2 more members will be graduating from Morning Musume this year.

Goto Maki and Yaguchi.

As many of you know, I'm not a mo-musume fan, but still interesting that Tsunku decide to make 2 of the girls leave the group.

The previous member (sorry forgot her name) graduated about 2 years ago and has been on and off doing solo acts or appearing on TV.

I wonder if Tsunku has something up his sleeve?

I just downloaded a video of the little ceremony thing. All the members looked so sad and were crying and making little speeches in Japanese. Except, I think it was Maki Goto and Kei Yasuda, not Maki Goto and Mari Yaguchi =/ I may be wrong. Maki Goto was definetly one of the most popular members of the group. I don't know how well Morning Musume will do after Maki's leaving. However, Tsunku probably has something up his sleeve like you mentioned. Maki is set to pursue her solo career. She has just released a brand new single called "IT'S EASY!". Good luck Maki! BTW, I think you just might be talking about Yuko Nakazawa as the member who graduated 2 years before. Not quite sure though. She was the oldest member of the group, and the leader when Morning Musume first debuted.

Okay. I've been researching around because I wanted to get to the bottom of this and find out the real info with all the rumors circulating. I found out that after a day of speculations, Tsunku finally has carried out an official notice. Tsunku says that with a Hello! Project of 44 members total, it was difficult to maintain in the market. Maki Goto left Morning Musume to follow a solo career within the Hello! Project. She will officially begin this the 23 of September, which is her birthday. Kei Yasuda left Morning Musume and she becomes the second to fully leave the Hello! Project next to Yuko Nakazawa. Kei will be dedicated to participate in TV dramas and musical comedies as of this spring. The 27 of September will be their goodbye concert (it's already been sold out). Mari Yaguchi left MiniMoni to form a new group. Apparently she was tired of the childish role she had to play, and annoyed by the immature behavior of Ai and Nono. Mika Todd will be the leader of the new Minimoni and Ai Takahashi will enter as well. Without Maki and Kei, Pucchimoni will consist of Hitomi, Ayaka (of Coconuts Musume) and Makoto. Mari, Kaori and Ai left Tanpopo. In their place will be Risa, Asami and Ayumi Shibata (from Melon Kinenbi). Finally, it seems to be that Heike Michiyo will graduate from the Hello! Project soon, to follow her solo career. For more information (in Japanese): http://morningmusume.dream.com/news/hellopro.html

I forgot to add that in my opinion with all these MAJOR changes to Hello! Project, Tsunku has to DEFINETLY have something up his sleeve. I'll be expecting more major changes and addtions soon..

ooops, my mistake. I was like a bit tired when I posted that.

It was another member.

sorry

Tsunku is producing something like 41 groups and 108 members including Ayumi Hamazaki and a few other non-musume acts.

Thanks for correcting me :)

I saw a video with them and the Iron Chef commentator doing cooking (I'm a pretty big Iron Chef fan too..) and was wondering what it was. I did a search for it and found CD's, etc....but this was a video, and I saw a few others listed but did not watch them. If anyone has heard of them, what is it? A band, TV show...?

Thanks

Thought your name looked familiar...for the record: I'm not looking to steal episodes, but FoodTV's two a week is so little (Even resorted to watching very good looking women cook in a non-kitchen stadium setting!!)

I guess it's unique-- who else goes around with an Armenian name. As I said, FujiTV sells some highlight tapes, but that's all I know. Which night haven't you been getting? Sunday? There have been marathons on Sunday lately. (Yes, I'll be quiet now)

I think I saw those along with books, but it doesn't show the full episode. I get both days (Friday and Saturday) but 2 episodes per 7 days isn't enough :)

I love the morning musumes,,,
"Musume" means "daughers" in japanese, right?
I possess most of their music by downloading MP3s.

They are the favorite ones in korea, too.
So cute!

Morning Musume is a money machine designed to bring back life in the minds of tired salarymen for other reasons than why they sing silly songs, that's for them to make money on albums, not on TV, by seducing Japanese kids.

Yeah, Tsunku does throw out loads of stuff by them and the Hello! Project but I don't care if it is a money making scheme I like :D

To everyone,

Just out of curiosity (I'm not trying to be patronizing in the least... seriously), but just how much of their lyrics do you understand?

Mandylion
May 30, 2003, 11:05
Far more than is probably healthy.

MuZ
May 30, 2003, 11:07
Well me personally I can't understand very much of the lyrics at all but I have read the translated lyrics for a few of their songs. :D

Mandylion
Good one!

Muz
And it doesn't make you want to retch? I personally can't abide Morning Musme. How many are there of them now? 12? More? I lost count... They couldn't sing for naught individually (as all the "graduates" of the group have proved until now, having all slipped back into anonymity) and they are ubnoxiously everywhere . Their first few hits were catchy and could be thought cute if you kept in mind that they'd be gone in 6 months, but, to me, it got old really, really fast.

MuZ
May 30, 2003, 11:30
I honestly like their songs :)

There are 15 members now.

tasuki
May 30, 2003, 11:37
Even though you don't get the lyrics? (Don't take this the wrong way, I'm not trying to be patronizing in any way). Reminds me of me before I came here... I used to flip for Hayashibara Megumi songs... Now, I prefer Oda Kazumasa, Spitz, or even Chage and Aska. The lyrics have a bit more depth. Anyway, to each his/her own, eh? I was just curious.

MuZ
May 30, 2003, 11:44

tasuki
May 30, 2003, 11:49
Mine confused quite a few people as well. They could not understand how I could like the stuff on sound alone... I trried to make them understand that it's the same as when you listen to an opera in Italian and you don't get Italian... It's funny how many of my friends couldn't bridge the gap between the two, the musical styles being so different...

I believe there are 15 at the moment. Can't name them though.
There was 5, then 8, then 13, and the last I heard it had climbed to 15.
And I believe the ages range from 13 through to 21 or there abouts.

Dec 21, 2003, 16:21
i liked it better when there were 13 ppl in morning musume. 15's such a bad number. what i want to know is why do they keep changing the band members?!? im sure ppl would cope if the girls grew older and their ages ranged from 17-25 instead of 13-21. its not as if they can keep replacing them and replacing them and still keep them popular for another 100 years - or can they...

Some of them "graduate" and move on and make their own groups or go solo, so they bring in new people. Think of it like a progressive pop group ;)

Morning Musume are a cheap copy of Onyanko Club. Just about everything was copied: multiple rotating membership; splinter groups; TV show; even the token half-Japanese girl. It's been done before, only bigger and better. Onyanko Club had no less than 19 members at any given time and had a total of 50 members. Been there, done that.

You can like whatever you want to. You can like cheap copies if you want. Whatever floats your boat. I'm just pointing out to all the come-latelys that it's been done before since most come-latelys don't seem to know anything past 4 years ago. I get tired of people who have only gotten into J-pop for the past few years and think they know all about it. Reminds of a line from a Rolling Stones song:

I sit and watch the children play
Doing things I used to do
They think are new

Such as? Let's hear some examples. I pointed out just a few (albeit very significant) things that MM have copied from Onyanko Club. They even copied the "graduation" thing. Ptooey! The only thing Onyanko didn't have is the pedophilia factor. 12 year old MM members???!! Defend that.

The prosecution rests.

First of all, even if MM "copy" certain characteristics of Onyanko, why is that bad? Virtually every musical act, artist, or singer derives his, her or its style from someone else. Who can claim to be truly original?

"Pedophilia" is pretty strong, IMO. I can only speak for myself but I enjoy listening to MM music and watching MM videos but I don't find them sexually arousing. If you don't like MM, that's fine. To each his own. But what distinguishes them for most fans is their music, which is the best JPOP has to offer.

(How was that for a first post?) ;-)

Did I say anything about musical style? No, I was talking about number of members, group arrangement, splinter groups, and the TV show. NOT their musical style.

I also mentioned that people can like what they want to, but I guess you read only what you want to read.

It would help if you READ and UNDERSTOOD what I posted before commenting.

And let's see, 12 year old girls shaking their butts in front of the cameras - I stand by my pedophilia remark. You might not find them sexually arousing but I have heard others remark so. The prosecution still stands.

And as for Morning Musume being the "best" that JPop can offer - a lot of people will argue with you to the death on that point.

Your first post leaves a lot to be desired. Lots of holes and off-base. Try again kid.

I know what you were talking about. I just don't think the fact that they copied something detracts from their music, whether it's style, costumes, number of members, graduations, etc.

Since I don't know all the MM fans in the world, I can't say if you're right or wrong on this one. My guess is that most of their fans aren't pedophiles.

You'll get different answers from different people. My favorites fast songs are: "Koko ni iruzee" and "Renai Revolution 21". For slower songs, try "I Wish" "Do It Now" or "Morning Coffee" (an oldie but goodie). Better yet, just buy a "best of" album and you can get most of the singles on one disc.

Ok genius, name one Japanese pop group that had the same formula as Onyanko Club before them. I'm talking about Morning Musume and Onyanko Club here, not "every group, singer, etc." It's been a month since I asked the question and still nobody has named anything "new and creative" that MM has done. The fact remains that Morning Musume copied the Onyanko Club formula and you come-latelys are too ignorant to know the difference. Yeah, I can call you a come-lately because I've been listening to Japanese Pop for over 20 years, probably longer than you've been alive. And SEEN more live Japanese pop concerts than you have (in Japan, not Puffy live in the US).

Yes, I've actually heard self-proclaimed Morning Musume fans describing in graphic detail what they would do sexually to the younger MM members. These are people with homemade MM shirts, carrying MM CDs and won't shut-up about them. They may not have pedophilic experience but certainly have the thoughts. I never said anything about them being actual pedophiles. READ and UNDERSTAND my posts dammit!

There are Ayu and Hikki fans that would argue with you that their idols are the best that JPop has to offer and not MM. As I said before (but can't get into your thick head) is that people can like whatever they want. There, I said it for the THIRD TIME!

And this is a public forum, we're here to discuss and yes - ARGUE! Your debating skills have a long way to go and your statements would have more credibility if your grammar and spelling skills were at least decent. This is a discussion forum, not text messaging.

I'm not going to agree or argue with you about the MM/Onyanko similarities, primarily because I've never heard of Onyanko before seeing them referred to in your posts (call me a "come-lately" if you will). Even if what you are saying is right, I would answer it with a big "SO WHAT?"

Copies aren't bad just because they're copies.

Look at The Monkees. They were designed to be American copies of The Beatles. That doesn't mean there's nothing to like about The Monkees. They had some good songs and personalities and developed their own fan base. It's not fair to call their fans "ignorant" just because they liked a group that was modeled after The Beatles.

If you only like music that's "new and creative," I guess you're not a Hikki or an Ayu fan either, since you can hear music just like theirs on any American radio station. Most people, though, don't decide how much they like something on how "new and creative" it is. They just go by what sounds (and, in the video age, looks) good.

It's not that we don't know the difference. We just don't know the Onyanko Club. One thing is that MM is lasting longer than OC did, and it is still here now. MM graduates such as Natsumi Abe, who's been with MM for the last six years, touched the hearts of many, even to fans less than for half a year. You can like your old and past things, like Elvis or whatever, when you weren't that old (that's for calling us ignorant), and we'll like ours, while it's here, original or not. Then later when we're old, we can bother the next third generation about how great our old artists were while they don't give a rat about what we say. :)

Oh yeah, and MM rules. Maki rules! :D

That was my whole point. I didn't say they were bad, just that they're not original. Do you get it now? You're a JPop fan and you've never heard of Onyanko Club? Look up "ignorant" again.

Hmmm... more ignorance. The fans were ignorant because the Monkees did not play their own instruments! They were syncing to recordings made by studio musicians. The Beatles, on the other hand played their own instruments and wrote their own songs. Although, to give credit where it's due, Michael Nesmith did write Linda Ronstadt's (you've heard of her, right?) first single "Different Drum."

If you only like music that's "new and creative," I guess you're not a Hikki or an Ayu fan either, since you can hear music just like theirs on any American radio station. Most people, though, don't decide how much they like something on how "new and creative" it is. They just go by what sounds (and, in the video age, looks) good.

Now, where did you get the impression that I only liked music that was "new and creative"? Did I say that? Your lack of comprehension amazes me. You're right about one thing though, I'm not a fan of Ayu or Hikki. Their voices annoy me.

Now stop embarassing yourself. Quit while you're behind.

Onyanko Club are Japanese icons, like Seiko and Akina. Morning Musume's 15 minutes are just about over. Then they'll be forgotten just like Max (remember them?).

Wow, now you probably feel much better about yourself trying to put me down in turn, right ("ethugging" me back?)? Did I every in any way try ever to present myself as wanting to be Japanese? You also assume too much.

I replied to the posts towards me point for point and pointed out what people misunderstood about my posts. It's not my fault that some people here can't seem to understand simple English.

And by the way, you should never refer to yourself in the honoriffic "san" - it's considered rude and arrogant. It's something people learn in their first week of Japanese class. Ignorance again...

Ok I've calmed down. And you're actually right, some of what I've said was uncalled for. Apologies to you, Hayashi and Meiji. Again, no one cares. I live in America, I speak English, I dont give a f*** whats considered rude in Japan, you arent Japanese so neither should you. As for my earlier claims, you are arguing about something that doesn't matter. Your putting all this energy into arguing about "jpop" an industry that isnt even native to your country when you should be worrying about other things like attaining a social life.

mostly they only gather all of them for few songs. Also keep in mind that sometimes they leave MM or gets fired (like Ai Kago and Mari Yaguchi.... Damned!)

Most commonly the members of MM is divided into small subgroups who works for the Hello! Projects (H!P). And there is a lot of those groups each with their only silly name.

I'm older than most MM fans and I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I like them. They're kind of what I'd have to call a "guilty pleasure." Yeah, they are cute, but if that's all they were I wouldn't bother buying the CDs, I'd just download the photos. Plus, there are loads of cute JPOP singers out there whose music I don't buy because I don't like their music.

MM was one of the first groups I listened to when I discovered JPOP a few years ago. I find that the music is very upbeat and great "feel good" music. It's great music to listen to early in the morning when you're trying to wake up.

Here's a funny story. A couple years ago, I was in Japan with my wife and we were talking to some people we had just met at lunch and one of the guys says he likes Japanese music and my wife blurts out that I listen to MM. I could have crawled under the table. Later, I explained to her that "outting" me as a MM fan was a little like telling everyone I listened to Britney Spears (which I don't... well, except for that one song).

Well men who listen to morning musume are WOTAS. And they are like Otaku's.

Seems like a grave generalization in my opinion.

Yes, it's true there are the perverts out there that go there cause they want the girls but there are a good amount of normal people at Morning Musume and Hello! Project concerts. They just aren't the ones getting the attention.

I'm male, and yes, I like a good amount of the girls in H!P but the main attraction has ALWAYS been Tsunku's amazing pop creations. And many people lose sight of that.

The girls are hardworking and people reacting to how many there are obviously haven't seen Onyanko Club or Bishoujo Club 31 (the former at one point had over 50 members, Hello! Project as a whole, not including the Eggs, doesn't even make 50.)

It's a lot like Evangelicalists. The crazy ones are what is shown to people as they're the ones that grab the most attention but there are certainly evangelicalists that live on moderation.

I'm crazy for Morning Musume but I don't think I'm particularly creepy about it. And anyways, I'm 18. Most of the girls are my age or older.

i love it... i love the whole cheese factore...

but i didn't know Tsunku produced/ managed (?) Amyumi Hamasaki... does he still? GOD he must be loaded... @.@

I first saw morning musume on the very bizaar Mechaike Bakajo Kimatsu Test - although I had no idea who they were for sometime after until I was recounting the tale to a Japanese friend.

One thing that struck me was how much the girls get paid??? I can see that there must be a lot of money coming in, but as the producer probably takes off most of this and the fact there are so many girls in the group, that can't leave much to go around???

hayashi
Jan 18, 2007, 08:21
Amos, they get paid plenty. They don't all get paid the same, but I think 40 million yen ($300,000 or so U.S.) each on average is in the ballpark. It's not Hamasaki money but it pays the rent.

I have to say that i mostly like Morning Musume for their earlier music, although there's a few more recent songs of theirs that i like. I also preferred the look and youthful yet more mature look of the earlier generations- i think at times Hello milked the Morning Musume brand too much as time went by and this IMHO decreased the quality of some of their songs even though the large majority of songs kept on making it to 1, 2 or 2 in the charts etc.
Anyhoo i haven't listened to some of their recent stuff so i'm gonna right now, but here's some of my fav old school Morning Musume songs for now;

The song that created Morning Musume (Ai no Tane);

Morning Coffee;

Summer Night Town;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cv0YSUHe4Oo&NR=1

Love Machine;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwacTv-6DK4

And "Joshi Kashimashi Monogatari" (meaning 'The Story of Noisy Girls');

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0aKBuEt-xj4

("Joshi Kashimashi Monogatari" is unique in comparison to other MM songs in that each girl sings a little about her own personality/character)

And so much more  .
My taste in Japanese varies a lot, i like everything from Capsule (mostly their music contains elements of bossa nova, lounge, breakbeat, and most recently electronica), to RIP Slyme (Japanese hip hop), Yoshida Brothers (shamisen music) etc- Morning Musume is just another of my fav bands/groups, i like their music because i often find it uplifting and catchy :) .

I found Joshi kashimashi monogatari whilst surfing Youtube recently. Catchy little number that sticks in your brain.
