Is this a kana writing test ? :) Then, yeah, ji is じ。 Did you imput it in using the two English language characters ?

Yes, that's it. It's pronounced just like English "j". For other Japanese sounds, combinations are used:

じ -> ji, but:
じゃ -> ja
じゅ -> ju
じょ -> jo

You'll quickly run into confusion if when you first start Japanese, especially if you try to write Japanese IN English characters (romaji) without studying Hiragana very well at first.

It could be Ji, it could be zi. Or it could be tsu, or tu. Maybe shyu or shu? Romaji is written differently at times. Remember, Hiragana is for sounds only. The hiragana is pronounced one way, Romaji only tries to imitate (not match exactly) the sound in English characters.

Which じ are you referring to?
痔? :p

That is normally rendered in hiragana as ぢ, and you can commonly see it written as such on signs outside drugstores in Japan.

The hiragana for 痔 (じ) can also be written as ぢ, but not in a combination like 痔疾 (じしつ) or 痔核 (じかく).

Didn't want to confuse hiragana readers, I just couldn't resist to use the occasion for a dajare. :rolleyes:
