I'm probably completly wrong when i say this but are there no sexy japanese girls? obviously i mean women aged 18+. I mean, i've seen loads of beautiful chinese in the media- zhang ziyi, Lucy lui, etc but not really any Japanese. Only time i've thought otherwise is in the film "battle Royale" where
there are quite a few fit birds. It could be that there's not as many Japanese actresses and stuff, i don't know
Also, i'm quite new. whats the difference between a thread and a post? and between replies and views? i think i know but i want to make sure.

Back in the 1960s, I would say Akiko Wakabayashi, Kumi Mizuno and Mie Hama were hot. Currently, I would have to say Rei Kikukawa, Masami Nagasawa, Miho Yoshioka and Chiaru Niiyama among others.

MEGUMI, and RINKA are hot too!
A post is part of a thread.
A thread about Sexy japanese woman, have for example 10 posts.

Take your time, usually it takes people a few days before they let it be known that they suppose that Japanese people are incapable of typing english, that there are no 'sexy' Japanese women, that everyone hates Americans, and~ pondered why there aren't scores of Japanese people typing in Japanese on a primarily English forum.
You've fit all this into just one day.

I guess it's like any country and it also depends on your tastes...
For exemple I've been living in France for over 20 years and rarely see french girls I consider sexy or beautiful...

Yamada Yu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yu_Yamada).
You'll recognize her from Japanese television, as the CanCam girl... CanCam is a magazine for upwardly-mobile, vougue-ish Japanese women... CanCam itself is a contraction of the phrase I can Campus... as in, I can be a campus leader...
A pretty girl, and you learn something too! ;)*
*It's interesting to note that the people you see on television in Japan are all someone, in the states you can have basically no-name commercial actors, but the trend in Japan seems to be to feature a particular model, or talent, or pop-singer, from DHC water, to Raycious, to everything in between--- Japanese commercials are filled with the faces you already know.

And she'd be twice as pretty with half the paint. You're probably wise to avoid television... Evenings, I was always 'stuck' in front of a good number of talent programs because of the gf... though, I did come to have an odd fascination for them. It's funny when you're gone how you miss the oddest things.
She does probably do endorsements for that paint though!

Your extreme shallowness would be repugnant were it not for the mitigating factors of your youth and accompanying immaturity.
I want you to give just a little serious thought to something if you would, please.
Japanese women aren't just distant objects of teenaged masturbatory fantasyland to some of us here. They are our mothers, wives, daughters, nieces, girlfriends, friends, etc.
There are even a few posters here who are Japanese women themselves. Why don't you try asking them what they think about your tone?

I tend to find Western men like Lucy Liu, they think she is sexy and hot.
Conversely East Asian men don't really like her because of her slanted eyes, which is something consider not beautiful, if you take a look at East Asian dramas, movies you would find they never pick girls with slanted eyes but the ones with big double eye lids.

Lucy Lui, mmmm. I find her eyes attractive. I think it's similar to the situation with that seventies pop band ABBA. They are from Sweden but all the Swedes like the brunette and all the english like the blonde. I think some men like difference in women, maybe it's sort of a mysterious quality. For some reason many Westerners always mistaken her name to be Lucy Lui, its Lucy Liu. It's ok I bet Asians make spelling mistakes on names unfamiliar to their culture too.
Personally I think Lucy Liu's characters in the movies are quite comical, hence many of her movies are pleasurable to watch but I don't think she is resplendent.

Gaijin translates to "foreign person", saying "jap" is something more akin to referring to black people with the "N" word from what I have gathered.

Shinjuku station is in Tokyo, and is one of, if not the busiest commuter spots in the world. There is no shinkjku or shinjukjku station, and and I hope I'm not being too much of a pedant for correcting something so horribly misspelled.
Also, if you are to go by numbers, about 1.2 million men and women go through Shinjuku per day. If you were to go there, you probably would see some sexy women, but far, far less than a million of them.

I remember way back when I was dating my wife. I was trying to give her an idea how small my home town is, and we happened to be on a stairway in Shinjuku station at the time.
I told her that the number of people in her field of vision inside Shinjuku station at that moment far, far outnumbered the entire population of my hometown.

13,900,000 google hits (http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=misspelled&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8) says "misspelled" is fine. I think that using "t" for past tense is a newer and not yet accepted contruction as far as English teachers are concerned.
By the way, it's "pedantic (http://m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?va=pedantically)." "Pedanticity" isn't exactly a word, as it isn't listed in the dictionary (but neither is "pedanticness (http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=pedanticness&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8)," [3100 google hits, by the way] and we can't just not have a noun version of the word), and it only gets 655 google hits (http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=pedanticity&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8).

Two points:
1. I wasn't offended by your juvenile hijinks. I just wanted you to be aware that this is a moderated forum and while brutal bluntness is grudgingly tolerated, gratuitous vulgar abuse is not. I don't remember my exact words to admin, but I think it went something like "Would someone give my young friend a friendly warning, please?" Far better you learn this aspect of posting here from a post to a guy like me who doesn't take personal offense at it than it go unmentioned and you take things a step farther and find your butt banned from JREF. I like you, and want to keep you around.

When I read the first post (WAYYY before this got so off-topic), I thought 'the reason you don't see so many sexy (or un-sexy, for that matter) Japanese actresses in the West is because there aren't enough that speak passable English such that they can appear in a Hollywood film.'
I mean, isn't this why Zhang Ziyi played the Japanese geisha in that terrible movie?
Of course, this sort of comment might be more appropriate for the 'Education in Japan' section... :erm:

Actually, I think she played a geiko because she is recognizable, not because she speaks passable English. (Of course, I may be wrong, but she couldn't speak a lick 5 years ago, and that didn't stop Chris Tucker from hitting on her in Rush Hour 2.)
And "terrible movie"? Well, damn, I liked it. But all the Japanese, Korean, and Chinese students I tutor in English were all freaking out about it. I said it wasn't any different than foreign actors (usually English and Australians) playing Americans in Hollywood films. Aside from the fact that some of them overdo the "cowboy" accent, most Americans couldn't care less. ... Then again, we are a nation of immigrants anyway. We have Italians playing Jews, and Jews playing Irish, and Irish playing Italians in our movies.
Hmmm then the Chinese can demand to be called Huxianese or Zhonguanese then? It's true when addressing people you actually need to be quite careful.
My God, please, no! I have a hard enough time trying to decide if my students are either from Taiwan or Mainland China as it is.
I'm probably completly wrong when i say this but are there no sexy japanese girls?
I think the volume of people agreeing that you are wrong should be enough to convince you of the error of your ways. My voice (or keyboarding) need not reiterate what everyone else has said.
But there are beautiful women all over the world. There comes a time when sexy and hot aren't as impressive anymore, and beauty becomes more important. And in case you hadn't picked up on it, I'm implying that beauty and sexiness are two vastly different things, and the former is far superior to the latter, in my opinion.
This thread was a bad idea.
You are wise to note this.
I thought the word was well known, at least from the Churchill quote, "This is the sort of pedantry up with which I will not put".
For being so Anglo-Saxon, the English academics were quick to adopt Latin grammatical styles and abandon their Germanic ancestral grammatical roots. In German, Old and Middle English, you can end a sentence with a preposition, avoiding ridiculous "grammatically correct" but ridiculously awkward sentence structure. By the way, you don't end a sentence with a preposition in Latin because Latin doesn't have them. So the English trying to impose Latin-style grammar on a Germanic language is late Renaissance arrogance.

One of my favorite Japanese actresses who is in a lot of stuff out there is:
Nakama Yukie.
She is really pretty. She was in Gokusen -tv drama; this history movie about clans (sorry, I forgot the name), and some other stuff I can't remember off the top of my head.

I was reading from the original post and realy it did get me thinking. Now I concider myself to be fairly familiar with cinema and films in general and when I say this keep in mind that I am talking about Mainstream Hollywood, not foreign films or advertisements and the sort.
What I want to know is why there are so very few japanese actresses (and actors for that matter) taking part in all these movies. This is in no way to say that they can't or aren't suited to, but merely to ask why they aren't. For example, why is Memoirs of a Geisha played by the same people from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon? Correct me if I am wrong, but judging by their names, they sounded Chinese not Japanese.
Now if you pay close attention to the media today--including cinema, television, etc.--you would notice that people with unfamiliar faces have been staring in major roles alot lately. Unlike ten years ago it's not uncommon for a movie to have a cast of charactors completely unfamiliar to the viewer.
Most people seem to have taken this thread as an attack on japanese women, but with the idea in mind that all nationalities have individuals of exceptional tallent and visage, I would like to know why there are fewer that have gone mainstream. I mean if people no body has heard of from england can become rock stars overnight(almost literaly) and actresses from canada can rise to stardom right out of highschool by simply visiting new york, and if Jackie Chan and Will Smith can play a role as a cowboy(j/k) then why can't some one who is actualy Japanese play a Japanese charactor in a movie about Japan?
Again, I'm not attacking anyone by saying that they can't (I stress this because it's a sensitive issue many people attack in a shoot first ask questions later) I am simply saying that on the screen and when those credits role I'd like to see some names that at least look Japanese.
It's like when you go to Benihana's and you sit down to eat and the chef walks up to you and his name is Alberto Gonzolez. Sure the food is great and I have nothing against a mexican person or people working at an asian restourant, but when the whole kitchen is talking in spanish it does kinda effect the atmosphere. Given that there were two restourants side by side, both of them were identical except that one was all caucasion and the other was mexican, if you were going there to eat mexican food you would go to the one that employed mexicans. Of course most of the presumptions here are a little different. Where I live most people would rather go to the little taco shops because they not only taste better then el toritos and taco bell but they give larger portions.
Either way though, in film it has a completly different meaning. Most films try to provide a sence of realism and so as time goes on they improve on who and what they portray to make it more believable. So by taking all of this into consideration just try and tell me that it doesn't make sence to have a japanese actor play a part in a movie about a japanese person in japan. If you wanted to even try to fake it the closest nationality would be korean; however, it is my belief that many film makers use chinese people due to the richness of the film culture there(as well as the acknoledgement of it in mainstream media) and on the premise that most people wont know the difference. Of course if time has taught us one thing it is that time and technoledgy will increase the consumers expectations when it comes to what they believe to be realistic. With that said, I believe that we will see more asian cultures partisipating in mainstream cinema in the near future.

I'm not trying to refute you, here, but rather point out a possibility:
Perhaps Japanese actors/actresses don't want to star in Hollywood movies. It could be partially chalked up to all the ethnocentrism many of the threads on these boards talk about. I dunno.
But now that I think of it, Ken Watanabe was the only Japanese actor I recognize by name (there are a few others I recognize by sight, though), and he was in Memoirs of a Geisha.

Gaijin translates to "foreign person", saying "jap" is something more akin to referring to black people with the "N" word from what I have gathered.
Offtopic, but...as an American teenager, I can say from my own experience that the term 'jap' has morphed into something entirely different. People of all kinds use this term in an entirely neutral way, to identify those with Japanese blood, though its nearly always Asian-Americans who say it. It's become acceptable internet lingo too (Note the post above) You hear things like this all the time: "hey is ur friend jap too?" etc etc. It's another youth culture, abbreviation-minded thing. It does not carry anywhere near the same weight as it used to, and as the N word still does today. I will be honest though, if I heard someone refer to my mother as a Jap, I would be seriously ticked. I'm hapa, btw.
I don't know how 'jap' works into actual Japanese society.

I have many Asian and Asian-American friends, and the only place I hear or see the word "jap" used is on forums like this. It might be younger people using this word with innocent intent, but the first thing that comes to mind when I hear or see it is internment camps and WW2 propaganda. It probably isn't my place to be offended on other people's behalf, but I still think it's innapropriate, and I'd think that kids would hesitate to use it so often if they understood all the historical significance in those three letters.

I don't know how 'jap' works into actual Japanese society. There is a scene in the movie, Brother, with Kiteshi Kitano, where there is an English conversation going on in front of Kitano where one o f the antagonists uses the word jap in a derogatory way, and the end of that scene is Kitano shooting that person saying back in English, "[...] I understand `dirty Jap'. "
Maybe that's a statement being made about the word right there?

Maybe that's a statement being made about the word right there?
We should all know that the word was used during the Second World War as a derogatory reference to the Japanese. For the record, though, despite it's history, it is possible for words to devolve from derogatory to neutral or even affectionate. I've heard German Americans called "kraut" by friends, same as "Polock", "mick", or "wop." Maybe it's because "political correctness" says it's more acceptable to use ethnic slang/slurs for white people.
Anyway, point is, it's the same as the whole gaijin argument. If the word is being used negatively, then acknowledge it as inappropriate. But if people are using the word in a more neutral manner (i.e. shorthand), then maybe people should let it slide.

I will say this--- I read recently where women were polled globably about how they felt their bodies matched their own standards of beauty. Possibly. One of my friends from Japan was commenting how she was "too chubby" to wear a short skirt in Japan, but here in the U.S., it's alright. Now, this girl weighs maybe 115 maximum, and is just over 5'4". And I always thought women in America were overly self-conscious about their appearance!

That Japanese society sets standards and benchmarks that make normal people feel inadequite and impossible leading in some cases to serious mental problems regarding body image, diet and a number of other things?I don't know. I say so many negative things sometimes, I didn't want to come out and say it, but I think so. I've met a lot of Japanese girls who felt that they weren't "pretty", or "cute like normal Japanese", or good enough... ones who were made to feel very bad about themselves when they were young because they were heavier...
I do think that Japanese society produces a more than normal ammount of self-concious, inadequate feeling women... but I can't say if its simply an after effect of the seemingly constant attention paid to youth, and cuteness, over beauty and age... I just don't know.

I think your mandarin teacher is slim? And not many people are slim in the US hence it is considered attractive? Also since they started to use East Asian actors more and more in American movies or series there seem to be more western people liking East Asian women.

And not many people are slim in the US hence it is considered attractive? How fat do you think we are? We aren't of typical Asian stature, but nor do we all stuff ourselves with fast food. In fact, in 5 year surveys, recently the US went down in weight.
Also, being overweight is considered quite un-attractive in Japan... so, being slim is looked at even more as an asset to beauty than it is in the US... If anything the opposite of your statement is true.

Well in comparison to Asians' average sizes the US's people's sizes are definitely larger. Since there are lots of weight issues being brought up in the internet over the years until now that means the weight problem issue is still there.
This is also a statistical fact from many articles I have read. I am not attacking the US here. If the US people are slimming down as you said that's good news but I haven't heard of this yet until you said so.
I notice when something is rare in a country it somehow becomes popular. I happened to have an aunt who has the experience. In Taiwan she is just another slim woman on the street but in the US she is often praised by her Caucasian male friends or clients as the sexy slim beautiful East Asian woman. She is very popular in her working environment, this was not the case in Taiwan.

This actually happens all of the time. It isn't necessarily because she is slim. It is more likely because she is foreign. American guys find foreign girls attractive because they are mysterious and interesting. They can also be a refreshing change of pace from American women, because they have different expectations and needs, and offer different things in return. Appearance is a factor, but that is because many American women/girls dress similar, and someone who wears clothing that is different or carries themselves in a different way is unique and that is usually seen as a good (or at least interesting) thing in the U.S. Not to mention foreign accents are often considered sexy.

That's a good point. Yet even in Japan it is not uncommon to see, at least during the daytime, the hoardes of OL's all pretty much dressed the same way.
