hey Cyn, glad to see you made it to the jref forum! shiritori is a great way to build your vocab!

i just noticed on your last post you put "こんいち わ". just so you know for future references, it's actually "こんにちは". i made the same mistake at first. what happens is the romaji is written often "konichiwa" instead of "konnichiwa" or "kon'nichiwa". still, in the hiragana, "ha" is used instead of "wa", but the reason for this is that one is using the particle "wa," which is written with the hiragana character "ha". like in the example: watashi no namae wa biru desu. (my name is bill.) after "namae", "wa" appears, but in hiragana, it would appear as "ha". if one were to translate "konnichiwa" into english, it would mean literally "this day [topic marker particle]". actually, now that i look back, i think you put this in your signature, not just the post. anyway, yes, as someone stated before in this thread, you learn from your mistakes, and really that is the best way! you'll remember learning from mistakes a lot better than getting it right all the time! anyway, yes, good luck w/ your studies, and i look forward to seeing you around on the forum in the future! じゃ、また!

p.s. i just noticed another thing--the word for actress/actor is "yakusha" not "yakusho"--that's probably why you kept getting the wrong kanji... =D

Takakoo
Oct 19, 2005, 15:36
The particle "は" can be translated as "as for". Another particle yo might want to look out for is "へ", pronunced "e" when used as a particle.
To get こんいちは from my IME, I would type "konnnitiha" or "konnnichiha". You have to type the letter "n" twice to get "ん" and then "ni" to get に, meaning that there are three "n"s in a row. :relief:

The spelling is right, and I'm surprised at that one! First of all, this is the second time in two days that I've seen it, and second of all, it made its way into Japanese but most English speakers don't know what it is. Of course, it's borrowed into English from French (or is some alteration of a French word).

That would certainly make sense, what with Kumo having to go to a dialect to get a word. This being a casual game, and with the blessing of everyone else playing, I'll gladly edit.
It's okay with me if it's okay with everyone else!

Was just curious...:relief:

No worries! I just wasn't aware of the rules. I've never seen shiratori in Japan, only on English-based forums. We were always more interested in playing the Yamanote-sen game. :p

Not sure if this is a noun..

Without taking anything away from Kumo, since a word ending with ん is illegal, the new word will be:

留守 − るす
not at home

(let me know if this is okay...i'm not actually sure if rusu is a word by itself in japanese)
