Quick question about tenses

I've just got a quick question about using ている、ていた。

I was trying to think of the best way to say something like, "I homestayed in Japan for 6 months." Although in English we simply use the perfect past tense, I have a hunch that in Japanese I should say something like:

日本に６ヶ月間ホームステイをしていました。

I guess it seems that in English, the feeling of continuous action is just implied, but maybe in Japanese it's better to be more explicit (since a continual form exists)? I dunno.

I know it seems really basic...and I've been studying Japanese for a while...but I guess I never addressed this problem head-on.

I think 〜ている Is normally used in casual form. Seems to be used when stating something that is already being done or started.
何時君は仕事をしますか。　When will you do the work?
あ、私は仕事をしているよ。 Oh, I am already doing it now!

I think you can also just drop the い.
友達は何をしてる？　- What is your friend doing?
彼は食べてる。 - He is eating.

~ていた　I think you can just use ~た
出来たーI've done it.
決まった - I've decided.

I think your example is fine. There is more fun to be had with this tense. To generally say "I'm married" you'd say 結婚している. Literally "I am being married" I believe. That one took me a while.

I am eating. 私は食べている。
I am running now. 今、私は走っている。
I have been doing the homestay to Japan for 6 months. 私は日本に６ヶ月間ホームステイをしている。


ex)〜していた
I was eating. 私は食べていた。
I ran yesterday. 昨日、私は走っていた。
I had been doing the homestay to Japan for 6 months. 私は日本に６ヶ月間ホームステイをしていた。


"〜している" when homestay continues now.
　ホームステイが今も続いている場合には「〜している」

ex)私は半年間（の予定で）ホームステイしています。とても楽しいです。良い思い出を 作りたいです。


"〜していた" when homestay ends.
　ホームステイが終わっている場合には「〜していた」。

ex)私は半年間ホームステイしていました。とても楽しかったです。良い思 い出になりました。
