Which is your favorite Anim movie or series? Post it here!

The best movie i've seen is probably "Ghost in the Shell". While the story is nothing out of the ordinary, the whole atmosphere of this movie gave me the chills. The beautifull scene's combined with the sometimes moody, sometimes bombastic music have truely moved me.

Oh, and if you're a fan of the movie "The Matrix" and you haven't seen "Ghost in the Shell" yet, then you're in for a surprise. You'll never look at "The Matrix" in the same way again after seeing this.

I totally agree with you there... Ghost In The Shell is also my favourite. It's short, it's incredibly sweet for the gadget lovin' fan like me. The atmosphere is amazingly haunting in some scenes, especially those scenes where the Kusanagi is either alone or with someone, but remain silent. This anime moved me the most, and is followed shortly after by Metropolis. Metropolis is similar to GITS in some ways, but differ in the style of anime (more cartoony). Have you seen Metropolis? Simply amazing animation in that movie!

I really liked Ninja Scroll and Blood too. Am yet to see Perfect Blue. That's the next one on the list!

I have to admit that my knowledge about Japanese animation is limited. However, I liked "Records of Lodoss War" (hope I'm quoting it correctly) and in particular "Neon Evangelion". A bit violent though for my innocent taste.

The best movie I've seen (as recommended by my wife) was "Grave of the Fireflies (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1562197290/ref%3Dase%5Fjapanreferencepa/104-3770732-2299932)" ('Hotaru no Haka') by Isao Takahata. Very, very touching...

Amazon's Editorial Review:

Isao Takahata's powerful antiwar film has been praised by critics wherever it has been screened around the world. When their mother is killed in the firebombing of Tokyo near the end of World War II, teenage Seita and his little sister Setsuko are left on their own: their father is away, serving in the Imperial Navy. The two children initially stay with an aunt, but she has little affection for them and resents the time and money they require. The two children set up housekeeping in a cave by a stream, but their meager resources are quickly exhausted, and Seita is reduced to stealing to feed his sister. Despite his efforts, she succumbs to malnutrition. Seita painfully makes his way back to the devastated city where he quietly dies in a crowded railway station.

The strength of the film lies in Takahata's evenhanded portrayal of the characters. A sympathetic doctor, the greedy aunt, the disinterested cousins all know there is little they can do for Seita and Setsuko. Their resources, like their country's, are already overtaxed: anything they spare endangers their own survival. As in the Barefoot Gen films, no mention is made of Japan's role in the war as an aggressor; but the depiction of the needless suffering endured by its victims transcends national and ideological boundaries. --Charles Solomon

Am yet to see Perfect Blue. That's the next one on the list!

Perfect Blue is pretty good. It's probably not what you expect, but it's a very surprising movie.

I haven't seen Metropolis yet. You made me curious.

Metropolis is great in my eyes because I loved the old Fritz Lang version, which was pioneering for its time. The blend of CGI and anime in the remake is pretty nice to look at. Even the characters in the story notice it!

Although GITS is probably one of my faves, I really love the old Japanese anime as well. The kind with the distinctive illustrations that are more reminiscent of the old Japanese paintings rather than the modern Bubblegum style illustrations

I was very prejudiced when i watched Akira for the first time because everyone said it was such a good movie. Because of that, it didn't live up to my expectations.

I just got Crying Freeman this week...
Anyone seen it?

Peter

moyashi
May 17, 2002, 10:36
Crying Freeman is a pretty decent story.

If you're into the X rating and assasination thing you might wanna try to get Rapeman (sorry ladies) -- the name is HORRIBLE but the story isn't anywhere nearly as violent or non-moral compared to Crying Freeman.

Tezuka Ossamu's "Ribbon no Kishi" is my favorite in the classicals. In the last years, the best is Miyazaki Hayao's "Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi", I think.:D

Greetings!

I'll weigh in on this subject, though I have to divide my favorites into categories:

TV SERIES --- Cowboy Bebop
As much as I loved Kenshin when I saw it, this series was the tightest and most engaging show I've ever seen... with top-notch voice acting and twisted plotline, as well as a phenomenal soundtrack from Yoko Kanno. Truly amazing...

OVA SERIES --- Video Girl Ai  Koko wa Greenwood
I've gone back and forth between these two six-parters so many times that I had to list them both. Video Girl Ai was my first love, and if it weren't for this anime (and the original manga) I probably wouldn't have been as "into" things as I am now. My first Japanese music CD was the VGAi Soundtrack. However, Greenwood came up fast... the first four episodes are four of the funniest stories I've ever seen, and the last two parts change pace into a beautiful love story. I love 'em both!

MOVIE --- Whisper of the Heart
Truthfully, I really enjoy the Studio Ghibli films in general... each one is a real achievement, but I just have a special place in my heart for "Mimi o subaesa..." I might have given the lean to "Grave of the Fireflies", but that's a movie I could only watch once, as it was VERY emotionally draining! It is a must-see at least once, though...

It is very hard to pick favorites, though... there hasn't been much in the way of anime that has disappointed me.

Just my two cents, for what it's worth... :p

Whoa!! I've just seen Metropolis. Absolutely stunning!
It was a bit incoherent to me at first, but that was because i was distracted by the awesome CG-graphics and didn't pay enough attention to the subs.

In the end everything (literally) fell into place, with Ray Charles' "I can't stop loving you" being the perfect musical accompaniment to the scene. Very memorable!

Go see it if you get the chance!

Miyazaka Hayao's, Nauscica (wind valley?) not sure of the English title.

Scott
Jul 28, 2002, 10:09
Oooh, yes Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. An EXCELLENT movie. I own a Studio Ghibli boxset (they're widley and cheaply available on Ebay) with all of the Studio Ghibli greats. This may change after seeing Spirited Away, but as of now, my favorite Ghibli movie is Laputa: Castle in the Sky. It is an excellent movie with non stop action and a facsinating subject. If you haven't seen it go out and get it today! Disney was going to release it in America, but because of the title (Laputa is the equivilant of "the wh*re in Spanish) they have put it on hold.

moyashi
Jul 28, 2002, 19:01
hmm, that's too bad because the Japanese pronunciation is not even close to the spanish ...

Scott
Jul 29, 2002, 02:23
Very true, they were thinking of changing the name to Raputa because of the pronounciation of the R and L in Japanese, but they would have to edit some scenes where the word Laputa appears in the movie. That wouldn't be that hard at all, but I haven't heard anything new.

Twisted
Jul 29, 2002, 20:28
Off Topic: There's also a Japanese rockband called Laputa. I wonder if they know what it means...

On Topic: Disney sucks and they should keep their hands off anim.

Spirited away? Do you know the Japanese title?

Shinmeiryu

I heard it was quite good. Possibly better than princess monoke ... ahh hell I forgot how to say that one too :)

Yes, I'm expecting it to be quite good too. I should be getting it on DVD sometime this week. Mononoke Hime was an excellent movie.

Ɛq̐_B (Spirited Away) is a fantastic anime. I find it interested that almost all of the people posting in this thread have similar opinions of Miyazaki Hayao's (and Takahata, but Miyazaki has always (I think) been involved in Takahata's work) animations. My personal favorte of Ghibli's is ܂ (Whispers of the Heart). But I have loved all of Studio Ghibli's releases, including some of Miyazaki and Takahata's pre-Ghibli works (e.g.: p_Rp_) 'Though you're all probably familiar enough, a good reference for Ghibli works is: http://www.nausicaa.net/

For the record, I like almost all types of anime (some hentai is a little much for me...). Recently, I've watched "Excel Saga" - a great anime that makes fun of other anime. I've been watching Rurouni Kenshin and Noir also. They are very good.

I cannot pick a favorite of all time, because each genre is different and I like some better than others depending on my mood.
I'll try, but usually most recent is most remembered and thus most liked (I tend to fall in love with characters easily):

Television series: Love Hina (uЂ) but Angelic Layer is close second (CVgAWFNC[) and I've been wanting to see Akazukin Chacha (ԓ ``) because I've heard so many great things (yeah, I'm the kind of sicko who likes mahou shoujo)
OVA Series: FLCL (tN)
Movie: Anything from Ghibli, but specifically Whispers of the Heart (܂)

But realistically, I like everything. I am annoyed when they have stupid, depressing endings. (e.g.: grave of the fireflies, berserk, trigun, cowboy bebop)

Evangelion will always be my favourite
anime series as it was the first and the one that
introduced me to anime ^_^. Tenchi Muyo, which
is less serious, comes second. ^_^v

And oh, my favourite anime game: Xenogears - the
story is really really cool ^_^v.

"The Simpsons" and "King of the Hill" are certainly the best of their genre, very entertaining and yet subtle in their socio-criticism, something I'm missing in most J-anime.

I've read the GITS manga and when I saw the movie, it didn't lived up to may expectations. But the same thing happened with Akira. Read the manga first and saw the movie later. Not that they are bad, but I soo enjoyed the manga.

My favorite anime movie of the moment would be CB's: Knocking on Heavens Door, altough I really liked Princess Mononoke and it is from the same author of the very first anime movie I have ever seen: Nausicaa.
There is another one altough its screenplay was a bit weird but I loved the animation/music. I'm talking of Wings of Honneamise (hope I wrote it right.).. I found it very beautifull but strange at the same time.

I liked Rurouni Kenshin, I liked Fushigi Yuugi, I aslo like the manga of Ayashi No Ceres.. same kinda feel.

I thought Akira wasn't that great because I also had been told it was so great that it was inevitable that I was dissapointed. I like Card Captor Sakura... lol, but not one of the best I've ever seen.

Ghost in the Shell is gotta be up on my list tho, that movie is very unique.

Yes... the whole "DVD Zone" situation is very unfortunate for many of us around the world. While Japanese videos will work for us in the USA, DVD's from "Zone 2" will not. If for some reason you are unaware of how the DVD system works, check the following website out:

I hope it stays that way! Japan is best off with Doraemon and Crayon Shinchan taking care of that for us.

My favorites (sofar...I have by no means exhausted the available titles) would have to be spirited away (I just watched it and I liked it probably twice as much as princess mononoke) and ninja scroll. I thought metropolis was pretty good too. As for americanamation (I just made that up) I really like the Simpsons. Funny and lower class, but with sophistication. I am always entertained. The funny thing is Bart is my age or even older by "real life time" (I'm 21) and he doesn't look a day over...um...8 or 9 or...maybe 12.

anime/manga would be GTO (great teacher onizuka)
though it seems the anime does better with the translation (with subs) than the manga at points insofar as providing translators notes to cultrual references (eg kokkuri-san where the manga just says ouija board and changes the hiragana to letters) but leaves out many of the more comical and racy things the manga has, little things i know but thats me.
also i have to mention serial experimnets: lain

there are a lot of good titles already mentioned here... (i finally saw Ghost in the Shell, the ending was sooo cool!!)
i still adore Akira (it's a classic, and i wasn't around for the hype so i watched it not knowing what to expect (unlike Metropolis))
and this may sound really dumb but i have a lot of love for Armitage III: Poly-matrix (yes the movie, i realize that it is quite flawed, and dubbed ::ewww::, but i can't help it, there's just something there that hooked me...)
well that was predictable and dorky... for sap i'll go w/ Grave of the Fireflies (i probably cried more during (and after) that movie than any other)
list needs something else... i should probably throw a series on there... um... or not... (thinking hurts my brain) Cowboy Beebop is probably the best series i've seen (so many good shows go bad... this one retained it's watchability throughout, kudos to you, CB!)
:note:
oh!! one more! no one's mentioned Jin-Roh! now there's a good movie! i wasn't expecting much from it going in (i'm not a big fan of the technical mission secret ops military type stuff, and that's really what it looked like...) but it completely and totally blew me away. to the point of speechlessness. (look at how much i've typed already, i don't often shut up!) it was simply amazing, highly highly reccommended.

i'll stop now.

At first, my favorite was Akira, but I believe that was because of the amount of anime I was exposed to at the time. Now, my favorite is most definitely Barefoot Gen. That movie is quite deceptive... so cute in the beginning and instantly heart-breaking.

Other stuff I really digged:
Berserk
Blood: the last vampire (more than GitS :P )
Perfect Blue

I would have to say that there are just too many to list in one post, I will however, say that Metropolis, Avangelion (sp?), Perfect Blue, Blood - the last vampire and Princess Mononoke are definately in my fav's list. I LOVE the animation - I'm trying to use the styles in my own art. As far as I'm concerned, most of the animie movies that I have seen have a much more interesting plot and are full of more suspense than some of the live action movies that I've seen! I'll be an animie junkie forever!!!

I'm putting my hat in for Kenshin... I love its pseudo historical plot, and the characters. (Saitoh Hajime and Shinomori Aoshi Need I say more??). And the Dialogue... did anybody else get shivers when Aoshi says "the end has not been written, and the title of the strongest has not been bestowed... " (it loses a bit in the translation). I loved the OAVs as well.. but I the kyoto arc of the Television series was just too cool. (Im a shinsen gumi fan so sue me). Ive lived in Miburo... walked the same streets as them...and I cant get enough...

I love anime, and can also boast of watching many titles.

The best ones I find so far includes "RahXephon" and "Full Metal Panic". I guess Studio BONES and GONZO are doing excellent jobs in CG and plot layout. I can't wait to finish downloading "Wolf's Rain" - also from BONES and get started on it!

Well, there are alot other anime also worth mentioning; "Love Hina" is warm and funny, "Kenshin" has good music and a funny plot, "Cowboy Bebop" is a dark anime but really worth watching, "Gundam Seed" has an interesting plot so far, "Vandread" is funny as hell... man, i can go on forever...

But watch RahXephon, many plp say that it's an Eva ripoff. However, in my opinion is much much better than Eva, suceeding in areas in Eva; and not to mention better graphics and music!

Wow! I love anime!

Actually I've been hearing more how much RahXephon is a 10-rated title than it being an Eva ripoff lately. Many really think that it's the quintessential anime.

I still need to finish the series and movie that's out in Japan to make my own personal judgments.

I don't know why, but there seems to be an abundance of younger anime fans on this thread... Animes that rock in my opinion:

Gunbuster
Ghost in the Shell: Standalone complex (very recent)
Noir (also very recent)
Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi (Spirited Away)
Neko no ongaeshi (the latest Ghibli)

Excellent animes categorized:
Drama
Hotaru no haka (Grave of the fireflies)

Shoujo
Marmalade boy and Fushigi Yuugi

Sci-fi
Gunbuster Aim for the Top
Any of the Harlock series (Ginga Tetsudo 999 rules!)

Fantasy
Tenkuu no escaflowne

And, well, out of my own collection, I'd have a hard time pinning all the excellent animes I've seen... I can tell you that Gundam Seed (the latest Gundam on TV now in Japan) is worth a good look as well as the 20th aniversary production of the Emotion studios, Yukikaze (hard sci-fi; very good).

But I don't know about any of you, but I've been an avid anime fan most of my life (I grew up on Harlock and Grendizer, Heidi, Candy, and more); collected tons for about 5 years, rewatching the lot after being in Japan for 5 years and I find that my tastes have shifted. Some of the stuff I used to find great I now find so-so and some of the stuff I found so-so, I found better. Maybe it's the understanding of the culture and language... I recommend the study of it to all.

I have to agree with you there for simplicity. But the sheer length of it is staggering... I'm fairly certain that it's not up to date in the US, but I've been watching it here every Monday night since late 2000. It's been progressing listlessly for more than a year now. Takahashi Rumiko really wins the crown when it comes to writing interesting manga that loses its punch along the way. Inuyasha would have ended with style at the end of the second season. Narak? Haven't seen him for half a season... Did you see Maison Ikkoku? Same problem. We'll not even get started on Ranma...

It is a recent find for me; I always associated anime with the french-language cartoons I watched when I was reeeeeeally little. Thanks to a fantastic comic store near my home and an extremely bizarre comic by Suehiro Maruo, I became curious about the genre and started in the A's at the video store with Akira.

Things trickle here slowly too: Inuyasha is broadcasted on a national basic cable channel, but they have just been playing the first 32 or so episodes over and over again. The Cowboy Bebop movie was released in Japan in what? 2000? I went to see it on its American big-screen debut last month :P

Maybe the available allotment of translators is too busy translating journals on molecular biology and such heady stuff to waste time on pop culture fluff. ;D

May 21, 2003, 09:03
Actually, it has more to do with the acquisition of rights of all kinds. Trademarks, broadcast rights, marketing rights, etc. Which is one of the reasons why you're only beginning to see Gundam commercially in North America when it's over 25 years old. Bandai and some of its partner wanted the rights to be bought wholesale. In other words, if you wished to buy the rights to Gundam Wing, for example, you had to buy the rights for every single Gundam series in existence. We're talking about 12 series and several movies, it's just impossible.

Also, from my own experience here, what you get in North America are the dregs. The stuff that doesn't cost to much to buy and to market. Cowboy Beepop barely made a wave here.

As for associating anime and French, I can see that happening because the collaboration between the Japanese and the French during the 70s and 80s (even through to the early 90s) was the greatest in the manga industry. Still today, France is probably the single country in the world where manga is the most vastly distributed. I would know, I was born in Quebec and we used to get all the stuff from France when I was a kid... I grew up on the stuff. I was exposed to American comics and cartoons only when I hit puberty (no kidding).

Okay I just watched the Ruounin Kenshin OAV #2 has anybody else seen this thing??? The Ikeda Tea house affair was sweet!!! If ever there should be an award for people who join music to a script give the man who did in the second OAV deserves a medal. IT felt like you were watching a historical act of great significance. (which the Ikeda affair was) The way Watsuki seamlessly fits the Kenshin story into the history of the time is unbelievable. It is now my vote for my #1 fav anime.... unless #3 and 4 is better.. (unlikely though)

Akira, as cool as it is.......I still can't understand it. It's VERY deep! What I remember of it is that the voice of the guy in the red jacket speeding on his ever-so-cool futuristic motorcycle is the same as Leonardo from the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turltes cartoon from the late 80's!
I can't really say for sure what my favorite Anime is, because most of them are really excellent! But, my list goes as so:

Ranma - the Original Series, the movies, and the OAV Series such as "Desperately Seeking Shampoo" and "Akane & Her Sisters."
"Fist of the North Star", "Vampire Hunter D" (the so-called sequel was released recently, but it isn't as good in story line as the original), "Metropolis" by Osamu Tezuka, all the "Fatal Fury" videos, "Yu Yu Hakusho", "Lupin the 3rd", "TEKKEN: The Movie", "Suikoden: Demon Century"...........I have others that I like but won't list them all here. :P
Well, peace out!

Jul 23, 2003, 13:34
COWBOY BEBOP.......the series, on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim, the ending is SO depressing! Spike dies from blood loss after his final battle with his arch nemesis; even though his nemesis dies himself.
WHY? I dislike depressing story lines. See it enough in real life as it is. Well, aside from the depressing ending, the series in-general is pretty decent. Cool characters, lots of in-jokes & comical moments. But, in story line, I admit I've seen better.

the best film i've seen lately was grave of the fireflies. i was surprised i started weeping at the very end... i did like ghost in the shell when i saw it a while back. metropolis was okay, but i did watch it way too late at night and it kinda seeped into my dreams... lately, i'm addicted to saiyuki, [x] and cowboy bebop.

i also really like twilight of the dark master though most of my friends thought it was too weird/scary/bizarre.

does robotech count? i like that too.

My favorite anime series is Berserk: The Black Swordsman, fantastic journey filled with political intrigue, romance, demonic adversaries and,of course, wholesale bloodletting. I sat and watched all 25 episodes in one sitting, I just couldn't wait to see what happened next. Amazing piece of work.

...but for a single movie, my favorite is Megazone 23 Part 2, which for some reason I can't get here in the states in english, even though that's how I first saw it. Oh well, the search continues...

Most Overrated Series- Record of Lodoss War (blech)
A real snoozefest. Good art, and actually the prologue episode and music are pretty good, but a REALLY boring storyline with little development of what appeared to be possibly interesting characters, not to mention more of the incessant calling of someone's name..

I think Cowboy Bebop had me drawn in completely, together with it's beautiful production (direction, script, character etc.).

Wolf's Rain was excellent and has some of the saddest and cruelest moments I've ever seen in an anime.

For all out fun, FLCL does it for me. The creativity is amazing especially the choreography of the battles in it.

Since there are some Miyazaki fans here, I like Kurenai Buta (Porco Rosso) the most out of all his films.

For me, the best anime series and OVA remains Rurouni Kenshin. Although there are other that have superior quality of animation and better soundtracks like one of my other favorites, Cowboy Bebop, RK remains on top for me due to its plot and movitivation and character development

The best anime I've ever seen (in no particular order):
- Mononoke Hime (Princess Mononoke) (the best Miyazaki-sensei's movie I've ever watched)
- Hotaru no Haka (Grave of the Fireflies) (the saddest antiwar motion picture)
- Maria-Sama gi Miteru (sp?) (hands down. Among the best shoujo-ai anime I've ever watched)
- Azumanga Daioh (you'll never get bored watching it over and over again)
- Blood The Last Vampire
- Saishuu Heiji Kanojo & Mahoromatic (these two get a tie, for the fact that both the female protagonists are weapons. These two also got nice storyline, though the former is more gloomy)

waiting to be watched:
- Samurai 7
- Madlax
- Samurai Champloo

Currently in anime series:
Gunslinger Girl: One of the most beautiful and touching animes I have seen
Azumanga Daioh: Because it is one of the funniest series, not just anime, I have seen
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex: What can I say, it's Ghost in the Shell

In Anime Films:
Ghost in the Shell
Akira
Most of the Ghibli films, but as the top three
Porco Rosso, Nausicaa and My Neighbour Totoro

Ifm sure Ifve already chimed in on this topic, but I thought Ifd revisit it since I have many and varied tastes when it comes to anime, so I thought Ifd list my favorites from each of the numerous genres I have in my collection.

Magical Girls: Even though itfs been chided, derided, lambasted, flamed, laughed at, made fun of, despised, you name it, Sailor Moon remains the best of the magical girl genre and is arguably one of the most beloved anime series of all time.

Giant Robots: This may come as a surprise to most, but I like Gundam Wing over Neon Genesis Evangelion. The geopolitical drama, mecha battles and the shifting allegiances made Wing intriguing. Plus, unlike Evangelion, Wing had a satisfying ending.

Sci-Fi: I agree completely with Mycernius, Ghost in the Shell, in all its incarnations (the movies, Stand Alone Complex, 2nd Gig) represents perhaps the best pure sci-fi ever seen in anime. Great stories, great characters, GITS is cyber-fantastic.

Humor: For laugh-until-it-hurts insanity, you canft beat Excel Saga. Every sacred cow in anime was butchered by characters who were flat out crazy, and where else can you have a freaking dog warble the closing theme? Most excellent!

Horror: Even though the movie only ran about 50 minutes, Blood: The Last Vampire was excellent. It was dark, grim, moody, and, most of all, deliciously gory and violent. I canft wait for the follow-up series, Blood+ to make its way here.

Fantasy: For my money, Fushigi Yugi is the finest fantasy series ever. Yu Watasefs timeless story of love, friendship, honor, adventure and sacrifice is perfect in every sense of the word. Ifve watched the series four times and itfs never gotten old.

Shoujo: This may not be traditional slice of life anime, but Video Girl Ai certainly fits the bill, despite the fantasy plot of a girl who pops out of a TV to help a boyfs miserable love life, only to fall in love with the guy herself. A delightful story.

Yep, like I said, my tastes in anime are legion!

:-)

Anime-sensei? Hmm! I like the sound of that! :-)

By the way, I forgot to mention one of my favorite genres, girls with guns. That was a tough one because I had so many to choose from: Dirty Pair, Gunsmith Cats and Gunslinger Girl, but in the end, I went with Noir. The exploits of the world's most gorgeous assassin for hire and her young partner, a Japanese schoolgirl killing machine topped my list.

um... tough question so I'll post few titles... :)
D. N. Angel - just something magical.. it was one of the animes that got me into the whole anime thing
XXXholic - I like the story line a lot... it's very knowledgeable and different from others
Whistle - one of thos sports animes and a really good one.. :) not too many those unnatural super moves :)
I'll agree with the Sailor Moon because it's um kinda nice anime I mean it teaches kids about life alot (ok might sound kinda funny) but it really does :)
Candy Candy (one of my first animes) and the story is very touching... haven't seen anything like it.. :(
Ouran High School Host Club - just hilarious
GTO - um I liked the manga more.. :) but the anime is good too but when you watch the anime you have to read manga it's just addicting
and the last one would be Hana Yori Dango - an old anime but an awesome one :) a typical story about a poor girl but I liked the characters and how the story developed a lot :)

To throw in my 200 yen's worth:

Ghost in the Shell, in all it's incarnations, is wonderful. I'm about half way through "2nd Gig" at the minute and enjoying evey second.

Most of Studio Ghibli's stuff is enjoyable, particularly Whisper of the Heart and Only Yesterday. Oh, and Spirited Away, of course.

Recently enjoyed Otomi Zoshi (only seen the first 13), Cowboy Bebop, Gilgamesh and Last Exile.

I must admit, my viewing choices do tend to be based on whatever Play.com or HMV are doing cheap....

Anime to me can be organized into two groups - Hayao Miyazaki and everything else. From jaw dropping epic tales to a simple warm hearted story, Miyazaki's movies are a gift for all mankind. As for other animes, I would have to recommend the Rurouni Kenshin prequel OVA entitled Samurai X in English or 낤ɌSlj in Japan (correct me if I'm wrong with that:wave:). But beware, the English dub is absolutely horrid lol.

I also just got done watching Love Hina (u Ђ) and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's probably your best bet, along with the Tenchi Muyo series, for a slapstick romantic comedy.

But in staying with the topic of the thread my favorite anime is most definitely Castle of Cagliostro (JIXg̏) which is a Lupin flick done by Miyazaki.

Hm at this moment in time, i love the movie "Kiki's delivery service" by Miyazaki ('cos it captures my heart, its such a sweet lovely anime to chill out to) and FullMetal Alchemist, i haven't seen the whole series yet (i'm up to volume 6 episode 24 right now) but it has to be one of the most original anime series i have seen for a long time, the anime is drawn well and the scenery is often very beautiful and the plot in the anime is very captivating, always leaving you wanting for more etc  .

Although.. my favourite.. 'El Viaje de Chihiro'... Miyazaki Hayao is the best...

I think AKIRA will stay alltime-top no.1, with its strength and message and realization,
a fantastically enhancing point of view, a remarkable conclusion and tuning of science and fiction, a magnificiant expression of impressions.
It includes all the messages of later animes already in it (in '88!) and declares them all nonsense. But of course this is a question of taste, and also yes,
all is still just about what the observer eyes see..

AKIRA FOR EVER

I watched Hotaru no haku recently and it made my cry like a baby, it's so touching, one of the best anime I have ever seen. But I like Miyazaki's 'Spirited away' the most of all, although I have to agree that Akira is excelent indeed.
