I bought Oldboy sometime last year, but had I had heard that there was this earlier film by Chan Wook Park. Now Oldboy was a very good film with a nice twist at the end, but I have just seen Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and must say I actually prefer this to his second film. While it is nilistic in its story and ending you actually feel for the characters in the movie. None of the main characters are what you would call bad, just driven to what they do by circumstances. The movie is well directed, often with action taking place off screen until someone appears to walk into camera shot.
Waiting for the last of his Vengeance trilogy to come out now; Lady Vengeance. Hope he can keep up to standard with that comapared to Sympathy and Oldboy.
If you like asian films I highly recommend this film.

I downloaded Sympathy for lady Vengeance a few months ago and I must say it's a good movie ! Kinda like Old boy :) The only one I haven't seen from the trilogy is Sym. for Mr Vengeance :(
I saw it on cinema a few years back during the Tartan Asian film fest.
Perhaps i wasnt in much of a good mood that day, i didnt really enjoy it as much as old boy, although there was a few scenes that i thought were hilarious. (the scene with the group of guys listening to the wall :relief: )
I wanna see Lady Vengeance, although the reviews seem to criticise it alot for not being another Old Boy, still sounds like a good movie. WIll probably wait for the DVD release.
old boy was weak to me in the endng, but it was definitely worth watching
have not seen this movie, but i read the director's interview in giant robot and it was interesting

yea, sympathy for lady vengenace is a good movie. i saw it at the cinema in Japan, and then downloaded it after (w. english subtitles) so that i could understand more of it. it is definately more like old boy than sympathy for Mr. V. chan wook's dark humor prevails throughout with an equally good ending as oldboy. well, maybe not quite as good... :P

I think I watched Sympathy for Lady Vengeance about a month ago... is that the one with the parents whose kids were meddled with...? and I shouldnt ask too much because I dont want to give it away if it was.
I never knew there was a Mr V movie, I think im going to have to runaway to a DVD room this weekend and watch it.

I bought A Bittersweet Life sometime last year. Good movie.
BTW Alma I bought and watched Lady Vengence. Good film, but I agree with the critics that it is the weakest of the 3 films. I'll have to have a vengence trilogy day soon and watch them back to back.

an amazing korean film, so sad when the little girl drowns V_V....the end scene where the men get out of the car, is quite harrowing too.
