Ahhhh does anyone remember the old days when you would go into a arcade and meet games like Double Dragon and Bad Dudes and Karnov and many other side scrolling beatem ups? What a glorious era. What was your favorite beat em up game? Common titles seem to be
Double Dragon
Final Fight
Streets of Rage
What about Kung Fu, wasn't that the first of those games? Also, I'm not sure this is really part of the genre, but remember the first Street Fighter, the one with those really huge pads for punching and kicking?
Some of my other faves were:
Ninja Gaiden (arcade)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - the first 4-player game I can remember. With 3 friends and a handful of quarters, that was a riot.
Also, I can't remember the name, but there was another 80's fighting game where the enemy characters didn't have names, they were simply identified by their weapons, like Pole and Chain...? I think it was made by Konami.

Streets Of Rage was an awesome game, with an awesome theme song. One of my favorites in this genre. The best, though, would have to be the old X-Men arcade game that could have up to like six players. I remember being about ten years old, and joining a game with a bunch of high school strangers, and beating it with them. I've never gone to the arcade regularly, so that's a really fond memory for me.
Yeah, the X-men one kicked a--wait, can I say that here? :D
That's what's so great about the new X-Men game--it plays just like the old beat-em up except that your characters level up and get new abilities...
...and that just about everything in the stages is destructable. They have a "destruction" stat tied to each character's attacks to detemine what kinds of things you can break--so while Cyclops can't even dent a car with his punches, Wolverine's claw attacks can destroy a garbage truck--and some of these level are about 90% destructable. I was playing this with my freinds last weekend, and we literally spent hours on the second mission destroying everything from the computer consoles to generators to stripping the metal plating off the f#^*ing walls!
There's just something so wondefully wrong about seeing the heroic X-Men rioting in the streets and causing massive property destruction--especially the uptight ones like Beast and Cyclops. Having Wolverine and Cyclops team up and rampage across town destroying cars, fences, lampposts, parking meters, park benches, chucking patio chairs through glass windows--all in the first level--that was definitely the highlight of the game so far...

The new X-Men game does look really awesome. Are the cut scenes as good as the scenes in the commercial? Cuz just the commercial is amazing.
Somewhere thereabouts, yeah. It's pretty f#^*in' sweet.
