Basic Conversation Practice for Beginners

Okies I've wanted to make a thread like this for a while. I've dallied a little in speaking Japanese on these boards. But I don't want to go in the middle of a conversation, and find I’ve translated it wrong, or I"m using completely improper sentence structure. :blush:

So this thread is for the most basic conversations, in order to better learn 1. The japanese characters. 2. Better understand the sentence structure. 3. Have one place where suggestions and tutoring is made by more advanced members, for easy look up. 4. Build confidence in typing and reading Japanese. :cool:

For this thread I'm hoping to have the japanese text, followed by an english translation at the bottom. Perhaps whited out so you can translate the text, then check what is written to make sure you are correct.

You might want to know that even if your library doesn't have a beginner text, if you have the title of a book you're interested in, a librarian can probably get it from another library. Of course knowing which one before seeing it is half the problem....:relief:

日本語の勉強　translates literally as "Japanese studies or "Study of Japanese."
　が is used to mark it as the subject。You'll have to let me know more specifically where the confusion lies. 好きです is like saying "It is liked."

Very good! How do we say in japanese "Your english is very good", and "Your japanese is very good". i know it involves 'jozu'. Elizabethsan told me, but I had to erase my messages for room. <--

I am also having troubles with katakana. How do I put a video games like "Mario kart" in katakana. I have trouble with what vowels to use.

Anata is not rude if you do not know the persons name.
If you know the person name who you are speaking to then do not use anata.
Anata is also used among Married couples and lovers to mean "darling or dear"

Katakana takes practice for us because it is completely based off how the word sounds and not spelled. LIke my name:
Damian in katakana it would not be ダミアン　Instead it is　デーミアン。

"Would you" rather than straightforward "Do you" and hence more polite.

I think urayamashii is often used as a way of complimenting the other person. (or at least that is how I've seen it used).

言われた方も嬉しいだろうから、ネガティブの意味がそ んなに強くないでしょう。

Because the other person might be happy it is said, the negative meaning is
probably not so strong.

There isnt' an invarient direct English correspondence, but I prefer to think of it more like good-natured envy than jealousy....if that helps at all. Still wishing I could live near some real mountains, though. :bluush: :p

However, with japanese chat, even though I do not understand most, I am learning hiragana and katakana very fast! It is wonderful.

My japanese is good? Eh, yeah right. Not really. I really get mixed reactions form the native japanese people (As far as I can tell). Some say it is good, most say it is bad. Here is the usual way they say it:

なにもおかしくないっすよ、アメリカさん、そして私の日本語も微妙ですから

I thought 'okashii' meant 'odd' but it can also mean 'difficult', 'unreasonable'.


Amerikasan is my name.

I do not understand this completely, however, I can guess:
nani mo okashi kunaiisuyo. (Referring to me), and my japanese mo difficult complicated desukara

Nani = what. mo = also
What is also odd, (kunaiisuyo I do not understand), my japanese is difficult. Perhaps he means japanese is a difficult language.

Foreigner no (copy), it is grave/serious.

Hmm, I'm not used to seeing foreigner spelled like that, interesting.
I suppose this means, strictly translated, "Copying of foreigner, it is serious'
I am not aware of the verb copula, aruna.

One more thing. I heard 'okasan' means mother, hehe. It is interesting to find out so many things use 'san' as part of keigo, politeness. I remember san is used as the most polite level, keigo level. So, calling your mother would be polite, so therefore it is used as 'san' at the end. Interesting. I also heard 'haha' meant mother as well, more like 'mommy' in english. Is this true? If it is, this is quite humurous. (No pun intended, LOL)

けど　（from けれども）／だけど = however (also used as but). They are not used at the beginning of sentences, but to link sentences together.

例えば（たとえば, for example)：
漫画（まんが）が好きですけど、少年漫画
（しょうねんまんが）があまり好きじゃありません。
I like manga, however (or but) I don't like shounen manga too much.

Ogenki ? (desuka?) I usually just use on the phone or in the introduction of a letter. I've never heard it in person either I guess since it's easier to see if the person is well 面と向かって especially if it's someone you see often.

You can also use "oh, hai, hai" for phone conversations with a friend as greeting or "ojama shimashitaka?" (am I interrupting ?) in more polite contexts.

I agree. It's the polite version of "dou desuka" and since the subject is often a person's mood or health condition, used alone would be like saying "How have you been doing ? Or how have you been getting along lately?" as a greeting.

If you're going to give a greeting, they almost invariably correspond to the time of day -- I don't think I've ever been told "Konnichiwa" before 10-11 in the morning or after 4-5 in the afternoon and never by a friend (member of your in-group) in person. Unless you want to sound like you don't know anything else, although according to the link, 'konnichiwa' anytime obviously is possible.. :-)

Here's an informal one, sorta. Try 元気してる？ (lit. Are you doing well?), which can be thought as "How are you?"

I'm not sure what you're trying to say. First of all, "wa" is は, not わ when it is used as a particle. Besides that, I don't know what you mean by "yasumashita." If you want to use yasumu, to rest, then rested is やすみました. Is that what you mean, "わたし　は　やすみました" - "I rested" ?

Indeed that's what I was trying to say. Like I said earlier I"m having trouble cementing what I"ve learned and now I'm trying to speak/type in the language. So that leads me to piecing things together, which means I'm probably getting most of it wrong. :p

I just guessed as yasumu means to be absent and -mashita makes it past tense, that it would mean that I had been absent, but no longer am, and am sorry (by adding sumimasen). :bluush:　And I keep forgetting that while spoken it is "wa" when typing I should be typing "ha".

Please forgive my pitiful knowledge of the language, I seriously wish I had more time dedicated to learning it. :relief:

Note that when you change the i-adj into garu form normally you are referring to a third person's state. This is especially the case for "-tagaru"

I've also heard from my native speaking friend about the case that using -tagaru to describe someone else may have the derogative implication of being a "wannabe" (ie someone who simply wants to become this and that but really having no specific/realistic plans about reaching the goal of becoming this and that). So "isha ni naritagatteiru" may have the negative tone of somebody as a doctor wannabe. It's probably something we have to pay attention to.

Just a friendly reminder: in order to avoid mojibake you should not put half-width characters in your text if you plan on having more than 25 Japanese characters. This includes letters, numbers, and punctuation. If you really want to use half-width characters then make sure you use an even amount, otherwise you'll get mojibake.
For example:
そうだな〜、ここから日本まで9時間ぐらいかかると思� ､んだ。でもまだ行ったことがないから。。。だがな、� ｢つか行くぞ、確かに。お金さえあればね。
Same thing with full-width "9" instead of the half-width one used above:
そうだな〜、ここから日本まで９時間ぐらいかかると思 うんだ。だがまだ行ったことがないから。。。だがな、 いつか行くぞ、確かに。お金さえあればね。
Same thing with another half-width character added:

Depends on what you mean by it. If you mean try to do something, then it's (y)oo to suru. If you mean try something out and see how it works or is, it's -te miru.

That's not really true--it's just polite. But if you're going to speak in 'slang' (tte iu ka wakaranai'n desu kedo ne...), then don't use "da" with an i-keiyoushi (IE hoshii dayo becomes hoshii yo).
Anyway, hajimemashite, and ganbatte kudasai ne!
