I will be visiting Japan from March 18th to 29th. I will be staying at the New Izu Hotel in Tokyo.
I was hoping there were some Japan natives who might be interested in showing a couple gaijin some cool things to do. maybe help us get settled in a bit. I am studying japanese so I can try my best to speak if need be. This is my firast trip and I want to experience as much as I can.
Thanks in Advance.
Damian
ありがとございます。
ain't no natives here. we chased them all off. sorry :(
however, there are some bitter foreigners who may be of some assistance
and search "penfriend" etc in the forums to find pages/sites that allow correspondence with japanese peeps. good luck

I think that I can offer some information.
Is the first target Akihabara?
Akihabara can walk from a hotel.
There is a shopping district of "AME-YOKO" near Ueno station.
A shopping district of here is famous for a bargain sale.
"This is my firast trip and I want to experience as much as I can."
original poster needs to buy a book (or several)
"LET'S GO JAPAN" is the best (imo)
get the bilingual atlas map of Tokyo...that helps, too....then look up Tokyo and other nearby sites, like Kamakura or Nikko (not really nearby, but it is a day trip) or some other place, like the Landmark Tower in Yokohama, or their Chinatown, and you should have a pretty full schedule.... :D
go to it...
i agree. one reason why i like "let's go" is that they have bilingual maps as well
one thing that i haven't done (that i wanna do in march) is visit the tsukiji fish markets
if i wake up early enough, that is

I recommend "MANNDARAKE" of Broadway Building in a shopping district of "Nakano". :okashii:
Togoshi Ginza shopping district may be interesting.
I recommend "bell common" "shabu-shabu bower Kobeya Baking" of Aoyama if I eat shabu-shabu.
A course dish does it more than 4,000 yen. :relief:
Please try to eat pepper-and-salt meat.
The meat is delicious.

thank you everyone, i have a few guides and maps already so thats not the point, the point of the htread originally was to make new friends in japan and maybe hang out when i get there, maps and guides aren't gouing to show all the "cool" things some of the natives may tend to enjoy.
hiroyuki, here in Arizona we have a Shabu-shabu restaraunt and it is very good, i am very interested in trying it in japan too thank you for the information.
"maps and guides aren't gouing to show all the "cool" things some of the natives may tend to enjoy."

Damicci,
Just to add to Nagashima-san's post, you are not allowed to bring any piece of cloth or towel into the bathing area, except for the small towel you use to wash yourself (and maybe hide your private parts  )
When you're soaking in the hot water, you're not supposed to immerse the towel you used to wash yourself in the water. You either leave it on a shelf or somewhere convenient in the washing area or fold it and put it on top of your head. (Based on traditional sense of sanitation, I guess.)
You see people (especially women) wrapped in towel AND immersed in the hot water in photos because they are intended to show the pleasure of onsen and not pornography. :bluush:
This is not done in practice. (I must also tell you that many young Japanese don't know this rule, because Japanese today bathe privately at home and are not accustomed any longer to public bathhouses and onsen.)
Since you're a guy, I'm sure you'll get used to it...(hopefully :p )

Damicci,
I don't know where the reference to 1000 yen comes from, but Nagashima-san's recommendations are all all-you-can-eat places--they're all cheap. The more expensive all-you-can-eat restaurants serve high-quality foods you see in upscale places. I'm sure he gave the list because he thought you won't find regular Japanese servings not enough for you.
He also uses translation software to post in English. I find it very humorous and endearing! :emblaugh:

I think it is easier to travel when you don't have half of japan pushing its way into a subway train. It's not fun. especially when your 6'4" and this lil 5'2" school girl is under your elbow. I so though I was going to hit this poor girl if i slipped while the train was stopping.
Anyway Everytime I went to the coffee shop on the top floor of gamers it was closed.

Actually both. The bombings in London and Madrid happened during this times. I would want to avoid being on a train at those times. Also, it's hard to get yourself into the train. :relief: I'm not big, so chances are I'll be squished like a bug. What about on the afternoon/evening ?

The rush hour of afternoon is after 17:00.
But it is not crowded in the morning.
Because all work overtime.
A last train front is most crowded.
It is more severely [ than a morning ] crowded.
The most dangerous station is the Shinjuku station.
People gather every day from Chiba, Yokohama, the Tokyo suburbs.

Umm. So it would be better if I board a train before 1700. In case I'm late, would 2000 be okay then ? Or would most salarymen get off from overtime at that time ? :relief:
