Of course...
SMAP's an extremely popular group, both for their music as well as for acting... all of the members of the group have been very active in the live-action "dramas" which populate the TV scene, and they've also had various successful variety shows on TV and radio as a group. They've been active as a group since around 1990... before that they were a back-up dancing group for another boy band, Hikaru Genji.
Were you looking for more of their music to check out? I'm not really a SMAP expert, but I know enough that I could probably help you a little bit if you had specific questions...
One of their most popular songs ever came out this year, in fact... it's called "Sekai ni hitotsu dake no hana".
Nice to meet you!

Ah, SMAP is bad boy band pop. Then again, all Japanese boy bands (as well as any other kind) are bad, so don't mind me. =P
Well... Tokio was okay...
Winter

Tokio played instruments, do they really count as a boy band in the normal sense?
And I liked Tokio. They had a certain energy that I enjoyed.

i used to enjoy watching the variety tv shows with my gf. it was fun. you just need "asian mindset" to appreciate that kinda stuff. those "types" of shows are only popular in countries like taiwan, korea,HK, etc... sorry but it's true!

Speaking of Japanese variety, did anyone watch Silly go Lucky before it changed?
Thats where the whole Yatta bs got thrusted into hyperdrive. Before that, it was a great show. Now I think they call the new format, 'Gonna go Crazy'. Its got like, 4 of the original members, and a few people who are newer, but pretty funny.

...hmmm SMAP... i cant comment more about their songs coz im a newbie to SMAP fandome i got myself in coz of TAKUYA, but i love Sekai ni Hitotsu dake no Hana...I now love Takuya Kimura he's a got good voice, drama actor, model, a hottie..."bad boy band", that's kinda rude coz i think they got talent, and if you see them perform, so far i only see their Made in Japan Concert 2003..."boy band, they're not, but a group" it's kinda different thing in the case of SMAP.
Am I the only one who things "SMAP" sounds like a wet beach towel being flatly smacked down onto a wooden picnic table? (Not the singing, the name of the group, I mean).

Nakai Masahiro, Kimura Takuya (Kimutaku for short), Katori Shingo, Kusanagi Tsuyoshi and Inagaki Goro and former member Mori Katsuyuki started out as skateboarding back-ups to popular group Hikaru Genji in 1988. The turn of the decade saw the end of the so-called 'idol groups' but clever marketing by their agency ensured that the members of SMAP were everywhere - TV shows, concerts, musicals, commercials, radio. Kimutaku in particular became poster boy for his generation and could demand huge fees for commercial appearances. Singles such as 'Gambarimasho' and 'Celery' have been huge sellers. Even the departure of Mori in 1995 to pursue a less-then-successful career as a motorcycle racer couldn't stop the SMAP juggernaut. They have histories related to sports...nothing more to it ? :souka:

Not that this has to do with SMAP, but you fail to mention there that Hikaru Genji was a boy band on roller skates... and SMAP backed them up on skateboards! I've actually seen Hikaru Genji with SMAP performing live (on videotape), and that's a pretty crazy scene...
:p
As far as the name goes, they're rarely referred to by that full name so probably they put some English words together that they thought sounded good... the group MAX is almost never referred to by their full name "Musical Active eXperience" either. I wouldn't think too much more about it...
:?
I just know their name SMAP is Spors, Music Assemble People. I'm not their big fan, but I like the song "Sekai ni hitotsu dake no hana"~~that's really good. And Kimura is cool, i watched his drama "Pride", briliant! And last time, I forget when, Beckham was on SMAPXSMAP, that's quite funny.
Hikaru Genji~~~hehe~~rollar skater boys. I like the song "Yuuki 100%"~~quite funny. And there is a new Jr. unit called "Kis-My-Ft."(strange name), their rollar skater teacher is the one of Hikaru Genji's. Cool~~~

is it true they sang a song with the backstreet boys?

Oct 2, 2005, 00:28
One of their songs is catchy, Sekai no Hitotsu...the rest of the title I have forgotten. Actually, I am a bit sick of it, just cause my six year old son has played that repeatedly. Still, in a bit, I'll be able to enjoy the song I think.
SMAP seems most popular among my middle-aged housewive students, as is Backstreet boys. Part of the big draw for these ladies is Kimura Takuya, who I've heard being a horrid singer has his microphone switched off.
Finnanna
Oct 2, 2005, 16:40
Actually I have heard that Kimurakun is the best singer of the whole band! I have no personal experience on this but I believe in that! I have only heard that Nakaikun is bad at singing but he makes it a joke on his solos. I'm not saying all the others are great singers but I think they sound really good together! I have many of their albums and I should know, shouldn't I?

I just love Shingo... not so much SMAP as a band.
He's fantastic in so many ways! Quirky, artistic, handsome, funny, he CAN sing, he's not afraid to do things that others may think odd.
My type of guy hahaha.
Finnanna
Oct 4, 2005, 00:02
I think Shingo is really nice as well but my favourite is totally Goro! I know he is a bit boring compared to other members but he is just so cute and adorable!
My "sister" from Japan really loves Shingo as well! And I can totally see why you and everyone else like him so much!
But Goro is still the best!
SMAP? Isn't that the one with Shingo Mama? I have heard Shinga mama no Oha rock before! But besides that.. n_n

I find SMAPs: "Sekai ni hitotsu dake no hana" very beautiful lyrics. My wife and I tried to translate it:
Hanaya no misesaki ni naranda - - At the corner of the flower shop
Ironna hana o miteita - - I saw various flowers
Hito sorezore konomi wa aru kedo - - everyone has different preference
Doremo minna kirei dane - - they are all beautiful
Kono naka de dare ga ichiban da nante - - they are not competing about
Arasou koto mo shinai de - - who is number one
Baketsu no naka hokorashige ni - - In the buckets they are
Chanto mune o hatteiru - - standing proudly
Sore na noni bokura ningen wa - - Why do we people have to
Doushite kou mo kurabeta garu? - - compare with each other?
Hitori hitori chigau noni sono naka de - - Even though each one is different
Ichiban ni naritagaru? - - why do we want to compete?
Sousa bokura wa - - We are the only
Sekai ni hitotsu dake no hana - - flower in the world
Hitori hitori chigau tane o motsu - - every person have different seeds
Sono hana o sakaseru koto dake ni - - We should only try to
Isshou kenmei ni nareba ii - - bloom our flower
Komatta youni warai nagara - - Smiling, but unable to choose
Zutto mayotteru hito ga iru - - for long time undecided
Ganbatte saita hana wa dore mo - - Because all the flowers which made
Kirei dakara shikata nai ne - - effort to bloom are all beautiful,
Yatto mise kara dete kita - - choosing one is difficult.
Sono hito ga kakaete ita - - The person who finally leaves the shop
Iro toridori no hanataba to - - with various flowers in a bouqet
Ureshi souna yokogao - - looking happy with smiling face.
Namae mo shira nakatta keredo - - I didn’t even know you name
Ano hi boku ni egao o kureta - - you gave me smiles
Dare mo kizukanai youna basho de - - Like flowers which blooms
Saiteta hana no youni - - in a place where no one notices
Sousa bokura wa - - We are the only
Sekai ni hitotsu dake no hana - - flower in the world
Hitori hitori chigau tane o motsu - - every person have different seeds
Sono hana o sakaseru koto dake ni - - We should only try to
Isshou kenmei ni nareba ii - - bloom our flower
Chiisai hana ya ooki na hana - - Small or big flower
Hitotsu toshite onaji mono wa nai kara - - there is no same flowers
NO.1 ni nara nakutemo ii - - that is why we don’t have to be No. 1
Moto moto tokubetsu na Only one - - More and more special "only one".

SMAP is pretty much the gayest crap I've ever heard!
Though, that one SMAP guy that's on Pussuma all of the time is hilarious.
I just wish they wouldn't sing ... *dodges things thrown at me*

I have to agree lol. There just another one of those groups with just really simple, boring, repetitive songs. Not to mention the fact that they are NOT good looking, which would bring them alot of fans [think of British groups, You will know what i mean. Like McFly and Westlife *shiver*]. They aren't 'extremely' popular, they just have their times [sadly] sometimes. W-inds is farrrr better, I consider them to be more profestionally better.

They can't sing. Plain and Simple. And their music is just as bad. Although, I hear worse all the time on Music Station. >_< It's always the 'popular acts of the moment' who seem to do the worst.
Actually, they're incredibly popular, for all that they've been around for about 15 years. That's a long time in the popular music industry. And they have a bazillion shows. o_O;; They even have a cooking show. And they're always in dramas and movies.
I don't even really care about SMAP. I just like the dramas Katori Shingo's in. And he's always being funny. He has the biggest smile, it's kind of scary. XD

SMAP is huge here in Japan. For the number of TV appearances they have; both as a group and individually. As to talent, well that song about the flowers is not so bad, I like the allusion of competitive flowers and people is interesting. As to singing, I think they suck big time. I saw the program with the Backstreet Boys, and every time a SMAP member sang I cringed.
Doing comedy, love it. These guys are pretty funny. They should stick with that.
