I thought I was the only one...
I am getting it sometime this week, I am so psyched about it. It looks really great. Words cannot express how much I need to get it.. Heh. I can't wait..

Yeah, I know! The only draw back is I wish you could PictoChat more that 100 ft. That's a good space anyway for schools, movies, concerts, and other things. Plus if you have 2-3 friends at your house who has one, you will be up all night. I CAN'T WAIT!!

i was looking at getting one.. but then i read Gabe's review of it (over at penny-arcade.com) so far I've agreed with everything he has said, so if he says something sucks, I don't buy it.
"We also got our hands on a DS last week along with a few games. I just don’t know what to make of it. Every time I pick it up to play a game it feels awkward. It’s big, heavy and uncomfortable to hold.
...
<long review of different games goes here>
...
Overall the entire DS experience for me has been very underwhelming. The games range from worthless to decent and the machine itself feels awkward. Nintendo still hasn’t proved to me that the DS isn’t just another Virtual Boy. Maybe the next batch of games will do that. With the PSP looming on the horizon they don’t have a lot of time to waste."

I'm buying one for my son for his Birthday - Dec 14. I'm sure I'll get a lot of game time out of it as well. :D

i think it may just be as useless as when they came out with wireless pokemon battle indicators. When someone else had a pokemon set up like yourself, you would be notified and you could battle them. However i'm not a fan of nintendo anymore. I truly think I could do a better job of running Nintendo and Sega corporation with my ideas. They are slowly going on a decline. What a pity. :(
You know, I'm still not completely sold on the dual-screen/stylus idea either. Sometimes it sounds more like a gimmick than a genuine evolution of handheld gaming (though I have to admit that the picto-chat does sound like fun.)
Still, though, you know what? None of this matters to me, because I've already decided that even if it turns out to be the only game I ever buy for the system, I will purchase a DS solely to play the latest installment of the Gyakuten Saiban (http://www.capcom.co.jp/saiban3/) series, already confirmed for release.
I don't suppose that anyone else out there is a fan of Capcom's seminal "courtroom battle" series?

woah, that game looks totally kewl..
but that game works for the SP aswell, doesn't it?
The problem with cool stuff like that note system in the DS is that a requirement for using it is that all your mates have one aswell.. which is usually NOT the case.

I checked out the DS in the store and really it didn't impress me that much. Well, at least not enough for my kids to scrap their SP's and get a new one!
woah, that game looks totally kewl..
but that game works for the SP aswell, doesn't it?Yes, Gyakuten Saiban is a great series -- it's a shame that Capcom probably will never give it an English language release.
But anyway, I should have been more clear. There have already been three games in the series released, all for the GBA (the link I posted there was for the third game), but the next game in the series is going to be coming out for the DS (only) sometime in the near future.
But yeah, it's a great series, I'd give it my highest recommendation if you can handle the Japanese -- there's a demo version on the homepage. It's just a very original concept for a game (who knew being a lawyer could be so fun?) with simply brilliant writing, fascinating characters (with very distinctive character designs), unique gameplay, and a really catchy soundtrack -- everything just works well together. I laughed, I cried (seriously!) -- probably one of my favorite game series ever.
The problem with cool stuff like that note system in the DS is that a requirement for using it is that all your mates have one aswell.. which is usually NOT the case.
Yeah, this is so true. It's fun in theory, but how often will you actually be able to enjoy it the way it was meant to be enjoyed? I read stories of how much fun people had with it at E3, which got me interested, but yeah... at a place like E3, of course there's going to be a whole lot of people to talk to. How often will you be in a situation like that in real life? In downtown Tokyo maybe you'll find people to chat with, but how about gamers who live in more rural areas? Somehow I don't think a range of 100 feet (is that right?) is going to cut it.

You have got to be kidding me. The DS rules. It has dual screens, one is touch, a built in microphone port for voice recognition, wireless connectivity, pictochat, backward compatability (GBA games can be played on it) and more. The launch titles are obviously not going to be that impressive as they haD to rush to get it out before PSP (Which was one of the main problems for Gamecube, they let PS2 get out there before them). But they have over 120 games in development, so I have that to look forward to. On the other hand you have the PSP. The PSP is simply a smaller PS2, it is not innovative, it is not creative, it introduces nothing new. You cannot play other PS2 games on it, you cannot play normal DVDs on it. You have to buy specially made PSP DVDs. It is more expensive, the games are more expensive. It has nothing to be desired, it really has no purpose for being made.
That said, I have a feeling PSP will sell more. Why? Because people don't like change, they don't like new and creative things, they want the same crap recycled over and over. Take this forum for example, and that is why I have a bad feeling. Sony already has a larger fanbase than Nintendo so all Sony fanboys will blindly buy the system without comparing the two. The DS is really great and I hate to see everyone in this thread who hasn't even played it yet judge it and say things when they don't know what they are talking about.
Long live Nintendo, Innovation and Creativity.

Hmmm? Was that rant directed at me? I have played it. If you read my post, you will see that I tried it at the store. It just didn't impress me that much...not enough for me to trash my kids SP's to get the new DS. I'm not a huge fan of playstation anyway. Well, I did enjoy the PS when it came out, but I never really bought into the PS2. I personally like the gameboy platforms/games. I also like the gamecube. I just didn't see anything that great about the new DS.

Nope. Wasn't directed at you. It was directed at anyone who is hating on the DS while not even have played it or know anything about it.
King of Tokyo,
Man, those "fanboy" comments are a little harsh, don't you think?
I can't speak for the others, but I'm looking forward to both systems. Saying that the PSP "has no purpose being made" just it doesn't have all these features is a little silly, don't you think? As far as I'm concerned, a system is only as good as the games that are made for it. Nintendo can put everything and the kitchen sink into the DS, but whether or not it's worth my money in the end comes down to what developers can do with those features. It's not that people "don't want change", it's that people are reserving judgment as to whether or not this 'change' will make gaming more enjoyable for them.
Like I said, I'm going to be buying a DS, but that's just because it has a game that I want to play. If some interesting games come out for the PSP, you can bet I'll pick up one of those, too.
Innovation just for the sake of innovation does not necessarily equal fun. The Power Glove and R.O.B. the Robot were innovative. The Virtual Boy was innovative. I've been as big a fan of Nintendo and their systems through the years as anybody, but even I have to admit that not _all_ of their innovations have panned out. I have a lot of hope for the DS, but I'm not going to sit here and preach that it's inherently superior to the PSP just because it has all these new features.
In the end, whether this generation of the "handheld war" is won by Nintendo or Sony is going to be determined by which system gets the better games -- just as it's always been.

I think I will get a Nintendo DS, because: 1. It has revolutionary gameplay possibilities 2. You can play all the GBA/SP games on it as well 3. It's not very expensive 4. It has big support from game companies around the world so you can expect alot of games for the DS.
Some of the 3d games on the DS look pixelish such as Asphalt Urban GT although I bet it plays nice. However I believe the games that will be the most interesting and cool on the DS will be combinations of 2d/3d into one game and ofcourse also make good use of the new gameplay options.
Also now you can finally play real Adventure games on the handheld, because of the touch screen. Adventure games: Tantei Kibukawa Ryosuke Jiken Dan (The Incident Files of Detective Ryosuke Kibukawa): The Masquerade Lullaby http://www.genki.co.jp/games/kibu_kamen/index.html and "Another" http://media.ds.ign.com/media/707/707312/imgs_1.html look interesting.
I think puzzle games such as Mr. Driller Drill Spirits and Mahjong DS http://media.ds.ign.com/media/707/707321/imgs_1.html are gonna kick *** for some reason on the DS. :D
They will probably make a cool new Zelda and Castlevania for the Nintendo DS too. :)

Oh and by the way, to add another reason why I find this JREF DS hating so shocking
Nintendo's all-new DS system appears to be in strong favor with the retail community in Japan. A survey conducted by weekly game publication Famitsu reveals that retailers are more excited about the DS than they are the PSP and, surprisingly, even Dragon Quest VIII.
The survey, which appears in the 12/3 issue of the magazine, asked ninety-eight retailers to list the holiday products that most excite them. Based on these results, Famitsu assigned points to the various products to create a top ten list.
DS scored 295 points, making it number one on the list. It was followed by Dragon Quest VIII at 292 points and the PSP at 201 points. Following the top three were Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (88 points), PS2 software in general (56 points), the slim PlayStation 2 (53 points), Tales of Rebirth (39 points), Gran Turismo 4 (33 points), the Dragon Quest "Slime" controller (31 points) and Halo 2 (28 points). Yes, Halo 2 was beaten by a pointy, blue controller.
Looking specifically at hardware, the magazine asked retailers which of the two portables they were most excited by. 61.6% named the DS, with 19.2% naming the PSP. The remaining 19.2% wouldn't answer either way.
I thought that was pretty cool.. Heh.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a great Nintendo follower.. I've got a cube and a GBA.. but as it looks, I'd rather put my money into an SP (sleek foldable design and feels so good to hold) than the DS.. It just looks really uncomfortable, and my fears were confirmed by Gabe. I know none of my friends will buy one, so the "cool features" will be worth nothing to me either.

Haha.. Well.. I see that this all mighty "Gabe" has discouraged you from purchasing a DS because.. Well.. Because "Gabe" doesn't like it.. But I'd try it out for yourself before I dismiss it, after all I know alot of people who bought the DS and love it, would you take their opinions? No, so I don't think you should let someone else's opinion influence your own.
Oh and it would seem the only reason this Gabe doesn't like the DS that much is the games, and that is because it is only launch and they do not have all the games out yet. Wait and see.
But it's not like you are not allowed to dislike it.. Heh.. I'd just recommend actually trying it and then hating it.
I admit I was wrong in saying it has absolutely zero purpose, it does have a purpose, to play the same PS2 games, that you buy again in a smaller disc form, to play on a smaller PS2, which you have to buy again. For a higher price. Are you trying to say that there will be no new games developed for the PSP, only re-releases of old PS2 games? If this is true, it would certainly lower my opinion of the system, but as far as I know this is _not_ the case, and somehow I doubt Sony would be that stupid.
And if you are wondering about games for the DS..I don't know if that massive list of planned DS titles was intended for me or not, but I never even suggested that the DS won't be getting some good games that will no doubt be worth playing. In fact, I've already said that I _will_ be getting a DS because it will be getting a game that I'm very much looking forward to playing.
Oh and by the way, to add another reason why I find this JREF DS hating so shocking...
...
But it's not like you are not allowed to dislike it.. Heh.. I'd just recommend actually trying it and then hating it.You have a really interesting definition of the word "hate." TwistedMac, for example, seems to me to just be saying that he had a few (ergonomic) concerns about the system, read a review that confirmed these concerns, and so has decided that for now that he'd be content with a GBA SP (which will also be cheaper and already has an excellent selection of games).
Where's the "hate" here? Some people (like me) are cautiously enthusastic. Others are just saying that they're not yet convinced that this "innovative" system is worth the investment at this point. I would say that these opinions are at least as valid as yours (which seems to be that the DS is omnipotent and will crush the PSP like the unworthy piece of rubbish that it is.)

Okay...
First: It's a little awkward for controlling the Metroid demo, but other than that the DS is extremely comfortable. When I picked mine up yesterday, I bought Feel the Magic XY/XX since Mario was sold out already, and this one game at least uses the touch screen/microphone exclusively for as far as I've gotten (Scene 10). Everyone I've talked to that hasn't seen it yet has said the touch screen sounds gimmicky, but it's not--in Mario it's used as an analog control with the thumb strap and in Feel the Magic it's the only control (with the stylus).
Second:It's extremely fun, in a Katamari Damacy kind of way, and has yet to get boring.
Third: The demo machines don't do the real one justice. I can't explain it, they just don't.
As for the PSP, well... It just looks to me like another way of milking Final Fantasy VII, but I'll still get it also, most likely. Just because. :p

I haven't even got to play the demo yet. DARN IT. But I am still looking forward to it. I am more of a Sony person myself. They sold me on the wireless and PictoChat though. Also the games, I played Harvest Moon on PS. LOL, Yes it is sorta dorky, but it was good, and now it is on the DS. I think I will like it.
For people who say it is uncomfortable: Many people say either way. It's about your hand's size and stuff. I still think I would like it! ^_^

Coming out on top in a winter season that sees the release of new Sony hardware and a new Dragon Quest game (as well as a new Dragon Quest controller) should spell good things for the DS. If retailer predictions are right, the system's 12/2 Japanese launch should be lots of fun. Stay tuned to IGNDS for more in the coming weeks!"

oook, so a friend of mine is the editor of a pretty popular web-based console-games review site, so I was over at his place yesterday and checked out some of the new stuff he gets for free from game companies giving him to review. Among other things he got 2 (yes 2!) DS machines.
So we had some fun trying that stuff out.
the screens are fantastic. very clear and all that stuff. everything looks marvelous.
the "clunkyness" actually wasn't too bad, and the little thumb-thing was kewl beyond words.
but where the general feel of the system in my hand was satisfactory, I still had serious issues with the weight.
Don't get me wrong, it's not very heavy.
But the top part weighs like 3 times as much as the bottom, which makes it very top-heavy to hold.
the bottom part also feels very plastic-y and I was almost afraid I'd wreck the miniscule so-called buttons.
overall I still say I'll wait until they release a modified version (I'm sure it'll come as soon as popularity on this model starts to dwindle.)
So the night ended with us looking through his mail to find 6 new games, all sent to him for free and to keep. I'd hate his guts for getting everything I don't, but he let me borrow Tales of Symphonia still in the plastic wrapping, fresh for me to devour, so I still love him.

If a Final Fantasy game ends up coming out for it (and it's not a remake), I'll probably get it. I'd be lying if I said that wasn't the only reason I got a GameCube and free Game Boy Player.
Here is some interesting news about the Nintendo DS:
Nintendo DS a sales sensation
Nintendo's new handheld game machine is making a splash with holiday shoppers, who snapped up more than 500,000 units in the product's first week on the market.
Japanese game giant Nintendo reported Tuesday that more than 90 percent of available Nintendo DS units were snapped up in the week after their November 21 launch.
The buying frenzy is already creating shortages at some retailers, a situation becoming distressingly familiar this year for anyone with gamers on their shopping list. As of Wednesday, Amazon.com had DS units available only from Amazon Marketplace partners, some of whom were charging a $100 premium over the $150 list price for the handheld. CompUSA didn't even have the DS listed on its Web site, while specialty retailers GameStop and EBGames listed the DS as back-ordered, with EBGames promising delivery by January 31.
"With Nintendo DS sales moving faster than anticipated, some locations have reported sellouts, and Nintendo predicts the initial North American supply will be depleted within days," Nintendo of America said in a statement. "As additional shipments are rushed to stores by this weekend to meet the demand, Nintendo expects to sell 1 million Nintendo DS units in North America alone by the end of 2004."
Nintendo expects to sell 5 million DS units worldwide by March 31, the end of its fiscal year, and had to open a third factory to crank out units fast enough to meet advance demand in Japan, where the device goes on sale Thursday.
Big opening numbers are likely to give Nintendo an even bigger lead over Sony, which is set to enter the handheld gaming market later this month with the PlayStation Portable. Sony executives recently confirmed reports of PSP inventory issues, saying only 200,000 units will be available when the machine goes on sale in Japan on December 12.
