I am an American citizen and I arrived in Japan about 3 weeks ago and I just got my alien ID card. During christmas vacation I want to return home to visit America for a week or so. I have a multiple entry visa and I am here on a pre college study visa (certifcate of eligebility). Will the Japanese or American government notify my school if I exit and re enter?

contact the japanese embassy and the american one.. and ask on your school .. maybe some others can help you out here, but the right information should be at those places to be sure at least

My first thought was "Why would your school even care?"....then it struck me that you must be a minor and they must bear some responsibility for you.
If that is the case, then please don't be stabbing in the back the people (read: adults) who have agreed to take on that responibility and commitment. What if you sneak out for a week and during the course of that time someone from the school checks up on you to see if you're alright and you turn out to be, from their perspective, a missing person? Good way to start a big stink, doncha think?

I am not a minor in America I am 18. I don't know what age is minor standards in Japan. They don't check up on me so I am not to worried about that. I will make sure they don't think I am missing. It's a risky thing though.

At 18, in Japan you are still a minor.
If you feel you are not a minor, feel that they will not check up on you, and will make sure they don't think you are missing.....then exactly what is the problem with them knowing you went home for a week? Help me understand the problem here.

If your exchange program doesn't allow you to return home, and if you knew that when you entered the program, then I would like to recommend that you consider living up to your part of the bargain. Please take careful note of the the "ifs" in the preceding sentence.
