, I'd rather eat the Japanese ones anyways, I just can't get them here. I should open my own American bento/kaiten-hamburger restaurant.

Not at all.
Tupperware-style containers are sometimes used for bento. I've been using them for years for that.
