I went swimming after work today. After a couple of hours in the pool and sauna, I changed clothes and got ready to go home.
That's when I noticed my shoes were gone.
Gone.
Gee Oh En Ee.
Gone.

Jan 13, 2006, 20:19
Were they new? or nice shoes at least? What an inconvenience that must've been.
I couldn't imagine anyone trying to jack my shoes while I'm in the sauna... then again my feet are big and my shoes are pretty beat up.

Of all the things to steal...your shoes??? And I'm assuming they were your work shoes right?

shoes are gone... haha funny..... ahum...
so how did you get home?
*stealling shoes... what kind of shoes were it ?* I know your not happy with it , but in a couple of days your laughing about it... i am...

I didn't even get mad about it. The shoes were worn out to the point that I was going to retire them soon anyway. Also, my shoe size is 29. Most shoe stores in Japan only stock men's shoes up to size 27.5, sometimes 28. A size 29 is normally a special order. In other words....I don't think the person who stole them could possibly be interested in wearing them. And it isn't likely that the person put my shoes on by accident.
The pool loaned me a pair of indoor/outdoor slippers to go home in. I think they were about a size 22 or something.

Wow, 29cm ! That's almost the size of a Greek god. lol My size id 27.5 and it was alreday very difficult to find something I liked (or something at all) in most of the shops I went to. So I bought new shoes when I went back to Europe... As I only have one pair of "regular shoes" (apart from sport, hiking and dressed-up shoes), I would have been seriously pissed if that had happened to me.
That's strange, to steal a pair of shoes that's nearly worn out O_o I wonder, was it someone who knows you and plays a trick on you? Who did you annoy recently ? :D
Maybe it was someone else with big feet ? Maybe they struggled to find a pair of shoes big enough ? lol ....

I'm the same as you Mike...I need a 28.5 which is hard to find! Not to mention many of the styles are ugly as hell! I occasionally find something I like, but can't find my size! I own 4 pairs of shoes...hiking boots (for work), running shoes, sandles (because of the heat here), and a pair of dress shoes (for emergencies). I would be seriously pissed if someone stole any of them!

Actually, I have a theory about what likely became of them. If it is correct, I will probably find out the next time I go to the pool.

Just a couple of wild guesses.
Could it possibly be that someone "stole" them because you were a foreigner?
Or maybe the attendant threw them out because they were so old and worn out that he figured they couldn't possibly be worn by anyone.

some little pervert is now caressing and sniffing those poor old shoes; thinking of the hairy masculine gaijin who wore them. On the weekend, he drinks warm sake from one while having sex with the other; a man truly in heaven!

It sounds like somebody is having fun with your shoes.
Don't they have coin lockers where you can put your belongings in while you are in the pool?
If they don't, you should tell them to get them.

Someone stole a nice leather motorcycle jacket when I was working at a bar, (dj'ing)... (this was good old fashioned USA crime, not crime in Japan by the way)... I don't know when it happened, maybe I went to the bathroom and some yob though "hey, free jacket!"...
...but stealing shoes... A man needs to walk home! Someone stealing your shoes is the criminal equivalent of the pop top snapping off a can of pudding.
I'm also leaning towards the thrown away theory.

Will you tell us your theory, mikecash ?
Only if it turns out to be correct. While the theory makes perfect sense and is, I think, the most plausible scenario, there is a certain key aspect to it which particularly sensitive people might find offensive and I don't wish to needlessly start a knee-jerking session.

What shoes were they?
You best be lucky they weren't boots, i've stories that certain boots are just made for walking and thats just what they do. Its crazy.
You know i bet some homeless guy dressed in rags has got them, selling them for drugs. Were your socks taken aswell?

It's still a mystery. I went back to the pool a couple of days after that and the same girl was working the counter. She said that a pair of shoes had been left behind. They didn't resemble my shoes at all, were a different size, and were in better condition.
My suspicion is that a guy from an assisted living facility got my shoes by mistake. I have no way of confirming that, though.

Sorry to hear about your shoes, I hope the person that took them bring them back, and soon. I know about the problems about trying to buy large shoes here as I wear a size 34cm shoe. Here are some links to stores that have large shoe sizes available here in Japan.
I usually end up buy a few extra pairs when I go back to the states.

no one would want my toxic wal-mart sneakers, the smell is very distinct... perhaps if you soiled your shoes in the future they would not be stolen anymore
Here's my theory: Now a days people will do anything. From stealing shoes to buying air on eBay. People are weird. I mean who would steal crappy worn out shoes? Perhaps they are very poor and will take anything that may have some type of good use to them. I once had a pair of Basketball shoes stolen right out of my gym locker. They were NEW! and Allen Iversons. I was ticked off. But, I guess now I have a good reason to stink up my pair of shoes, so no one will want to steal them!
Good luck with your shoes! Hope you find that bastard!

I appreciate your kind thoughts, but am glad to say that even as low as my faith in my fellow man has sunk, it still remains higher than yours.
I believe it was just a simple matter of the staff from the assisted living facility having his hands full getting a very energetic mentally challenged young man ready to leave the pool. Very likely he didn't notice what shoes the guy had and grabbed a pair nearby thinking them to be the right ones. The young man was so exuberant that they probably took his trouble walking in my oversized shoes as part of his natural clumsiness/bounciness.

Yes, I do have very little faith in man, but I still have that remaining faith. (when it comes to property). I guess you can't blame me for living in an area where people just don't seem to care about others personal belongings, and being a victim of it.
Did that actually happen or are you just playing devils Advocate?
If that's your theory, then good luck with it, and good luck with everything else.

I find it to be the only plausible explanation. Do you see a problem with it?
No, I see no problem with it. It makes sense, but I was just wondering if you were just making up scenarios to help you cope with it? to make you feel better?
Really, though, I wasn't there and I don't know the people at that pool, or it's surroundings. So I guess whatever you say would be the best scenario. Again, Good Luck!

No, I see no problem with it. It makes sense, but I was just wondering if you were just making up scenarios to help you cope with it? to make you feel better?
Not at all.
There really was a mentally/developmentally challenged young man there accompanied by a member of the staff at the home where he lives (identifiable by a special swim cap with the word 付き添い on it).
He was quite exuberantly energetic in the pool and I can imagine that getting him changed back into street clothes for the return was quite a task for staffer, that he inadvertently picked up the wrong shoes, and that the young man's bounciness led to no one noticing that he was having trouble walking in shoes at least two sizes too big for him.
The shoes, while only 29cm, are practically clown-shoe large for the majority of Japanese males. Most shoe stores only carry in stock shoes up to 27.5cm. The pool was very lightly attended that day and the chances that somebody needing a pair of 29s intentionally made off with them is close to zero.

Maybe someone at the pool was jealous of your "gaijin-ness" or physique and decided to give you a little crap by taking your shoes.
Seriously, I know shoes in our size are hard to come by, I hope they make their way back to where you are soon.
Hell maybe they are on display at the local gas station as imitations of Giant Babba's shoes! (That happened once where I live and the people at the gas station actually tried to give me his shoes because I was the "only" one that even came close to fitting them. )

Anyone jealous of my physique is more deserving of pity than scorn. I would give such a person my shoes gladly and walk home through broken glass.

So can you get a hold of the challenged young mans helper and see if your theory is correct? I think that it is a very good theory and if you ask, you may receive.

Can you guys find rental shoes that fit you when you go bowling or ice-skating in Japan? Well, I'd better behave myself here on this site so that I won't get 30cm mammoth kicks on my face.

Wait, I just went online at a shoe size converter... and my size in US is 12 - does that really mean I have a size 30cm shoe in Japan like it says?!?! :worried:
