I want to buy a cellphone here that I can use with a local Canadian cell phone service.
Do you guys know what's available or what specs I need?

Yes -- none of them. The only phones that work outside of Japan are the Vodaphone and other ones made for people who travel abroad. Expect to pay upwards of 35 yen per minute, and pay your phone bill in Japan as well.

If these way kewl, more advanced phones would work in your country....don't you think somebody would already be marketing them there?
or they make laws against using them, ie porsche 959...

Its because Western and Eastern halfs of the telecommunication systems uses different technology. Japan and most of the Eastern countries use G3 networking systems. The U.S. uses a totally different network system.
Besides that, Tegic Communications was just awarded the Japanese T9 Text input software from the Japan Patent Office. I'd be expecting phones that can read and be typed in Japanese to come out some time in the next few years. Can't wait for that!

I suspect you'll have to go WAAAAAY out of your way to get this on a western phone in the next 5 years. What percentage of the Western world could make use of this? Like .1% at most. Even in this "international" day and age Windows XP has pretty awful multilingual support if you think about it. You have to pick one language as your base language.
