From an early age my interest in Japan came mainly from video games and technology. Blinded by the common miss-conception of Japan being a brightly-lit, smiling haven, where nothing bad ever happened. Something about the imagery, especially the pop art/culture, really captured my imagination. Everything seems so, well nice.

Then of course you have Aya. The girl I knew in college, who made me realise that I was seriously attracted to J-girls. She rejected me, but I was just smitten by how sweet and pretty she was. I began to notice this in other J-girls I saw in London as well.

In the back of my head though, there was this feeling that Japan my well be darker than I'd always imagined. Japanese sexuality is the main talking point in these forums, because it confuses us so much. I kept hearing of stories of US servicemen sleeping with loads of Japanese women, and all sorts of stories of teenage promiscuity and prostitution.

These stories made me angry. I felt that the US servicemen must have been corrupting the little angels, and that the teenage promiscuity thing might again have been forced on the girls. After all, they look so young and innocent. Even the girls you see in pornography.... It's something that a lot of western guys just dont understand. We assume that J-girls are sweet and moral BECAUSE OF THE WAY THEY LOOK.

Japanese girls up to the age of 30 genetically look young. They all have big eyes, round faces and are normally short in height and thin in frame. Not to mention the voices. It's this 'young' look that makes us sub-consiously assume that J-girls all act young. But really, there's no reason why Japanese women are any different from those in the UK. Some are sluts, some are relationship girls, some are vestal virgins. In fact, without the UK's natural intolerance to being sexually open-minded (myself included), the average Japanese girl is probably more adventurous than the average UK girl.

Sexuality is down to your personality, not your looks. We associate even a 23 year old J-girl as being like a child (even the older females we call egirlsf and not ewomenf), and we associate this youth with innocence. But none of these assumptions are anything other than observations of the natural physical form of ALL Japanese girls.

Finding out that many J-girls are promiscuous actually made me feel better. If they truly want whatever they get from their US Marines and middle-aged Japanese businessmen, that's cool. And I'm sure there's still a few nice girls knocking about with slightly higher moral scruples .

Another thing that interests me on this forum that interests me is "The Japanese think this...", "Japanese girls do this..." and such comments.

I don't understand why a country of probably 100 million people are always grouped together. Do all Americans think the same? Hell no. Some are born-again Christians in the Bible-Belt, and some are Detroit rude boys. Are they the same? Nope, theyfre at opposite ends of the entire human spectrum. Do they come from the same nation? Yes. Ok, the US is more genetically diverse than Japan, but it is our environment that shapes us more than our genetics.

The subject of rape is a common topic when discussing the darker side of Japan. Whether is be the small, but individually horrifying cases in Okinawa (and statistically these annual rape rates are not very high compared to those in the rest of Japan), or the de-sensitisation of rape through itfs light-hearted use in various cartoons and TV shows, it seems to be a very en vogue subject. Some of the comments made by various politicians and police chiefs in the country defy belief. And yet, a single tragic rape case in 1995 of a young girl led to massive riots in Okinawa. I wonft even mention China, and World War II.

I canft decide, given the fact Ifve never been, on my feeling on Japan. On one side you have nice pretty women, anime, technology, art, mountains and smiling people, and on the other side you have University rape clubs, WW2 disgraces, Police chiefs condoning rape, teenage uber-sluts, a detatched, jaded and depressed youth, and the high-possibility that many of the smiling people are merely doing it to hide their deep-rooted Western resentment.

Oh well, I guess Japan is a hub of miss-conceptions and contradictions. Nothing seems to add-up. I guess itfs difficult for us westerners to understand.

Wow, AWESOME post dude.

Took me 2 years of living in Japan to realise what you have without ever visiting.

Its not the sunshine and lollipops land many seem to imagine it as.

Gaijin (including US marines) living there aren't repsonsible for corrupting innocent little virgins. The girls know exactly what they want and many actively seek it out.

The dark sides of Japan can be DARK.

A few things though...

Alot of topics about Japan you can pick up and say "Japanese think this" "Japanese do this".. and on the whole it can be true to some extent, more so that you could in the UK or Australia. Its a homegeneous society.

Most of the women there do act out the whole youth thing a fair bit, but you get that here too, in both directions too (girls acting/dressing up to look older than they are). I know my girlfriend talks the way she talks because she thinks its "cute" (annoying is the word, in Japanese its fine, in english its not on, altho watching lots of Bridget Jones has made here speak a little more normal, bloody hell! :D).
