I started when I was 19. Strangely, it also seems like a long time ago now to me too.

I was thinking of starting to learn it this summer/next year.
Do you people think it's hard to learn japanese at ages 17+? =P

I started... when I was nineteen, I think. About one year ago from now. So it's quite doable to start learning Japanese after the age of 17 ^^

Definitely doable. You won't get the accent as well as if you started at age 12, but oh, well. I'd say the majority of gaijin JPN speakers started at the earliest, college.... often later.

Have been looking at it.... thinking about it ... on and off... for many years, but "took the plunge" and started studying 'for real' just a few months ago.

I'm sixty-one (dammit!) .... do you think I have time to learn any Kanji .... at all...?

Hopefully,

I started last year (21) :) If only my interest started earlier...would've saved me some years and I actually COULD SPEAK japanese when I went there :p

My college offered japanese lessons (there are alot of forigne students) but I only found out about off a person in my AS English language class, he encouraged me to do it and I probaly would not of done it otherwise.

When I was in High School, all we had was Spanish. pff!

But there was distant learning classes that you learn over a TV and phone line, but you need a stupid @$$ 3.4 grade point average to attend. I hated my school ever since they turned me down at the school board meeting. This is when I was learning German on my own. I proved them that you dont need a 3.4 gpa just to learn a language. Maybe they got mad.

Anyways. I started learning Japanese at the age of 20.
