Well, what do you think about them? Any other fans here? I dont see too many topics on them, and I think thats a shame. They were definately trailblazers in their time.

I agree. I was actually living in Japan at the time when Hide killed himself. Very sad... I still listen to their music to this day.

You don't see many topics because they're long gone. Sure, there's still fans but not like there would be if they were still releasing stuff. Yoshiki has gone on, and is now Mr. Michael Jackson Japan.
Toshi is a cult guy. Pata is playing with Miyavi. hide is dead. Heath is... I don't know where Heath is. Point is, everyone has gone pretty much down the drain. X Japan was indeed a good group... but as I said, there isn't rabid fandom because it's old. Everyone's done with their rabid fandom of X Japan, hence the lack of topicness anywhere.

My post seems to lack a point.

Thats the problem. Fandom.

You still see people getting juiced about Led Zepplin. Rush. Black Sabbath.

X-Japan is right up there with them.

So I'm going to continue to boast this great band. X-Japan are number 1. No question, 'old' or not.

X Japan will never get old! They influenced so many people and I wish they would have been popular in America so more people would see how amazing they were. I love X Japan. And hide. hide will never ever ever really die unless we forget him, along with X.

x japan is good. very good, actually, and even much more than that.. but they're gone, as said. people surely like them and love them still, but there's nothing new to talk about. well, if you want to talk about them, you 'old' fans (i've known about them only about two years now, sadly) maybe should make some kind of memories topic and try to talk about those old x things which were fun or great. i don't know.. but what i tried to say, there are fans of x. they haven't gone anywhere :)

"well, if you want to talk about them, you 'old' fans (i've known about them only about two years now, sadly) maybe should make some kind of memories topic and try to talk about those old x things which were fun or great"

And here I thought that was the point of THIS thread... Truly great music stands the test of time. X was ahead of their time imho and one of a few J-bands to really make an indelible impact on myself. Just because the group no longer is around doesn't mean they and their body of work aren't worth discussing.

I wonder if so many "fans" of Gackt, Hyde, and the like will be able to say the same thing five or ten years down the road from now about their music... I suspect many of the bandwagoners though will simply move on to fawn over whoever the flavor-of-the-month is at that point in time. Too many fans of J-music tend to focus on the here and now (what's "hot") it seems, but sometimes it's good to revisit the roots that laid the foundation for everything else to further one's own appreciation for great music. Alas, such is the way of "popular music" I suppose...

p.s. I saw X in concert twice during the late 90's so I guess that makes me an "old-timer" being nostalgic and reminiscing down memory lane. 8-p

IronChef, you've been reading my mind...

Speaking of 'old-timers', have you seen Saber Tiger in any lives before?

And speaking of bandwagoner fans, this is one thing about the scene that is lacking; the mainstay of classic music.

X-Japan will forever be wonderful, because their music WILL stand the test of time. I personally dont think too many bands out there make music that will have that longlasting effect.

Again; thats the norm for popular music, as you said before.

Funny, I'm listening to The Last Song by X Japan. I've always wished to see them, I think they were an awesome band, very musically talented and I always want to cry when I hear Endless rain. I saw a few of thier DVD's when Shin-Kun (exchange buddy) came to Canada, he was made fun of by the other guys cause he liked X Japan.....
Anywhodalady, I love em! :-)

Interesting thread. You don't see many topics because they're long gone. I've found most X-Japan or hide threads to be inundated with off topic posts and never really allowed to develop into anything but a debate about its relevance. Yoshiki projects; Violet UK & GLOBE (no longer involved), Heath & Pata joint project; Dope HEADZ (on hiatus), Heath project; Y2K, Pata project; Ra:IN, Taiji projects; Oto Kaze and Taiji & Family.
X may be gone but the members are still producing music "well, if you want to talk about them, you 'old' fans (i've known about them only about two years now, sadly)... and X still is attracting new fans. If the criteria for an 'old timers' thread is disbandment then cali=gari and Malice Mizer fit the profile.

He has the Michael Jackson-esque look. When I think of Micheal Jackson and Jrock. Gackt comes to mind.

I think the influence they have on bringing new fans into Jrock music can't be under estimated. A great band, well worth discussing.

Actually, it was both Pata and Heath that were in Dope Headz... The project has ended though.

Last i heard was that Pata was in a band called Ra:in. The name stands for Rock and Inspiration. Link: http://www.rain-web.com/

Heath is now in a band called... Heath (no really!). It's a fourpiece band and Heath is (naturally) the bassist of that band.

Toshi is still in that sect. There was a story going round last year that he was being accused of child abuse. Never heard the end of that though.

Toshi is still in that sect. There was a story going round last year that he was being accused of child abuse. Never heard the end of that though.

I found out from my Japanese penpal that what happened was Toshi owned (or was the manager - she was unclear on that part) of some sort of daycare/orphange. One of his employees was abusing a little boy but somehow, Toshi got blamed for it. The charges against him were dropped, so she said.

Poor man needs to leave the cult.

I've been a fan of XJAPAN for 3 years now and I really like most of their songs and everything, although I wouldn't call myself a fanatic of xjapan.
as you probably know.they disbanded in 1997 ,in the year of 1998,the guitarist Matsumoto hide Hideto died under weird circumstances and not a long ago I heard about Toshi being involved in some weird cult called Masaya and he was even jailed.So..what i wanted to say is that..while i was talking to a japanese guy about xjapan,he said "please change the topic" and i felt like xjapan did something bad to him or something i was pretty confused so...since I usually like talking about xjapan and jrock he stopped chatting with me although we chatted for about a year.
does xjapan or band members have so bad reputation in japan or what?
i'd like the japanese to answer me this question.
when i was in japan, i heard some news on toshi from xjapan and people around me were like "oh how weird and crazy he is".
Yoshiki is pretty popular in Japan i guess but..seems toshi ruined the reputation of xjapan..from what i hear from the japanese.-

thanks for reading.

X is a sad subject for alot of people. I mean (for alot of the people in here) how would you feel if a band like L'Arc or Diru broke up and then one of the mambers died? what would you do if Gackt died? It hurts alot of serious fans to talk about things like that...

I am especially sad to know that had Hide not died a new X would be present today or so the plan was in the making. they (Yoshiki and Hide) wanted to bring X back with a different vocalist around the year 2000. If those fans whom killed themselves were any strong fans they would have lived to carry on hide's music and memory , but they chose the easy way to end it.

I don't think it makes you any better fan if you hurt yourself for your J-rocker baby. I think it would only make him , and you , look stupid.

It sounds a lot like it could be an early X song. There's a woman and Toshi (presumably) singing together at one point.

Negative, that's NOT an X Japan song.

Also there is another one, but I don't remember the name of it, you can easily find this songs in WinMx, but definitely they are not from X.

Scars belongs to X, as anchyyy said, DeG made a cover of it.

Any other question about X feel free to ask!

Kinda scary how long it's been since somebody posted in here. :souka: Then again X hasn't been getting much love on the net lately.
I've only recently fallen in love with X. Within about the past three days I became a fanatic. I got Tofu's Best of X (Japan) DVD and well...that was that as they say.
I watched their last Live day-before-yesterday and ever since then I keep spontaneously crying. I'll just be minding my own beeswax and then suddenly "Endless Rain" will begin to play in my head and I start crying like a baby. I don't think I've ever been this moved by a Live before.
I will admit, I didn't like X (Japan) for quite awhile but I think that's because I simply heard the "wrong song" first. I used to wonder if maybe there was something wrong with me 'cause I didn't like them and yet all these people and all these J-Rockers who I respect just simply gush over them. I felt kinda bad 'cause I couldn't see in them what everyone else apparently thought was obvious. Then I heard "Weekend" Live and I remember thinking, "Okay, I think I get it now." But I still wasn't obsessed with them and I just kinda sorta liked them. Then I decided to get this DVD in order to, "pay my respects to the band" and I was completely blown away. I finally get it and it does seem obvious now that I'm on the other side of it. I love X (Japan) and I now know that they truly are the legends they're made out to be.

P.S. We all miss you, Hide-san! :( "Dry your tears with love" And we also love you! Forever!

OMG I was so surprised to see this thread in the first page!! Im glad it is!!! I really love XJapan they were the very first J-Rockers I started loving, and the first ones I listened to. In my case I think I did listen to the correct songs (Forever love, Tears and Endless rain) those songs can really bring me to tears everytime I listen to them.

I feel sometimes kinda sad, because X-Japan is a legend, at least for me, they have a very special place in my heart. And they kinda made a difference in my musical tastes. (what was my point?? oh yeah) I feel sad because some ppl have forgotten about them; I know there arent any news or new stuff to discuss but they really deserve to be always remember because as long as their music is still listened X will always exist. Same goes to hide san, he wont be gone unless we forget him. And at least I wont!!! There are always good memories to discuss neh?

Hyde_is_my_anti-drug-> Im glad you discovered the beauty of their music! sometimes (as you said) you listen to the wrong song, but now you know why they are so special for many ppl!!!

wow that was long hehe (and kinda random):relief:

Edit:
OMG Forever love just started playing in my computer GOSH that song is beautiful :(

Ugh, tell me about it, I had to go through like 8 pages to find this thread. We must never forget X (Japan)! :box:
And wish me luck, I am beginning operation Get Girlfriend to Love X. She doesn't really like them AT ALL and I can tell she thinks I'm a bit crazy for suddenly loving them so much. But I'm spending the weekend with her and I'll be forcing X down her throat the whole time! Actually, "forcing" is the wrong word since I think I have at least peeked her interest as to what could turn me, Little Miss Tough Critic, into an X (Japan) Otaku out of the friggin blue. So I know she at least wants to hear more of them but I also know she's going to be extra hard on them. I'm really nervous 'cause I don't know what to play or show her first. :worried: I'm either going to show her the PV to "Weekend" first because that is my favorite X PV thus far and the one that got me completely hooked or maybe the PV to "Silent Jealousy" 'cause it's brilliant and my second favorite song by them. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO!!! :( I want her to love them so bad! *sniffles*

Yeah we should never forget about them

UUUUUU yeah she should love them too heheh... I dont know I absolutley love weekend PV and the song too so that might be a good begining. If she likes love songs Crucify My Love can be an option too, I think, and the PV is very nice too.

Oh and dont forget about Forever Love and Tears. Both songs and PVs are pretty good neh!

mmmm....I cant really think of another song since I love all :worried: hehe but oh Dahlia is a very good song too. Anyways good luck convincing your gf to love X as much as we do LOL

Oh wow an X Japan thread. I knew it had to be in here somewhere. Though i'm not a giant fan I do like some of their stuff. Endless Rain and Tears are a given LoL.

And plus, hide discovered Luna Sea and I love Luna Sea. Yoshiki also produced some Dir En Grey stuff. With the impact they had on the JRock scene I think they deserve some respect and remberance. And that reminds me, where's the Luna Sea thread lol.

X Japan might not be as popular now, lets face it they became history 9 years ago, but they'll forever be in my heart and play a special role that no other bands/musicians can take. X Japan changed my life in many many ways, and to me, they'll always, always be "the band".

lol, i agree, where's the Luna Sea thread? Luna Sea had as much influence as X Japan did, and they're certainly awesome in their own ways.

Ahh X Japan... i'll never forget them. It was my first Jrock band and it's my favourite also :-)

I am beginning operation Get Girlfriend to Love X.

Sounds familiar :D I tried to get one friend to love X Japan, but she just couldn't stand the fact that they are singing in japanese :okashii: She is so stupid, she doesn't know what she is missing by not listening jrock :box: And another reason why she doesn't want to listen them... She fears that if people would find out about that, she would lose all her friends and people would call her a freak and such :okashii: I told her that she should listen what she want, no matter what others say, but she won't listen to me :souka:

If music is the universal language, why does it have to be in English?
People care too much about what others think of them. If your friends are going to abandon you 'cause of the music you listen to then they aren't really friends anyway and you shouldn't care what they think.

I really love X (Japan). We owe them so much. They took back their country musically (did you know NO JAPANESE BAND had ever filled Tokyo Dome until X??? That is sad) and they pioneered almost everything that makes J-Rock great. I love them pieces and I wish the whole world did too.

Anchyyy

well visual wise X wasn't really the beginning of it all, there were buck tick and Saikima, but in terms of success X certainly is at the top. sometimes the number of records sold don't tell the story (X's record sales isn't very high, as a fact), but what an influence they have had on the rock scene and people in japan since the early 90s.

Hyde_is_my_anti-drug

Just about every J-Rocker says at some point how much they love X (Japan) and that's saying something. Even if fans of J-Rock don't respect/like them it's still a profound statement to their greatest that so many great artists love them. That's the main reason I kept giving them second chances 'cause so many artists that I love and respect were always gushing over them. They really were something special, ne?

Yea. I suppose alot of people don't realize that their favorite JRockers might have actually been influenced/inspired by X Japan.

As for me, I started listening to their stuff after reading about how much respect they get from other artists and fans. It made me want to see what it was all about. They're a great band.

Hyde_is_my_anti-drug
Jun 2, 2006, 21:16
They are great. :haihai:
And when I listen to them sometimes I'll hear something in a song and think, "That kinda sounds like L'Arc~en~Ciel" or "That sounds like Malice Mizer/Moi Dix Mois" You can really hear where these sounds that we're so used to hearing in more contemporary bands got their start in X (Japan). Again, love 'em or hate 'em you gotta respect 'em.

Hmmm ... since the X thread seems to be getting a lot of attention lately, I guess I can come in here and declare my undying love for all things X-Japan. They are one of the most important (and often underrated by the West) rock bands in the history of the art form. X-Japan wasn't just a music group, a "band", they were a force, serious musicians brought together to make some of the most amazing and classic rock collections ever composed.

I will forever love X

...and that is all

I love X!! I've never heard a band with such power and sentiment. Their passion overpassed anyone by far. Yoshiki has a beautiful piano playing and a super hot drumming. I loved Toshi's voice back then and I went mad with every guitar solo. I wasn't much of hide's personal fan,I actually more X's fan, as a whole.

I'm making X famous in my town!! SO far, i've already catched eight victims,,, C'mon!! It's impossible not to love them. And quite easy to find their lyric translation... tho.. who really cares? The music itselfs floods you as soon as it starts.. Love Unfinished, Forever Love, Silent jealousy and Rose of Pain..

I don't remember much of their story, but I had a bf that was INLOVE with them, so i got their discography and the Dahlia tour Final concert for freeeee... :p I must stop taking advantage of innocet guys...

Hyde_is_my_anti-drug
Jun 8, 2006, 21:02
Well, make 'em watch their last concert if style's an issue. They don't look nearly as 80s there. I personally LOVE all of X (Japan)'s looks whether it's hair that looks like aliens beamed down and nested on their heads or straight chin-length hair with leather. I think they rocked the 80s look though, a lot of bands just don't look right when shooting for that style but it just seemed natural on X. I actually don't notice how insane their hair was anymore until someone who hasn't seen them before goes all "AAAAGGHHH!!! HAIR BAND!!!" over it. I personally refuse to call them a hair band because it implies something rather nasty. People think hair band = posers with no talent but frizzing hair. And that sucks. And that's not X. And I am rambling, sorry. Shutting up.

Yeah, Yoshiki's making fast work of what's left of my nine lives. I really respect him for what he did though, 'cause (and correct me if I'm wrong) X came out on the tail end of all that sexual up-tightness that plagued Japan for awhile. So it was really a shock to see someone like Yoshiki expressing sexuality like that and so openingly. On Tofu Records they say X (Japan) was like having 5 Madonnas on stage at once and it's really quite true. One must respect them for opening so many doors and not just purely in the musical arena.

Lady Blue
Jun 11, 2006, 04:03
There are plenty of things X should be thanks for, but for some reason japanese people are not very comfortable talking about it; like they did something bad or else...

Jun 13, 2006, 00:46
is it all bands that change over time...i mean a lot of bands were visual but a lot changed into a more 'mature' look so to speak....do u guys think vk is dying off ;(

Hyde_is_my_anti-drug
Jun 13, 2006, 01:41
No, I don't think it is. As long as we have Mana we have Visual Kei. :-) Besides, Visual Kei's always faded in and out depending on what's considered the "in" thing to do but it's yet to actually die.
A lot of bands use Visual Kei to get attention and then drop it once they're signed, it's a cheap-@$$ but popular thing to do. It's not that Visual Kei's on the outs it's that a lot of bands are simply selling out (and I DON'T mean Dir en grey etc).
I think X (Japan) always was Visual Kei, just near the end they were a different branch.

Lady Blue
Jun 13, 2006, 08:25
A japanese contact told me VK is dying in Jp because there are now many "fans of the face" and "bands of face". He said that that kind of behaviour just takes away credibility and seriousness to the bissness and that now is like being visual is just to stand up on the stage and look pretty. Like some-many-most female visual bands now. Of course, there's always original visuals like Diru, but haven't you notice how many bands are there that wouldn't match'em for nothing? He also said something about the scene of Visual being changed and everything, including X members change of looks and the arising popularity of the L'arc and Pierrot visuals, less overloaded but still kinda girly...

Hyde_is_my_anti-drug
Jun 13, 2006, 20:40
Laruku isn't Visual and completely denies that they ever were. Pierrot...don't get me started on Pierrot. Like I said, many bands are now simply using Visual Kei as a marketing ploy and it sucks major monkey butt. It's hard to find actual Visual Kei anymore, true, but I don't think it's dying, simply in an "out" phase. In about five years another Mana will come along and bring it back to "in" status. And like I said, we still have our current Mana which means Visual Kei isn't completely lost quite yet.

Anchyyy

the rumors are FLYING about them appearing at Otakon, but I suppose we'll just have to wait for an "official announcement" from the Otakon staff regarding who the secret guest will be. If you don't know what I'm talking about check here http://www.jref.com/forum/showthread.php?t=24337

Hair style?? you don't need more than 15 minutes to get that hair, I want to see how much time they needed to get that hair, considering that Yoshiki used to be a "punk fan" (I still don't know why Death Side, Tetsuarey and Lipcream worked with him...)

Visual is dying?? phew, it has been dying for 6 years, I can say it's dead, because of the 1'000,000 bands that did not have a unique style.

By the way, I have pictures where you can consider L'arc en Ciel a visual band.

someday I'm gonna be older than you
I've never thought beyond that time
I've never imagined the pictures of that life
for now I will try to live for you and for me
I will try to live with love, with dreams
and forever with Tears

hmm....hide's band is SAVER TIGER if i'm correct, and it should be disbanded long ago. this SABER TIGER is another band. i double checked the memebers name in sberkids.com and i can't find hide's name, i think they're 2 seperate bands.

In his late teens, hide led the controversial indie act Saver Tiger (not to be confused with Saber Tiger; in the Japanese phonetic language, the v and b are interchangeable. Saber Tiger is a different band that is still active in the Japanese HM scene)

indeed your right

Yup, Saver Tiger disbanded just after hide left them (1987) and then they made an special secret reunion in 1993... after that, just nothing. Wait, they released the "Origin of hide" stuff after he died.

After they disbanded, some Saver Tiger dudes moved "full time" to D'erlanger, and they disbanded too, hahaha.

anything they did was simply beautiful. not because it was simple, but because there is no other word for it.

i wish there was a word for what X was [gah past tence] for what X ...IS..but there is not. so we just have to listen to their songs to find the words

[end being all serious]
plus the fact that they rock, and hideto matsumoto and yoshiki doing anything makes me completely insane with love.

Yeah. Have you seen the last live? :bawling: :( I watched like thousand times and i still cry at the part, when Toshi sang Forever Love. And then Yo-chan hugged him :( it's like... i can't describe it. I think Toshi was sorry on the last live for what he has done. Hide was crying all the time too.

X Japan is quieter than the normal music I listen to. R.I.P to hide. The video of his funeral..was sad. Yeah, the band was there, and Toshi sang 'Forever Love' and Yoshiki was on the piano. =\

...the part, when Toshi sang Forever Love. And then Yo-chan hugged him :( it's like... i can't describe it. I think Toshi was sorry on the last live for what he has done. Hide was crying all the time too.

Not really :-)

Toshi was dissapointed because X members blamed him of the disband (well, he disbanded X, hahaha) and not taking into consideration what he was feeling too... why?? because Toshi wasn't comfortable singing in X anymore, he expressed that, but the attitude in the band was like "hmmm if you say so..."

And the Last Live wasn't going to be done, Yoshiki (sorry, X...) forced Toshi to make it, they addopted a childish attitude of "we are considering to make a last concert, but we don't know what Toshi is thinking..." making him feel so bad that he had to accept to sing in that Last Live.

The hug?? of course it was real, their friendship started when they were just little kids, that's something you just don't forget that easy... and that hug happened at the right time, you can see how tense were Toshi/Yoshiki during the show, specially in Dahlia, when Toshi went to sing with Yoshiki, and he just ignored him, even Toshi stopped singing and his face is saying something like "ok, you don't want me here..."

Did you know what happened after the show?? the "goodbye" was very intense, and some stuff was broken because of angry, the kind of "angry" you feel when you don't want something to finish...

Very interested, SaVeKi. I hadn't really noticed that....no I did see that Yoshiki copped a attitude with Toshi, but I didn't know why at the time. Good insight, thanks.

darknoonthirty
Sep 21, 2006, 11:43
Yeah..that drum break Yo-chan did was pure fustration. X was all he had for so long, it was his dream come true. he finally had a family, and people who were true friends. yes, he's been with Toshi his whole life but..X was ...everything he ever wanted.

the last live is the saddest thing ive ever seen. i cry every single time. espically during Endless Rain, when the crowd starts cheering then Yoshiki simply can not play any more...its horrible. and hideto. i never thought i would get so emotional over something like this but every time i see hideto with x preforming i can't help but get very very sad.

and about toshi, i really undertand where he came from, yoshiki's lyrics are pretty intense, but, i dont know, theres something shady about the whole thing. but i can also understand the band being forcefull about having the last live.

the hug, as SaVeKi said, was completely genuine. i think Yoshiki at lest slightly understood where he was comming from, but about all, i think that he respected Toshi, and because of that everything happened as it did.

and before hide died, he and Yoshiki had been talking more and more and had somewhat solid plans to get X backtogether with some member changes, obviously...but as of May 2nd 1998 all of that changed and Yoshiki vowed never to have X again.

i know its long, but it had to be said, and i love this band more than i can express. i miss hide and X so very much. simply put, they changed my life.

fin.

I think the fans helped Yoshiki realize that he shouldn't be pissed. I think he knew that if X made all those people happy, then X's mission was accomplished. Maybe, that's why he hugged Toshi at the end, to say that he's sorry for bitching and that there is no hard feelings.

darknoonthirty
Sep 21, 2006, 12:26
most likely. the fans always seem to help Yoshiki come back to earth. well, ok, back from his world. and the look on his face when he was walking up towards Toshi was so feirce and intense, it was kinda scary...but then he hugged toshi and they held on for dear life. i think they were both apologizing at that moment. toshi even started crying.

does anybody here have the dvd of last live? i was wondering what is was like, if it was cut or edited in any way, becase i really want it, but only if its the whole, real, un-cut thing. well, im getting it any way, i just wanna know what im getting.

Do your remember the moment that I and Toshi walked toward each other? I had been thinking of beating him until that moment.
That's taken from www.xjapan.de

I can't even think about what would happen if he would do that  The fans would go crazy.

Sep 21, 2006, 20:04
i would have been sad and a little angry about the whole story
of X ending. so i kinda understand yoshiki, why he was pissed.
but you really can't force someone to do something that person
doesn't want to. so eventually it would have ended like that.
if X would still be a band even without hide, i dunno... it would
be so weird and intense all the time i think.

i don't know what i'm talking about here lol

i'd LOVE to hear some more stories from SaKeVi :-)
is that possible?

i personally think toshis vocals would be really hard to replace..not sure what yoshiki and hide had in mind for the vocalist back then..

yeah. i know what you mean, i just know that they were talking a lot about it and stuffness, there were no reports, that ive seen, about who they were thinking to sing...who knows what would have happened.

and Anchyyy...i kinda got that when i saw it. i was literally talking to screen going..yoshiki, what are you dong, dont hurt the toshi, that..would be bad..then about 5 steps before he got to him i think he and everybody in the Tokyo Dome realzised they were going to hug.

i dont think there has ever been a more emotionally charged concert...ever. we could sit here for days discussing it.

and one last thing about toshi's vocals..the man is amazing. i've read that he can span 3 octaves..thats..insane.

ok. this long rant is over.

And yeah Toshi... the best voice i've ever heard. Really. I'm not saying that because i'm still and i will remain a big fan of him, but because that's true. I know a lot of really good singers... but Toshi's voice beats them all. And his solo career wasn't that bad at all! I like a lot of songs, especally made in heaven and hana. They are beautiful :-)
