View Full Version : CHUSHINGURA & AKOROSHI
I need to know the meaning of the word "Chushingura" (忠臣蔵), the story of the loyal 47 ronin. Does it mean "loyalty"?
And "Akoroshi" (or Akorosi, or Ako Roshi) (赤穂浪士). Does it mean "Ronin of Ako"?
If that's right, "Roshi" is "Ronin"? :okashii:
:?

According to the daijirin (http://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/search.php?MT=%C3%E9%BF%C3%C2%A2&kind=&mode=0&jn.x=36&jn.y=13) it's a general name given to ballad dramas, kabuki, or historical accounts whose theme is the revenge of the 赤穂浪士.

That's right. It means the 47 loyal rounin, and roushi is a synonym. Here is what the daijirin has for 赤穂浪士 (http://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/search.php?MT=%C0%D6%CA%E6%CF%B2%BB%CE&kind=jn&mode=0&jn.x=22&jn.y=11).
thanks a lot, Glenn!!!! :thankyou:
