The students in the Internationale Baccalaureate (IB) program at my school are making a t-shirt with the theme, "Think Globally, Act Locally." If you're not familiar with the phrase, it's about encouraging people to think about the global environmental situation and then take action in their local communities, based on the premise that a large amount of individual action could, over time, make a difference on a massive scale and encourage even more people to place more emphasis on the environment. (This, it is hoped, would then get more governments, corporations, and other large entities involved which could help promote environmentally-friendly laws, policies, business practices, etc.)

Anyway, the back of the t-shirt includes a graphic of the IB hexagon with a picture of the world inside of it and we want to translate, "Think Globally, Act Locally" into a bunch of different languages and have them printed on the back of the shirt with the globe.

I was asked to translate it into Japanese, but I'm pretty sure I don't have it right...and I definitely don't want it to be wrong! Here's what I have:

ちきゅうかんきょうで おもいをいたす, ちかくに はたらく.

or ちきゅうかんきょうで おもいをいたす, ちかくに はたらきましょう

What do you think? Am I even close?

I don't know if we'll use kana or kanji for the shirt (it may depend on the length of the text), so it would be great if I could get both a kana and kanji translation.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello Dan!

The slogan is already very well known among environmental activists in Japan and has already been translated. Although there are slight differences by group or organization, the standard form is this:

地球規模で考え、地域で行動する
(chikyuu-kibo de kangae, chiiki de koudou suru)

Hope it helps! :-)
