Why are race queens so popularized in Japan? Seems like many models consider being chosen to be a race queen as their big career break. Many even go specially to audition for the parts.

It is my guess that it can be summed up in one word: exposure!

Some have gone on to become actresses (Miho Yoshioka is one, for example). It is pretty much like what it is in the United States. A woman makes a big splash as a model (or supermodel) and wham, the studios come knocking at her door. I think it is a smart move if their career goal is to get into acting.

Yeah, from their uniforms, exposure is right. ^_^

I don't know about Japan as a whole, but racequeens were one of my favorite things about being a racing driver! Here in the US and at many events in Europe, models either mark the driver's place on the grid or hold an umbrella over them to keep them out of the sun. Full-face helmets and Nomex are bloody hot in the summer....

Sometimes they're called gridgirls, or umbrella girls, but my favorite was grid mice. I still use that term! I thought it fitting because when the cars fire up, they scatter like mice!

Other countries have the grasped the concept, but Japan has it down pat.

By the way, this thread is nothing without pictures (hint hint!).

The photo is so large that it would use up bandwidth. So here's a link: http://clean.scanlover.com/showpic.php?id=2543&PHPSESSID=02caf88ac6b7f97ab0263dacf89a555e

What's the average lifespan of a race queen's career? There're one-year wonders, and there're those who keep going and going.

Here in the US we only have drag queens, no race ones?
