In the November issue of Newtype-USA, the results of a poll of the top 25 all-time anime titles, as voted on by readers was published. Here's the list:

1) Neon Genesis Evangelion
2) Cowboy Bebop
3) Inu-Yasha
4) Rurouni Kenshin
5) Trigun
6) Fruits Basket
7) Robotech
8) Ranma 1/2
9) Love Hina
10) Sailor Moon
11) Hellsing
12) FLCL
13) Fushigi Yugi
14) Chobits
15) Akira
16) Tenchi Muyo!
17) Azumanga Daioh
18) Initial D
19) Dragonball Z
20) Vision of Escaflowne
21) Full Metal Panic
22) Gundam Seed
23) Wolf's Rain
24) Cardcaptor Sakura
25) Excel Saga

A very eclectic list to say the least, representing just about every imaginable genre in anime, everything from giant robots, sci-fi, horror, samurai, shojo, girl power, humor, fantasy and more.

As for my opinions on the list, Evengelion deserves to be at the top, no problem with that, I was surprised that Akira didn't make the top five, given it's one of the most influential titles in the history of anime, or that Sailor Moon didn't rank high since it put girl power on the map. Titles like Love Hina, Hellsing, Chobits and FMP were pleasant surprises, as for DBZ which I've never liked, well, every litter has to have it's runt.

Now, every list is subjective, depending on the viewpoints of the person who reads it. You might look at this and say it's crap or agree 100 percent. You might also think my opinions were garbage as well. So, why don't you chime in with YOU think. Should make for some fun discussion!

HEH! I couldn't help notice that Dragonball Z is number 19! In this forum it seems to be the most hated / least liked anime...:D :D

This must be a clear indication that JRef members did not participate in the Newtype-USA poll. :D

I can't really agree or disgree with this poll, as I have only seen (and liked)the Ghibli animes, some of Satoshi Kon's works, Doraemon, Ijiwaru Baasan, Arare-chan, and some few others....and these are not mentioned.

I think any Miyazaki film should be at the top or Astro boy.
I'm glad Akira is on there.

Pretty damn right, and for a good reason too :D
Seems there were a lot of kiddes replying who like that tripe...

no tsukihime :(
I'd say it's still too new to enter the Alltime best.

I'd also say Evangelion deserves to be at the top, but I'd expected a better place for Sailor Moon...
It surprises me to see Cowboy Bebop on place 2 - I wasn't exactly thrilled by that series...
Nice to see titles like Love Hina, Chobits and Excel Saga in there, although I'd also expected a better place for the latter.

I was surprised that old school classics like Astro Boy, Speed Racer or Star Blazers didn't make the list. And yeah, what's an anime top 25 list without Miyazaki stuff like Spirited Away or Nausicaa? I was also suprised that Revolutionary Girl Utena, THE most stylish and bishomen loaded anime series I've ever seen didn't make the cut.

I'm glad to see that CCS, Azumanga Daioh, Tenchi Muyo, Chobits, Fushigi Yugi, Sailor Moon, Love Hina, Ranma 1/2, Trigun, Ruroni Kenshin, Inu Yasha, and Cowboy Bebop made it to list...I've watched these and finished a few of them, but I definetly think I should watch the others that were on the list as well...^^

I think it was a list of the top 25 anime series, not movies!

Like I said, a little something for everyone! As for me, Evangelion, Fruits Basket, Love Hina, Sailor Moon, Hellsing, Fushigi Yugi, Chobits, Akira, Tenchi Muyo!, Azumanga Daioh, Cardcaptor Sakura and Excel Saga are in my collection, so I've watched half of the titles on that list!

Now that I think about it, I'm surprised about the Gundam entry. I figured the very first Gundam series or Gundam Wing would've made the list instead of Seed! URGH! Chalk that one up to short attention span!

Evangelion in the top? Great animes like Dragonball Z and Initial D is somewhere bottom? Full Metal Panic and Azumanga Daioh are also at the near bottom? These people really don't know what a good anime is supposed to be! Sad.

Sad indeed - if they really knew what good anime is, then crap like DBZ wouldn't appear at all! :D

Cowboy Bebop, #2, good enough for me!

Nov 15, 2004, 13:37
Bah.. Bebop should be number one.. Evangelion is good but not better than Bebop..

And enough with the Dragonball bashing. You know you all loved it at one point, just because you've moved on to what you like to call "better" anime does not make Dragonball any less influential or classic. Stop the hating, you are not too cool for Dragonball, and calling it "crap" is an example of ignorance. Not only does it deserve to be in the Top 25 but it deserves to be in atleast the Top 15, if not 10.

You're wrong about that, KoT. I have no reason to lie about this and can say with all honesty that I absolutely NEVER liked DBZ. I gave the show a try when it was on Cartoon Network but was turned off almost immediately, all that yelling and smashing and bashing and fighting and crap blowing up, the white pages had more of a plot.

Sure, DBZ was the kind of show kids loved because it didn't require much in the way of intellect or an attention span, how that show managed to be so popular is a mystery to me. But if you like DBZ, hey, more power to you, but don't assume EVERYBODY loved it at one time or another. After all, it's wrong to assume because it makes an *** out of u and me.

When I say everybody, I think it is safe to assume I don't actually mean everybody. Whenever I say "everybody" or "all" do you really think I mean all? Obviously not. I can pick many people who don't like Dragonball, my mother for example, but who really cares if my mother likes Dragonball? Not me, that's for sure.. Heh. And I meant more of the younger generation who grew up with it, you didn't have the chance to grow out of it because you were already mature and I guess you decided you didn't like it right in the beginning. I and many others on other hand, had Dragonball/Z as one of our first Anime, and it is an excellent and influental Anime to start out with. It is no longer my favorite, obviously I have matured a little and now have different tastes in Anime, but that doesn't mean I would jump ship and act superior to the Anime that started the craze. I am not so quick to chant "Dragonball iS t3H Cr@PPy OMG iT d03Sn'T d3s3Rve 2 B 0n da 25 BEST OMGWTF!!" Because that is just wrong, it does deserve it's place. Many more recent famous manga artists have commended Toriyama Akira on Dragonball saying it influenced them, because it has, Dragonball is a classic that can never be touched, especially by screaming Sailor Moon fanboys..

I've been watching Dragonball since when I was like 5, when I was in Hong Kong, on Chinese television, and then on the English channel it shows the Japanese version,so I watched both with my brother
and then Dragonball Z, it became more violent so they shifted the showing time to 12 or 1 am midnight, and we stayed up and watched them

my brother is no longer into DB, but I still am,it is still me favourite along with Slam Dunk

I almost have the complete set of the Chinese version of the manga

the American dubbed version sucks, the voice actors are like tryin so hard and their lines suck, and whats up with the American version of theme song? they just keep repeating 'Dragonball,Dragonball,Dragonball Zee'...what the hell... :okashii:

get the Japanese version with English subtitles, they are much better, authentic

Dragonball GT sucks,it is not created by Akira Toriyama, Toriyama ended Dragonball after Majin Buu was defeated, perfect ending, but the fans wanted more Dragonball, and then the publisher and the TV station found someone else to draw GT,to rip-off people's money, the whole thing sucks, I do not recognize GT as part of the Dragonball series.

Yet another incorrect assumption, my friend! I never said I was mature, just old! :D

Well, it could be argued that Sailor Moon has been more influential because a great many people discovered anime thanks to the show, AND, it tapped into a huge, and previously hidden reservoir of anime fans----females, as SM gave them something of their own to enjoy instead of giant robots, samurai dramas, sci-fi and slam-bang stuff like DBZ.

It's because of SM that shojo anime is so popular today with all ages and both genders. Despite my age, I'm not at all ashamed to admit that I love shojo, and it represents three quarters of the anime titles I own, everything from Cardcaptor Sakura, Boys Over Flowers, Fruits Basket, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Wedding Peach and more. And, for the record, I'm damned proud to say that I'm a Sailor Moon fanboy!!!!!
