Hello!
I'm doing a Sociolinguistic project on the vocal characterization of animated characters in Disney's The Lion King in various languages, including Japanese. I will be studying the way the characters' personalities are conveyed through their speech.
Since I am not a native speaker of Japanese, I was hoping I could ask for someone else's insight on this. If you'd like to take part in the project, and if it's not too inconvenient, please reply to this post and answer a few questions after listening to recordings from the movie which I have uploaded to my school server. You do not need to have seen the movie in either language to participate, but please note if you have or have not.

First of all...
How old are you?
Have you seen The Lion King?
If so, in which language(s)?
The next questions are mostly the same for each song's character(s). Please answer them keeping in mind that I am looking more for the way that these characters are portrayed vocally and not so much for the direct meaning of their words in the context of the song/story.
And don't worry, you don't have to write a ton for each one. Brief answers, incomplete sentences, or lists are just fine.
I. Be Prepared
(Referring to Scar, the lion who speaks in the intro and sings most of the song)
1. Does he have a specific accent? If so, what does it suggest about his character?
2. Does he use particular word forms, vocabulary, or expressions that stand out or seem significant in regards to his character? If so, please note some examples and what they add to your impression of him.
3. From only hearing this song, what assumptions can you make about his personality?
II. I Just Can't Wait To Be King
(Referring to the young lions Simba and Nala and their bird guardian Zazu)
1. Do any of these characters have specific accents? If so, what does it suggest about them?
2. Do they use particular word forms, vocabulary, or expressions that stand out or seem significant in regards to their characters? If so, please note some examples and what they add to your impression of them.
3. Are there major characterizing contrasts between Simba/Nala's and Zazu's speech? (e.g., differences relating to age, formality, slang, etc.)
4. From only hearing this song, what assumptions can you make about their personalities?
III. Hakuna Matata
(Referring to Timon the meerkat and Pumbaa the warthog)
1. Do either of these characters have specific accents? If so, what does it suggest about them?
2. Do they use particular word forms, vocabulary, or expressions that stand out or seem significant in regards to their characters? If so, please note some examples and what they add to your impression of them.
3. From only hearing this song, what assumptions can you make about their personalities?
Lastly, an optional question applying to any of the characters (for those who have seen the movie):
Do any of their voices fit with their characters in the story to represent a certain stereotype? If so, how?
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
Also, if you could forward this to anyone else you think might be interested/able to participate, that would be great!
Please either respond in this forum or email me your answers at csalter@macalester.edu
