awright, So I just watched Suicide club.
3:00am, room all dark all alone. Hoping for some good frights...
Man was I dissapointed! and the first half hour was so good too!
It had mass-suicides, highschool girls in sexy uniforms including loose socks and all manner of crazy stuff.
It was shrouded in mystique! and that security guard insisted on not turning on the lights in the hospital or whatever that was, that was really made for a scare. (is it just me or was that an unusually calm hospital? I've never seen a Hospital that turns off all the lights.. You've got people going to and forth at all hours... just less so in the night).
Then it just went downhill as you were told what it was all about.. and then you've got all these prissy kids acting funny and they say uncrompehensible stuff that's so obviously uncomprihensible just for the sake of being it!
And you've got that weird gang calling themselves the suicide club... apparently they had no real super powers, they were just crazy.. but still they could for some reason just pop up behind them? that's just silly.
And the end! let's not speak of the actual ending... everyone lives happy ever after? I don't buy it and I don't like it.
So anyway.. they should've just used the first 30 minutes and made someone cool go with it from there and write something scary.

Not the best film from Japan I agree, but there were some disgusting scenes e.g. "chop chop" in the kitchen..... :relief:

I loved this movie. Check out Audition as well, fantastic. Another movie from the director from Audition is The Happiness of the Kataruis, It's a musical with a horror theme, pretty funny.
(edit: had to fix the name of the movie)

I just can't get into this movie, it is the Japanese equivalent to House of the Dead for me.

well, it figures you would like audition too :p
Ichi the killer is another one of Miike's creations (the guy that made audition and all that), and I actually like Ichi...
audition just made me sick... And I couldn't do anything but laugh when she was cutting of that mans limbs and going "kirikirikiri" or something like that all the time...
but yeah, the scene in suicide club where that woman chops off her fingers was pretty...ummm.. emotional or something... the hand wasn't half-bad as far as fake hands go, and it really left me cringing.

Please do not ever compare american cinema, which happens to be the most over contrived, tripe bullshit ever, to japanese cinema...which is colorful and awesome for the most part :D

And you never watch an American made film? Never? You just watch Japanese films only? Oh, how I doubt that.
While we're at it, would you care to discuss Canadian cinematic masterpieces with me?

Sturm, drang, hellfire and bollocks. A lot of japanese movies are over contrived, tripe bullshit just like American movies.
You jsut selectively see what ya wanna.
I watched Suicide Club a long time ago and I thought it was awesome...some parts did freak me out, but I thought it was cool...the whole thing with the lttle kids freaked me out and I was literally twitching in some parts, but overall I thought it was good..very sad though and sorta confussing...

Yeah, I liked Ichi too. Very funny too with some of the scenes, but disturbing character I must say...
Audition I have watched, and I didn't like the last part of the movie either...Just saying "kirikirikiri" gives me the creeps!!
There is another Audition-type film in Korean, called "The Isle" and it has scenes which is just as creepy, although the creepy scenes don't last as long as the creepy scene in Audition.
I of course don't want to hand out spoilers if you don't want to, but the keywords for the creepy, disgusting, "Audition-type" scenes in the Korean flick The Isle is:
a bundle of fish-hooks, genital areas..... :okashii: It really creeped me out!
Has anyone heard about this film??

Haha, sounds like a fishing trip gone wrong I was on one time!
@Jackinthebox
I can't remember, I found it on some ng somewhere. I really liked it and grabbed it. I am sure someday, someone will realise I am using it and take it away from that site.
Until then, enjoy the sway.

I agree with Ant! And what are Canada's contributions to popular cinema? Jim Carrey? Michael J. Fox? William Shatner? UGH! I rest my case!
:D :D :D :D

I hope you haven't tried this particular thing with fishhooks!
For people who like Takashi Miike's films, you should try and watch the Korean The Isle, however, although it is highly acclaimed - I DIDN'T LIKE the torture scenes - especially not self-mutilation with the fishhooks, and the cruelty to the fish. :worried:
I really found it difficult to watch till the end, and when I come to think of it, it is the only film in which I have seen people making a turd very vividly....

Suicide Circle isn't supposed to be a scary movie. It's just another one of those flicks about the alienated youth in modern Japan, left between generations, like Kairo, Lily Chou-Chou and so many others. Watch it for what it is.

still doesn't matter.
major spoiler warning, do not read below this point if you're gonna see the movie
the plot was silly. annoying 13 year-olds making sublime messages that made all sorts of people kill themselves. Noone that figured out the messages reported it, every single one of them killed themselves. (Or in the case of the last girls, joined the cult without the suicide) and had all these philosophical 8 year olds pulling the strings.
on top of that you've got teleporting maniacs popping up behind people.
as a movie about an alienated youth it has even less bearing than it did as a scary movie.
note though that I still thought the first 30 minutes of the flick were pure genious... It was fantastic up until stuff started to get explained and everything just turned out either stupid or completely illogical. I like it when logic is set aside to some point. When you're not supposed to try to explain it. But only when it's done well.
In SC it was just silly.
I'd say that it is another social critique movie that japan has become so used to sending out lately...
while the film asked a lot of round about questions, it was very hard to find any referall to a solution on this topics. I think sono didn't really flow the film all the well together, you didn't feel anything for any of the characters and connected with none of them. Maybe because sono is used to directing porn where character development is not required. I wanted to know more about Kuroda and his family, his sidekick and his interest in the girl or the girls situation with her dead boyfriend. It was a confusing movie, and left so much up in the air that i didn't know what to think. Was the girl going to kill herself? what was the deal with the chicks, children and exucationer dresesd guy in the shipping crate? why were the girls naked? Why did 200 girls jump of Osaka Castle all of the sudden? Who were the young children?
I was expecting some super natural force, something that would explain the two nurses reappearing, the white bag, the shipping crate, the freaky children and the skin bundles.
I expected some answers and got none by the end of the film. But i pay respect to sonos ability to stay on his initial issues. Pop Culture, Japanase Youth, Self Respect, Death and Social problems were all covered in this movie but not explained.
Not a great film, purely because of directing, it could of been a cult hit such as battle royale or audition. Sadely it was not
and i signed up just to say that... lol peace

LOL! good first post.
Do stick around though.
I'd like to add another questionmark to your thesis here though (because it basically covered everything else in the movie).
The officer that blows his head off after his son has killed himself.. his daughter comes walking behind him covered in blood before he does it. But it's never really apparent if she killed herself or not... It might aswell have been the sons blood. She doesn't exactly look hurt.
And after walking behind him she just dissapears.

Good point... the death of kuroda's family was totally unfathomable... why?? WHY DID THE SON, DAUGHTER AND MOTHER KILL THEMSELVES????
we have reasoning behind a lot of the other suicides... but the death of kuroda's family was a completly UNNESSASARY plot point... sono could have done so much more with the film if kuroda's family had stayed alive!
On the point of more questions. What happanded to the bat after the capture of the musician? im still completly lost as to waht happanded to the girl after she got on the train at the end...
damn it, this film sucks! LOL

And this is what I've been saying. This film truly does suck. Intentional or not, to waste Ishibashi Ryo's talent like that is a travesty.

I agree with you guys. The movie got really confusing toward the end. I tried to relate what those kids were saying in the theater with mass suicide, there have to be some kind of unclear message which I never figured out...
"Double Vision" (Chinese) was well-made, I thought. If anybody interested seeing it.

I have the film on dvd, and yes, I like it too! The Taiwanese film is certainly scary, and I really liked David Morse having the leading role.... :-)
The plot was very good! *thumbs up*

I loved double vision. I remember suggesting it to one of my customers whom ad moved to the US from China, and he had already seen the film and said that it represented the different visions of what the afterlife and hell mean to the Chinese.
I also enjoyed that David Morse was the lead. I feel he is a superb actor whom has been overlooked for so long.
Miss Apollo, you may enjoy the Russell Crowe film, 'Proof of Life' as Morse had a large part in that one too.

Don't David Morse and Russell Crow look alike?
I thoght David Morse was seriousely drunk in "Double Vision" when he went to the other detective's house for dinner.

I haven't seen Proof of Life, maybe I should look into it... Russel Crowe I have only seen in Gladiator.
Yes, I was very surprised to find out that Double Vision was great....When I got hold of the dvd, I didn't expect much, as it didn't cost much-so after a month I got round to watch it and was quite surprised!!! The film was great, the plot was interesting too, and some of the scenes funny...E.g. the scene when David Morse needs to have his English translated at the Police HQ in Taiwan, and the Taiwanese policemen make fun of him.... :balloon:
