So I ask the ever telling question: What got you hooked? How did you come across it? What was your fiirst impression? What did you hear first? Who introduced you? etc...

I'll tell you my story: I originally started with music in anime that I liked I began to look for more music by the artistof the music I really liked. So I started with Jpop. I started talking to some of my friends who also listened to music from Japan and then I can across CDJapan and started looking up the artists I thought were cool (^^; hehe I was so young...) I traveled to the land of Bob where I got to here music by some of these artists and I was instantly hooked! Needless to say I am now a Jrock junkie!

Horizon introduced me to Gackt. That's how I got to know all about him. She introduced me to others to like L'arc~en~ciel, Hyde, hide, Dir en grey...I could go on. But, that's how it really started. I love Gackt-sama more than her now. She likes to fight with me over who is better. Hyde or Gackt. She's always on Hyde's side. *giggle* We have this thing how Gackt is God and Hyde is his Goddess.

Hey! -looks offended- You love Gackt more than ME?!? -growls- Why I never!
Oh well! Least I've got the more talented, more prettier, more hotter, more beautiful (and the list goes on) one! -Pets HYDE plushie- Plus I have a chance to get a HYDE plushie. I don't think there's one of Gackt, so -blows raspberry-

Oh yesh! XD Gackt is our god (even though HYDE's better! Oh well, some cultures had goddess' as their main worships!) and like every good ruler/king/god/anyone of importance, he needed someone to rule by his side. You know, like a queen/goddess person, so naturally, HYDE!! Their fault for flirting so much! :cute:

Does anime count...? XD NightCRAWLER (heehee! XD Revenge!) got me into Kotani Kinya (kind of. I wanted to hear him to begin with, but meh...) and as I was looking up pictures of the little cutie, I got myself into JRock by finding myself at an avatar page where it had all sorts of JRock (and some JPop) avatars. There I found Gackt which got me to find Dir en grey (at first I thought Dir en grey was just a screwed-up looking chick) and, well, I think that's more information than the question asked, so I'll shut up now. :bluush:

I rarely listen to any other type of music as well (willingly that is anyway). I just listen to a band called Trapt and that's the only English band I listened to willingly for a long time now.

Nov 29, 2004, 10:17
I know that but come on. Gackt said that if Hyde was a women than he would be perfect for him. Gackt likes men and women. It's obvious. Hyde I don't think is bisexual but still. It's just for fun to think that way. Who cares if their both male. When your in love your in love and it shouldn't matter if their the same sex or not. That's my view though. :emblaugh:

i dont think they are gay at all. i really envy their friendship, they are so close to the point that Gackt wants to kiss Hyde. it's really great to have a close friend like that.

Nightwalker
Nov 29, 2004, 12:32
That's true. Sometime I'm afraid to say, I am close to friends that I want to kiss them sometime to let them know how much they mean to me. But, I don't know how they would react that's the thing. Meh. Bwhahaha! I know Hyde isn't gay or anything but when it comes to Gackt I think he may like men but like women too. He would probably go for the women though.

I hate to break it to ya, but they are both MALE...and cause they are good friends doesn't automatically means they're gay..that's why he has a WIFE!!! you crazy fangirls xD

And I highly doubt that's the reason WHY he has a wife. I think he has a wife because he's in love with her...

And just because we like fanservice doesn't mean we're fangirls...

And like Nightwalker said, it doesn't matter whether too people are the same gender. Love is all that matters.

i seriously think that Gackt and Hyde are a match made in heaven, lovers or best friends. only if hyde wasnt married...

Yeah, but it sounded like you were saying that because they're good friends that's why he has a wife...XD I'm weird and stupid, alright? XD

And, again, it had SOUNDED like you had because just how you worded it. You said "I hate to break it to you, but they are both MALE", which sounds quite homophobic and like you think that just because people are male, they can't do anything like that with each other. So, yeah...It just sounded like it...

And I have NEVER EVER thought that every jrocker is gay and that they're all in love with each other. Not for that reason anyway. Some of them just might be gay, but, yeah...

And I know what you mean. I mean, girls wear men's clothing all the time now and no one thinks they're lesbians all the time. I never saw it that way either.

I hope you don't mind my interrupting this conversation, as I wanted to put my thoughts down about first J-Pop/Rock experiences...

Like many people, my first exposure was through anime. The first CDs I started picking up were soundtracks to my favorite shows, though I'll admit that before that I actually used to tape the songs off of my videos onto audio cassettes so I could listen to them while driving, etc.

:bluush:

This was back in 1994, mind you, so still pretty low-tech...

The first actual non-anime CD I picked up was L'arc~en~ciel's "True", which I did simply because I really liked "Blurry Eyes" from DNA^2... you might say, "Ummmm... 'Blurry Eyes' is on Tierra, you know..." Well, at the time, I didn't know... so I picked up a L'arc CD completely at random. The opening double shot of "Fare Well" and "Caress of Venus" completely hooked me, and I've been a big fan ever since.

Since then, I've been expanding my horizons and now own J-Pop/Rock music from about 1950 forward in just about every genre you can think of... but for me, L'arc started it all. And this is coming from a 30-something year old, so no accusations of fanboy/girlism here... just pure enjoyment of their musical sound. And the truly scary thing... now my dad really likes L'arc too!

How cool is that?

Nice to meet y'all, and thanks for indulging me...

I don't think that band is going to care because they are making millions anyways so they could care less I would think. Ya of course they want you to buy their product but still. They have so much money...they are not going to care really if we buy their stuff or not. Their not going to go broke anytime soon.

Well though that is true, Nightwalker, how would you feel if you were in the situation? They are making millions, and perhaps a single CD doesn't matter, but with all the "fans" that just download material, it can add up to be allot. If someone is really a fan then they will go out of there way to buy the merchandise to support their artist.

If their good musicians, then they probably might care more about the fact that people are stealing their songs because they are their songs, things that they put a lot of time into, their heart, soul, whatever else sounds corny enough instead of just the money factor.

Nightwalker
Dec 8, 2004, 05:26
I would think that the band wouldn't care if we are buying their products. They should care about us loving their lyrics and music and seeing what they are trying to send us a message through song and if were getting that. If we love their music that's all that matters really. If that stuff was more available to me yes I would but it but it's not so I have to make do with what I got.

Not exactly. I like their songs and I respect Kyo's voice on a cd.. but live? The only thing I can think of of what I've heard in any diru live(though I'm sure the fact it was recorded could effect this) is ...what..the..heck.. Personally I'm not all thrilled about seeings Diru live. So yes the shows get them money, everything does, but its the thought here that counts. I don't call downloading a bunch of junk a very thoughtful way of showing you are a fan.

Illaparatzo-sama

Deg's older songs that I've heard recorded live (like Schwein no Isu and Rasetsukoku) sound really TERRIBLE, but I think Kyo's voice has improved a lot in the last couple of years, and his live performances are spot-on if he's not occupied with scratching himself up.

Kyo's scratching is very extra. but he is energetic, i like that.

i don't know, downloading isn't exactly right, but meh, it's not really gonna stop any time soon. maybe if artists lower their price on CDs more people will buy them. not everyone have much money to spare. i find that sometimes spending 40 bucks on a cd is too much, and most likey there will be songs that i dont like on it.

I do agree that CD prices are high and that listen to a song on the internet may promote you to hear more but I think it should also promote you to buy their music and think of all the pretty pictures you get to look at!! Also, I think if you really love the band alot its nice to show how much you love them by buying their products every once in awhile and spending that little bit of money every now and then. I dont think dowloading is wrong but it always makes me feel so guilty so as soon as I have the money I but the CD. I do understand dowloading videos/pvs if you live well, not in Japan or Asia (or rather where you have access to them on tv) because you cant see them any other way. but If you can, try and buy the CD!! :-)

It really is hard not to love Jrock! But with Americans...they have the problem where if the song is not sung in clear english they wont listen to it. No matter how good it is!! They have a problem with it and it gets to me alot. Like when they streotype anime as Yu Gi Oh and Pokemon and call it crap they think that all anime is like that so they refuse to watch more. Americans are close minded and stupid (sorry if I offend anyone!!) I live in America but I refuse to call myself an American because I dont agree with the American views...

Horizon
Dec 18, 2004, 00:45
I don't think it's just Americans though who are like that. Most English (and ONLY English) speakers are, or at least North Americans. :okashii:

And my brother does that; stereotypes anime and whatnot because of the "crap" he's seen...But then again, he hasn't given it a chance. He's more of the type that just doesn't like it because it's not in English and plus, he's actually a rascist, so...:angryfire

But this is coming from a 17, almost 18 year old boy who still likes the Ninja Turtles and has Tinkerbell (sp?) on his wallet, so...

Illaparatzo-sama
Dec 18, 2004, 05:03
People are like that EVERYWHERE. No need to generalize one area. The US has tons of anime cons, with tens of thousands of people coming to them.

And Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are incredibly awesome. Unless it's the NEW ones.

Horizon
Dec 18, 2004, 08:02
True, but I think English people are just slightly more worse. A lot of them think that just because something isn't in English, that it's not worth their time

Plus, a lot of them also think that people should all just learn how to speak English and stuff...

(I'm not sure if I worded that correctly...xDD)

Both of those are probably the direct causes of them being oh-so very, very aware that English is the dominant langauge...Although I don't think a lot of them realize just how difficult English is too learn, let alone master, if it isn't your first language...

Does Canada have a lot of anime cons too...? I can't remember...

And yeah, but how many people live in America...? Millions and millions!

And maybe the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles would still be at least a little bit good, if my brother didn't have pictures hanging all over the house of them. And if he'd quite making fun of the fact that I like anime, because, after all, a lot of anime at least has adult themes and isn't directed mainly at 5-10 year old boys...

And I'll shut up now...^^;;

Horizon
Dec 18, 2004, 20:18
If I meant the English as in the British, I'd say -gasp- THE BRITISH!!!! Who'd have ever thought?!?!?

And I wasn't just talking about Americans; I was also talking about most Canadians.

Most North Americans if you will

What I mean is a lot of people listen to English music, regardless if they can barely speak a word of it or not, but most English speakers don't seem to give their music a chance and they even insult it, without ever listening to it.

Probably afraid of the culture! God forbid they WITNESS CULTURE!! xD

Illaparatzo-sama
Dec 18, 2004, 20:24
Aheh. The English are the British. Americans are another animal completely. And since you've obviously spoken to and gotten the opinion of 'most' of the English speakers of the world, I'll leave you and your fine opinions alone.

I agree with Horizon. My mom is always like "What CD do you want? Oh, that japanese sh*t...". She can't stand to listen to it just because they're speaking a different language (She doesn't like Rammstein, either). She can't seem to undertsand that the music is just as good, and lots of times better, than american artists. She doesn't like anime, either, just because it's japanese.

And for whatever reason, she can't comprehend that people over the age of 15 make japanese culture their number one passtime. It's not like it's something kids made up...it's a place, heh.

True, and I wasnt just talking about the Japanese language. People in the average US person doesnt like things that aren't in englih. Remember that 90% of what goes on at cons is english dubbed stuff not the Japanese. I am rather annoyed by the club they started at my school for anime for example. I figured that we could watch things undubbed and be ok but the only thing they actually watched undubbed was a Dragonball GT VHS so they had no choice. I heard the other day they were playing the Yu Gi Oh card game....
-_-;;;

But all that is beside the point....

And yes the old Ninja turtles do rock!! I can say noting about the Tinkerbell thing though.....O.o

Making a country's culture your number one past time is a very strange thing indeed. I've been to numerous cons, by the way, and I see a fair split between dub and sub. Most new aquisitions by the companies are displayed subbed. The dealer's hall has no less of one than the other.

And yet, Lydia, aren't you one of those generalizing so-called "fangirls"...?

What's the difference?

And yes, I'd have to say most Americans sure aren't of the same species as everyone else...

And my dad calls Japanese music "JapCrap" and calls all the JRockers "JapFreaks" or possibly even "faggots" if my brother's around. And they both seem to like to go on about their, ummm..."smallness"...0.o

And yet, Lydia, aren't you one of those generalizing so-called "fangirls"...?

No. Want to point something out?

I dont care about fangirlism. I say if you are a fan and a girl then you are a fangirl. some are just more extreme then others.*points to self*

But yeh that is true. however alot more people come because of the dubbed stuff. I see less and less people around who really like watching things subbed. Even if they like it better then the dubbed they tend to be to lazy to actually read the subtitles while watching it and unless, fluent(scuse my spelling) in Japanese, they dont understand what they are saying. thus there is a drop in jrock/pop fans because they dont know what they are saying and dont want to take the time to look up the lyrics.

I'M A FANGIRL!! -cough- Erm...uumm..anyway...

I usually prefer stuff dubbed, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying japanese music, or german, or mexican, or whatever. I enjoy the music, and the way the singer's voice blends with that music. I connect with the message of a song after I find out that I like the way it sounds. I think that's what gives me the ability to like all kinds of music, and not limit myself to dark, angsty songs, or sappy pop songs, or lighthearted country tunes. I like it all. ^.^"

No. Want to point something out?

Yeah! Actually I want to point out a HELL of a lot of stuff!

But I guess I'll just stick to this...:

I don't remember what board it was, or who said it (it even might have been you. I wouldn't be surprised...>.>), but someone was going on about how we shouldn't be generalizing JRock stuff and saying it's all better than English music, because apparently it's not "right" to generalize, and yet, that person, and people who agreed with him/her, generalize so-called fangirls ALL the time, do they not?

"Oh! They only like the music because they think they're hot!"

"Oh! They all want to have Gackt's babies!"

Yatta, yatta, yatta!

More than just slightly hypocritical, isn't it...?

No, I meant point something out that can be directly attributed to me. That's pretty vague. I can't recall saying anything like "Oh! They only like the music because they think they're hot!", or "Oh! They all want to have Gackt's babies!".

Neeeevermiiiiind.

I could do that, but then I'd have to remember. I've got too bad a memory to do so though.

Plus, I'm not all that good at getting my point across anyway, so meh...
