View Full Version : Which manga do you read? Which do you recommend?
I'm quite new to manga. I've only recently started to be interested in them. I loved European comics when I was at art college, but then my interest when on the back burner. But I'd like to find out more about manga.
OK, what do you recommend? So far I really enjoy Battle Royale manga (I've got up to volume 10 and can't wait to get to the end!), and also the series One and Wild Act. I've read some of Blade of Heaven, Dragonball and Dark Angel, too, but those first 3 I mentioned have been the ones I like best so far.
I just thought I'd make a general thread to discuss what are your favourite manga.

X/1999 has my HIGHEST recommendation!!! D.N. Angel (angels and demons and sexy thieves ^-^), Confidential Confessions (Emo warning!!!), Angel Sanctuary (high on contrivercy but just as high quality), Gravitation (mochiron :-) ), Hands Off (best comedy manga out there), Demon Diary (dark comedy), Magic Knights of Rayearth (It's CLAMP what more do ya want?), Brain Powered (MECHA!!!), Eerie Queerie ( lotsa shmexy shounen-ai...the first two vols. are the best, 3 and 4 kinda suck), Kill Me Kiss Me (gender bender).

I think it depends on what type you are looking for. I do recommend Akira. The ones available in the UK are in European style books, so the drawings are reversed. You'll notice that a lot of people are left handed when they do that.
I have the Battle Royal collection, except 15, as it has not been released yet.
I found Love Hina very amusing and Chobits is a good read. Can't really get into Fruits Basket, but I might continue with it. Bought the 1st book of Doll. That seem to be a collection of short stories over a series of books. How many, I'm not sure. Other I have included Uzamaki, The 4 Ring books and Ghost in the Shell. What I would like, but seem to be rarer than hens teeth is the Dirty Pair. I once read them in a short lived magazine called Manga Mania and loved it since, but finding it is a swine.
BTW I would buy manga online. I have found it averages about a quid to 2 quid cheaper than a bookshop. Play and amazon are the two I use.

Definately NANA! more of the story in wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nana_%28manga%29) i love it..
and Deathnote! pure genius and good plotting. please give this manga a read
other than that, i like a lot of shoujo mangas too..and one shots..Pretty Face (humorous), Midori no Hibi(very funny too), Brilliant Magic(Akino Miyawake),zettai kareshi and so on..
yaoi..YnM and gravi is famous..if you like things to be more graphic, there is always the gravi remix which has no clear plot. the manga exists solely for the purpose of sxx although many shoujo manga has that as well:blush:

A couple of years ago I read the full Dragonball manga and some of the Dragonball GT books for the first time. I have read every book 2-3 times each.
I have read the first book of Ranma 1/2 and DNAngel. Both was okay I guess, but I couldn't keep spending the money nor the time on reading manga :D

Today's recommendation
"拳闘暗黒伝セスタス(CESTVS)"
Imperial government Rome.
People's culture is the flower opened brilliant times.
However, contrary to the pizazza, fist guys fighting in boxing the ancient times done at the Colosseum are inferior || environmental.
Fist guy CESTVS which fought to obtain true freedom was inferior to a build, but sustained myself by born speed and technique of the teacher ZAFARU training.
Young genius soldier Ruska that what such he came across is troubled with friction with great father.
And Nero whom I was age younger identically, and was made to assume the emperor and fate.
After a short-lived chance meeting, the road of three boys was divided again.
However, … that a whirlpool of the history swallows all without a pardon.
This MANGA is not at all only it it is it in fight MANGA … because it is the subject and the story that it did in boxing the ancient times when I do genre reason daringly.
Because it is a boy that is laid by a chief character, not to mention a promise, love and the friendship of sports MANGA, friction with father and the element which said, a spectacle of a TV saga because of a turning point of the history is included!
For the width area, a thing at the time of a magazine publication with much suspension of publishment is disappointing, but a weak point is it!

Well, I'd say it depends on your taste, my friend.
If you enjoy slapstick comedy, nothing beats Love Hina
For straight fantasy, Fushigi Yugi is tops on my list
For the best in girls and guns action, Gunsmith Cats blows everything else away
A very good but little talked about series from the sci-fi genre that I liked from jump street was Silent Mobius
For some sweet and charming celestial hijinks, check out Ah, My Goddess
If you wanna enjoy lots of wild slugfests and fan service, the best is Battle Vixens.
And that's just a few off the top of my head as there's so many genres to enjoy!

Wall paper
http://www.tron.co.jp/weborigin/wallpapers/wallpage1.html
As for ANIME, the TV series and a movie were made
(STORY)
In 1999 Gigelf Liqueur, aided by the Magician's Guild and the Maverlick Corporation, set into motion a plan to open a gate between Earth and the world of Nemesis. The intent was to exchange Earth's polluted air and water with clean air and water from Nemesis. To aid in this endeavor, a huge cyclotron was built under Tokyo. Unfortunately for all involved, Ganossa Maximilian - Gigelf's old apprentice - sabotaged the plan, opening the gate early and perverting the gate for his own means. Following this event, Gigelf and the Magician's Guild battled an invasion of Lucifer Folk (the name for the inhabitants of Nemesis) for a number of years. Gigelf was killed in 2006 and it would seem that the rest of the Guild met similar fates over the next few years.
In 2023, Rally Cheyenne, daughter of Guild member Lufa Cheyenne, started the Attacked Mystification Police. Of mixed heritage (her father was from Nemesis), Rally felt partially responsible for the growing attacks on innocent humans by marauding creatures from Nemesis. She started the organization with a mere three officers (Kiddy Phenil, Lebia Maverlick and Nami Yamigumo). Over the next few years, she added Katsumi Liqueur and Yuki Saiko to the team; aiding in the fight to protect Earth from the vicious Lucifer Hawk.

Silent Mobius is my favorite sci-fi series. Really gripping and exciting. I've watched both the anime and the manga and enjoyed it immensely.

One of my favorite manga series which isn't talked about much because it doesn't have giant robots, magical girls or samurai but, in my view is a well done series is Remote:
http://www.justmanga.com/jmcover/159182740X.jpg
The heroine of the series is Kurumi Awaki, a somewhat whiny meter maid who's had to put off early retirement from the police department because she doesn't have the money for her impending wedding. She's assigned to Unsolved Crimes Division, Special Unit A where she meets Inspector Himuro, a young genius who is unable to leave the underground room in which he resides, and is physically unable to feel emotions. She acts as his ears and eyes on the street as they solve murders and other crimes.
The closest thing in America I can compare remote to is The Bone Collector, a movie from 1999 starring Denzel Washington as a detective rendered a quadriplegic after an accident during a case, so he recruits Angelina Jolie as his eyes and ears to help him track down a serial killer. If you haven't read Remote, check it out, I think it's an excellent crime/mystery manga.

Some of my favorites and this might have been mentioned:
Love Hina
Gravitation is just some of the best shounen ai out there.
Kizuna is a really good Yaoi series but just a tad bit harder than Gravi
Fake is also boys love but it is not really hard until the next volume. But it is really good its about two detectives so you get alot drama and the boys love part of the plot is that the partners one is gay and the other isn't and the gay one always hits on his partner.
Boys over Flowers is a really good Shoujo Series about poor girl goes to rich school and gets picked on by the four popular boys.
Bleach is also really good. Its about a guy who becomes a Shinigami and fights evil spirits (theres more to it than that but thats the rundown)
Tramps Like Us (Kimi wa Petto) is about a Career Woman who finds a boy beaten up sleeping in a box and she decides to keep him as a pet. Also has a drama series by the same name thats really good.
The Wallflower a pretty interesting read about an unattractive girl who's aunt tells 4 very attractive boys that they can live in her mansion free of rent, if they can turn her into a beautiful girl.
I would recommend:
Berserk: My username is based on the main character, thats how much I love it. It may be a bit violent, but each chapter is done perfectly and it has a feeling like God himself has worked on it. The story fulfills all genres; action, drama, comedy, love, etc.
Once, you pick up this manga, you will be addicted.
Naruto: Ninjas, for the win! 12 years ago a giant nine tailed demon fox appeared, who with one swing of its tail could create tsunamis and crumble mountains. The Leaf Ninjas fought it as hard as they could, many lost their lives, until a hero appeared and sacrificed his life to seal the demon inside a young child. That hero was called the Fourth Hokage. The series starts 12 years later, a young seemingly talentless Ninja named Uzumaki Naruto lives as the vessel who holds the Nine Tails. Despised by the villagers of the Leaf Village his whole life, and often viewed as the Nine Tails himself, Naruto dreams of becoming Hokage (leader of Leaf Village).
Hellsing: The battle of vampires; they fighting of the immortals. Amazing art casted with an amazing storyline and some cool characters. There are currently, eight volumes out and they are released slowly, means it'll be easier to catch up and catch on Hellsing discussions.

It's about a samurai who can't die untill hi kills a 1000 bad guys. And in the meentime he helps a girl to take revenge over her dead parents.

You might wanna look into Angel Sanctuary. It's my personal fav. It's got a dark tint to it (as most of Kaori Yuki's works do), as it deals with Angels and Demons and the war between them. More than that, though, is the compelling story and the amount of research behind it all (lots of references to Kaballah, the Bible, etc.). Interesting characters, although with a few typical cliches and conventions here and there. I have all of the original Japanese manga, and the English translation is currently underway (a little over midway done). The translation is relatively good (aside from a few missteps).
Look into Evangelion, if you wanna look at characters with a lot of psychology behind them. It's becoming another favorite. I personally like the manga over the anime, but I don't want to pass judgment so soon, since, unlike in other cases, the manga is coming after the anime. (psst.... pay no heed to the Shinji-haters, he's cool)
That's all I have to offer. I actually don't read much manga myself. Mostly because of the huge amount of cutesy shoujo/shounen titles on the bookshelves that turn me off.
:-)

I'm currentlly reading...
Death Note, Hikaru no Go, Fruits Basket,
Gamerz Heaven, Kanpai, Bleach, Earthian,
Absolute Boyfriend, Nana, Codename wa Sailor V,
Series I have finished:
Sailor Moon, Gravitation
What did I recommend...
Will, it depends on what
kinda series to you like.
Shonen, Shoujo, mech etc...
I'd recommend Confidental Confessions, it's a great 6 book series about real life problems teens face, even though your not a teen it's still a good series
Samurai Deeper Kyo it's a 27 book series with only 18 or 19 volumes released, but if your into the historical at parts, war and violent series this is one of the good ones for that, it has alot of historical people in the series.
Marmalade Boy it's a 8 book series, It's a romance one but very good and very cute.
I hope that helps some :-)
I read Whistle up to Volume 9 so far. Good for those who like sports, soccer or school life. Remote is also a good manga, very suspenseful.
I recently collected the Spriggan bunko editions. Though I understood a bit of kanji (I'm Chinese, after all), I didn't regret spending every cent for it.
I recommend the following manga books:

You might wanna look into Angel Sanctuary. It's my personal fav. It's got a dark tint to it (as most of Kaori Yuki's works do), as it deals with Angels and Demons and the war between them. More than that, though, is the compelling story and the amount of research behind it all (lots of references to Kaballah, the Bible, etc.). Interesting characters, although with a few typical cliches and conventions here and there. I have all of the original Japanese manga, and the English translation is currently underway (a little over midway done). The translation is relatively good (aside from a few missteps).
i absolutely love angel sanctuary!! Actually all works of Kaori Yuki i love...i definitely recommend her works...
other mangas i like are: tenjo tenge, bleach, goong (manhwa), tokyo crazy paradise, parfait tic, hana yori dango (aka boys over flowers)
so much more that are good. i would say check out manganews.net to see whats out there... lots and lots to browse through!

***Yellow and Gravitation contain adult situations between males (esp, Yellow *smiles*)... just a little warning incase you don't want to read that...****

I've just finished Azumanga Daioh. This is a great piece of manga. Hilarious, as it follow a group of girls through High school. Done in short comic strips and very addictive. I bought the first one to see what it was like and ordered the other 3 in one go. Brilliant.

AAHHH! 日本語のまんがが大好きです! (I love Japanese manga!!)
At the moment, I am reading Hana Kimi (adorable story about an American-born girl who transfers to a Japanese ALL BOY'S High School so she can go to school with her love Sano (who is a champion High Jumper). [[Download from: http://2hnh.info/hnh/index.php]]
I am also reading Koukou Debut!! Basically, about a girl who wants a boyfriend, but she is hopeless at attracting boys, so she seeks assisstance from Yoh, the hottest and coolest guy in the school... Eventually Yoh and her become an item and that's when the story gets interesting ;) [[Download from: www.boku-tachi.net]]

If you're just starting manga, well lets see, I started with doraemon :hihi: but I was 7 years old at that time.
dragon ball z would be good (unless you've already watched the anime which.... sucks compared to the manga). Its kind of the basic or the basic in reading manga, not a single person i know (who's an anime/manga fan) have not read dragon ball, at least from where i come from.
Then you can move on to slam dunk (which is great, anime's good too, but the story line is.... lets just say it ends differently)
Then when you're happy with your manga reading ability which can get very confusing sometimes, move on. after that 2 sets (which is a really really large set) you should be able to read any manga available. lol
I highly recommend fruits basket (coz the anime's not complete) and deathnote (i love this manga, read more than twice... of whatever i had)
Ghost in the shell innocense is very good too.
I think Fruits Basket:cool: if you like sohujo, Fruits Basket is very cute and
-Chobits
-The One I Love
-KareKano
-KODOCHA (kodomo no Omocha) "El Diario de sana"
-XXX Holic
-Tsubasa Reservoir C
-X/1999 (is shoujo?)
Shonen
-One Piece
-Trinity Blood
-Tengho Tenge
-GTO
-Rurouni Kenshin
-DayDream
-Ai Yori Aoshi
Shonen Ai
-Gravitation (is beautiful!)
-Lawful Drug
What I'm waiting for the next volume to come out is:
-Kamichu
-Ohran High School Host Club
-Trinity Blood
-Yotsubato
-Gunslinger Girl
-Gundam The Origin
-神戸在住(Kobe Zaijuu)
-神社のススメ(Jinja no Susume)
and, I finished Victorian Romance Emma last month.
Yeah, it turns out to be i'm reading ones mostly for girls...-_-;

Model is the f'ing greatest!!!!:D I'm obssessed with it. Um....Othello is a really cool "girl power" manga. The Dreaming :( It's scarry :( But uber thrilling :-)

I've just finished reading Saikano. Despite its rather strange premise (cute high school girl become a super weapon!) it is done rather well. The art itself is more minimal than some other manga I have read, but it doesn't detract from a rather good story.
