Quick question on the use of 面白い: I sometimes have problems when I want to express in Japanese that something is funny. The reason is that I've heard both 面白い and おかしい mean "funny," but it seems that 面白い is used more for "amusing" and おかしい more for "strange." I'm never sure if my meaning is truly conveyed. Is there some more accurate word for what we sometimes express as "haha funny?"

You are correct in guessing that 面白い is used more for "amusing, funny" and おかしい can be "strange."
あの人は面白い人だ。He is a funny man. He is an interesting person.
あの人, ちょっとおかしいんじゃないの。He is a little weird, isn't he.
Also, 頭がおかしい means "crazy".

I have noticed one thing... Supposedly, the rule (original) says that you can not use the same word someone mentioned once. So you need to come up with a new word, no repeating the same one. ANYWAY...

My turn...

機動力 (きどうりょく) -- mobility

studyonline
Jul 4, 2005, 09:10
sorry for the confusion. I did not mean you repeated, Glenn. Few other people did that. I just wanted to say that it is one of the rules of the game. The purpose of that is to keep going with new words rather than repeat the same words to "cheat" and ruin the game, you see. But to do the game in this forum, it is hard to follow that rule. (I am sure no one has time to check all the words on all pages!)

機動力... goes well with your pic.

Takakoo
Sep 20, 2005, 11:02
Yes it does mean meal. Tabemono食べ物 means food, the mono物 making the verb taberu食べる into a concrete noun. I suppose it would be better just to say shoku食 by itself when talking about food rather than adding koto事 to make it an abstract noun, making it mean the abstract action of eating food (i.e. meal) rather than the food itself.

Thanks for correcting me on that one.
