Hey guys,

Say I wanted to send a giant box full of books, clothes, and other miscelaneous items back to the US... about how much would that cost?

I know there is some special price for shipping books, let's ignore that for now.

I guess it depends on size and how much it weighs and stuff too but... whatever, just rough estimates is okay!

Planning the escape.

When I left Japan, I shipped a bunch of stuff back to the States. I found that just mailing it in the Japanese postal system was cheapest by far.

There's nothing quite like learning international shipping rates to make one reevaluate the sentimental value attached to items.

I beleive many people send things home by ship by putting them in a large box and chest. If I were to fill one with books, it would be heavy. maybe 100kgs. How does a shipping company lift it?

How would the post office system get it from the branch to the airport etc?

Not the easiest thing to do, but you could try and get friendly with the local foreign business community. I sometimes get emails from the local foreign business association offering spare space in large shipping containers (the kind you see on the back of trucks) for very low rates or even free. A number of local guys have businesses involving import/export but they don't always fill an entire container, so they offer the spare capacity around cheap.

Max you can send to Australia is 20kg, so you need to split it up into 20kg boxes, each costs 20,000 yen.

Like Mike said, things lose their value real quick when it comes to decision time :(

I thought you could SAL anything up to 30kg.

Why is Australia off this list?
