View Full Version : A Question About Game Consoles

Pardon me if this question has already been asked, but which gaming console is the best for the money, PS2, XBOX or GameCube? I'm thinking of buying one for myself (as if I don't already have enough gadgets cluttering my place) and would like to know what the pros and cons of each system are. Any help here would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
:-)

It depends, really, on the type of games you want.

*If you want much multiplayer, Sony's out, and either Nintendo or X-Box is best.
*If you want "mature" games, Nintendo's out almost completely (minus their RE games, but I think those are "T")
*If you want Final Fantasy, Sony's the only way to go. Yea, there's that one game on the GC, but without three other people (not to mention four GBAs) it sucks.

Basically, if you're most interested in Splinter Cell or (ugh) Halo, or any similar type of game, X-Box is the only choice. I really can't stand it, but I'll admit it. Especially if online multiplayer ever becomes an issue.

If you want games that look cutesy but may-or-may-not actually be kiddish (My town on Animal Crossing, for instance, is definitely "M for Mature") or fun multiplayer games for parties, then Gamecube is the best.

If you want more "traditional" RPGs (although I don't know if Yuna Croft qualifies FF as traditional, anymore) then PS2 is your best, because you have full access to all PS and PS2 games, and there were a hell of a lot of good RPGs between the two. Some PS2s have the infamous disc read error on some/all discs, but I've had mine since day one and never had an issue with games or DVDs (not counting Gameshark hacks) not playing properly.

For DDR, X-Box is the worst possible choice. I mean, who the hell wants to pay for songs that are unlocked for free on the PS2 versions? X-Box's strong point is multi through games like Splinter Cell, not DDR or RPGs.

XBox seems to be the best choice for FPS games and for online play. Its the only console I can talk about as its the only one I own. For other styles of games, I'd think the PS2 would be the choice *cough*Katamari Damacy*cough*.

^^ Yeah I agree.

I heard that Katamari Damacy was a "GREAT"game!! and I also agree that you wouldn't want to play RPGs or "DDR" on the Box.

Also, good point above about Final Fantasy games. PS2 all the way there.... I personally don't like the XBox the most because of the somewhat "choppy" graphics at times.... Though, Halo and Topspin don't show this, I would have to choose the PS2 overall. NFL Fever would be my perfect example..... It has horrible gameplay...... It is also very choppy...... It has to be one of the worst games EVER.

Anyway, I think overall I would go with the PS2, but the Box is right behind because of "godly" titles such as Halo, Halo 2, and Topspin (Not to mention they have EA's Lineup.)

If you want fun games, I'd go for the Gamecube! Xbox is perhaps more for first-person shooters etc., and PS2 probably has the most good games in a bigger variety of genres. There's good stuff to be found on all three really, and I don't really think you can lose either way.

Specifications don't really matter, though. Whether or not you'll have fun playing it matters.

I couldn't agree more.
but it's a clear disadvantage to have an old console, having a new just guarantees compability whit new games^^

But in games way, wether you decide from wich game I find the funnyes or whatever I would say x-box :-)

Just wait until next year when all the new generation consoles come out.

Personally, i'd go for a portable unit these days.

Wow! So much information! Thanks a lot, everybody! You've given me plenty to think over before I make a choice. And I'll be sure to let you all know what that choice is!

OMG.. I mean.. Xbox is better with DDR thant PS2..think of it.. Crack the xbox.. or something.. so you can have a HD, install stepmania for xbox and play.. For free.. and all the songs you can download for free..

PS2 = have to buy ugly ddr softwares..

Hopefully it's a PS2, some seem to go for the XBOX but, I'm a PS2 kind of person.

Sorry, Raymond, but it doesn't make sense to buy a system just to crack it, and pirate software that I already own. With the fall of bittorrent I think I've pretty much outgrown internet piracy, anyway--the only thing I could find worth downloading was anime soundtracks.

Reiku

Who said BT has fallen?

>checks his copy of Bit Tornado<

Nope, still works.

Anyway, stepmania isn't piracy, and neither are the simfiles...

...most of them, anyway.

I'd say go for PS2, though this late in the game you're probably better off just waiting for the next gens to come out.

Definitely don't go for X-Box because it's really just a stripped down PC, and unless you like playing kiddie looking games with controllers designed by a mad achitect, GameCube's out too.

The programs still work, but when a tracker like Suprnova falls, it's the beginning of the end. I've heard of a few Swedish trackers that can't be touched and still have everything, but my boyfriend is paranoid bout that sort of thing and asked me to take the program off our comp just-in-case. The computer is in his name, and all, so I agreed and uninstalled everything.

Reiku
Dec 31, 2004, 02:30
Meh, I never used Supernova--I think that site was kind of overrated. There are still plenty of good trackers, and they're not hard to find.

And the next time your BF gives you $#17 about filesharing you should ask him if he's ever taped a football game. :D

BrennaCeDria
Dec 31, 2004, 06:23
Actually, no--he hasn't. And what he's worried about isn't the principle of it, it's the fact that the computer, our internet, etc is all in his name not mine.
