I was just wondering what everyone else thought about all these hollywood remakes of japanese films. Like Ring, Ring 2, Dark water and the Grudge.
Im getting kinda worried they might make an american version of Battle Royale. It would be full of screaming blondes and just like another teen flick... Though im getting a bit ahead of myself now. They haven't even said anything about remaking it... :p

Well, in my opinion...Hollywood is raping an area of film that is yet in many cases uncharted here in the North American market. Many of these viewers going out to see these American remakes are totally obilivious that they are in fact remakes. Many wouldn't even attempt to see the originals even if in some cases that could find a source to view them. The simple fear of having to work extra by reading the subtitles would turn them away. not realizing that in almost even case the Japanese or Asian originals are far more superior in everyway!

I have seen both THE RING and JU-ON remakes and found them to be alright, the major stumbling block though is many facts and overall feeling is lost in the translation from one culture to the next. As far as a BATTLE ROYALE remake, at this point in time I think you need not worry. :relief:

I've seen both The Ring and The Grudge and found them to be pretty decent, though I prefer the originals. I'm still waiting for Hollywood to take a shot at Tomie. Given the teen slasher aspect of that movie (still a popular genre in the U.S.), I'm surprised it hasn't been adapted yet.

:p

I don't really like the way they did "The Ring" and "The Grudge". I mean they did a really good job on it, but the Japanese version is better :souka: LOL~ Most of my friends don't really get the point for "The Ring" ~~~~ it makes me wonder if any non-asians (who aren't into Asian stuff) get the whole point of the movie, besides the part about being kill in 7th days... *sighs*

ALL the Hollywood remakes SUCK BAD ASS! (pardon me) I mean, they really donLt get the whole idea of the movie, and besides, all they do is put a stupid blonde in the lead role and the just exaggerate everything untill it gets all corny. I mean, Ring and the Grudge are two decent movies - the japanese versions that is. They are a little scary and quite beautiful. But the hollywood versions are all like: "We took a japanese movie and now weLll really show em how movies are done! WeLll make it bigger, better and MORE scary!! ----- and the result: they fail.
all we get is a blonde chick, some stupid teenagers screaming and too much of the scary effects, so that the movie looses all of its original feeling and isnLt even a horror movie at all anymore, but just another hollywood-movie. BORING!
The japs know about horror, better that westerners do.
The day they make a hollywood version of Battle Royal is the day I commit suicide.

Thanks.

I'm not to keen on Hollywood doing re-makes of Japanese movies (or any foreign film for that matter). The Hollywood system does nothing but take good films and evicerate them to suit an American audience. Hopefully this is just a fad and Japanese movies will no longer be subjected to such adaptations.

I do not really like the Americian remake. In most cases they use to much special effects and not enough on story. The grudge is slighty different as it seems that the director just remade his original film into English. It is still set in Japan using people from the original film. As for Battle Royale I don't think Hollywood has got the balls to remake it. Too violent, controversial and kids killing kids! No way, not with a bargepole.

Maybe if they DID remake it they'd change the characters to adults. >.> You never know with these Hollywood peoples.

If they did that...I think I'd die.

Then I'd come back as an undead zombie and eat their brains for doing such a stupid thing.

Agree Rabidpanda: They'd probably do a remake on Battle Royale and change the script completely and put... Jennifer Lopez in the lead role! Hollywood does that, it's scary but true.

IF they do a remake on Battle Royale, I'll kill myself with you, Panda, and join you as a zombie. My revenge would be terrifying to watch.... *insane*

On another side, would you think that Kill Bill could've been better if it was produced and casted by the Japanese ? Quentin Tarantino was enamoured of the Kitano's work on Zatoichi that he embarked on this project in the first place.

Ya, but Kill Bill isn't a remake; and I don't count Quentin Tarantino as "hollywood". Quentin is just....... awesome. He's the man.

No, seriously, the less remakes the merrier. (sp?) We don't want any remakes, we should celebrate each time a japanese movie is NOT remade in Hollywood.
suicide club and battle royale are still.....pure.... :confetti:

Sorry to say there is a remake of Dark Water coming out this year. I've seen some reviews about it and they are not good. The original is excellent and will probably make you check your water (does that sound right?)
:banghead: :kaioken: NO REMAKES :smash: :gun:

i must admit, i have heard rumours that they were going to make an american Battle Royale...but to be honest, i don't know how it would work! i can't see censors allowing a film about kids killing kids.
god damn pollitical correctness!

I think it's disgusting. Hollywood is supposed to be like the movie goldmines, but they can't even make an original film. And they can't even make a remake better than an independant original made at 1/100th of the budget.

here here. and besides, i think a lower budget gives it more of an atmosphere...makes it more real! big budgets always spoil a film...they seem to do more than they need to!

Where did you read this! No way! Is there no stopping their madness? They probably all gang together nd live happily ever after when the Kitano character has a change of heart and takes them to Disneyland instead. Scarrier than Gigli.

if you think about it, suicide club is the remake of the suicide club made in 1988 probally

Don't know about Suicide Club, still waiting for my copy to arrive. Maybe they should remake BR by putting all the Hollywood moguls on an island and get them to kill each other off. When one is left still detonate his collar. Then we might get some sense out of Hollywood
