I've been waiting for something new from Diru too. It's been forever! When are they coming out with a new cd? I need new songs! I've listened to all of their other ones so many times I can sing them all backwards. Still enjoying them though. :-) It would just be nice to hear some new songs.

Kings of J-Rock take the impulsive approach for new album

Primed to launch a fresh assault on the rest of the world, Japanese metallic whackjobs Dir En Grey are in the midst of recording their seventh full-length album. The follow-up to 2007’s widely acclaimed The Marrow of a Bone, the band’s new opus is being recorded in Japan and produced by Yoshiki Hayashi, a founder member of X-Japan, one of the country’s biggest rock bands. Hammer spoke to Dir En Grey guitarist Kaoru about whether the new album was going to be the one to break the band both in the UK and the United States.

“Absolutely!” says Kaoru. “But we are trying to create Japanese sounds that are not British or American. We thought about getting an international engineer or producer, but we decided not to. We thought that recording in Japan might be more suitable for our work this time. We’ve never worked with Yoshiki before, but he’s like one of our forefathers. We call him ‘Abarenbo Shogun’ which means he’s a rowdy general.”

As with their previous albums, the as-yet-untitled new one is likely to feature a dizzying array of disparate styles alongside Dir En Grey’s trademark metal chops. As Kaoru explains, the band favour spontaneity over planning.

“I guess we well recognise the right direction for the songs as we progress,” he states. “Whatever happens, the album will be stuffed with guilt and reincarnation, as well as the past, present and future of Dir En Grey.”

Already huge in Japan, Dir En Grey look certain to build on their international reputation during 2008, as anyone who witnessed the scenes of hysteria when the band hit London last year will testify. As Kaoru explains, UK fans should prepare themselves for their imminent return.

“We will spend half of this year making an album and the rest touring,” he says. “There’s no specific plan right now, but we will be in the UK in the near future. Our shows in London last year were really amazing."

New press release, sounds really exciting:

"DIR EN GREY Begins Work On New Album - May 7, 2008

Japanese rockers DIR EN GREY have begun work on their next album at the studio in the Sony Tokyo building. Pre-production started at the beginning of March, with the actual recording of the first few tracks currently in progress. The band then plans to return to pre-production to work on the remainder of the songs.

"The album will be stuffed with themes of 'guilt and reincarnation' as well as 'the past, present and future of DIR EN GREY,'" guitarist Kaoru explains in a press release. "This will be heavier and darker than previous albums, with a sort of oriental and religious mood and connotations. We're experimenting with different sounds — we'd like to introduce a multitude of different instruments on this album."

Produced by the band itself, the CD is planned for release later in 2008, but no date has yet been set.

In other news, DIR EN GREY has been nominated in the "Best International Band" category at Metal Hammer Golden Gods 2008. Past winners of this award include KILLSWITCH ENGAGE, AVENGED SEVENFOLD and THE USED."

Hmm.. favourite PV is hard, theres so many! Probably either the full uncut obscure PV (my first encounter with diru.. and jrock in general..) or mazohyst of decadence, 'cos if the song isn't bad(good?) enough, listening to it with the PV can't be done without me just sitting there staring at the screen all the way through. And usually for a couple minutes after, too..

I really don't know what to expect from glass skin, they've said that the new album will be crazy and different, and dozing green was different enough from what they've done recently, so who knows what they'll be doing next. Plus have you all seen the cover art on the ohp? It's... interesting.. to say the least... Its definitely different to what I've come to know as Dir en grey anyway. I'm not sure I like the exact image they've chosen, its not great as art in that style goes, but I like the idea of it..
Also, agitated screams of maggots unplugged? How will that even work?? I can't wait to hear it and find out anyway!

That road killers thing I'm less convinced about... I mean, presumably they'll have to choose from bands which are signed to Road Runner records? And I doubt it will be bands they actually like, more ones that they think we would expect them to like, or it'd be filled with some really random stuff I'm sure. Still, could be fun to see what does end up on it, and easy money for Diru is easy money for Diru so I won't complain =)

I love the pv, it's really pretty. I think alone it would just be a 'look, innit pretty' sort of thing, not leave a huge impact on me like some of their stuff, but it actually works really well with the song. (except the dragons.. they just made me laugh, they were really random, lol)
And glass skin itself is amazing, if this is a preview to what uroboros is going to be like I'm really excited! Well, I am anyway, but you know.

What were you going for musically with the new record?
Kaoru: We tried to set an oriental atmosphere and wanted to make not only heavy sounds but also beautiful ones.

I think you will find on this album that it’s not all hard and heavy but it’s really beautiful and something that lets you visualize several scenes.

Are there any specific scenes you’re addressing?
I’d rather not say yet, because we want everyone to feel it by themselves when they listen to it.

Why did you decide to sign with The End Records for the release?
We thought they would be the most motivated to work with us among labels we had as options.

A lot of metal bands do really cheap videos and don’t put much thought into them. However, you always put a lot of time and effort into your videos. Do you think the music videos are as artistically important as the album?
Very important! It doesn’t make any sense for the band unless our will is reflected to everything that we can express ourselves. Basically, we like creating things and essentially have to spend time for it.

Tell us about the video for “Dozing Green” Who shot it, what is it about?
Mr. Hiroyuki Kondo, who has been working on our video works more than 10 years, has directed this music video. We thought it would be boring to simply edit footage expressing destruction and pain and our performing scene, so we decided to set video screens behind us so as to show both images at the same time.

Was there anything difficult about the shoot?
Nothing special, but I heard that when some members set off bottle rocket near the locale, they got yelled at by neighbors for all that noise.

Are the other songs on the album going to be similar to “Dozing Green?”
Nope. Maybe song with similar atmosphere though… Well, but, there is no similar or same song on this album at all.

Any funny stories about things that happened while recording the album?
Well, we have only painful memories. I can’t say anything more.

Asian metal seems to be getting more attention these days internationally. Dir En Grey, Sigh and Cthonic have all gotten a lot of press in the past couple years. What other Asian bands should we keep our eyes out for?
