While I was in Japan, that anoying song by Ozone became extremely popular... You may have seen the video in Japan, a still from which would be...

Now, I see sometimes 「イェイ」 written, as maybe a general exclamation, reading message boards and Japanese blogs, here and there... Does anyone know the etymology of this phrase in Japan, that's led to this isolated word being used?

I don't quite understand the kanji... 呑む is normally to drink, but, 飲ま, 飲 (to drink) or make someone drink... which I'm guessing is pronounced as "no", but I can't find a kanji lookup for this... and ま、 「のまのまいぇい」。。。 which makes up the lyrics of the song.

I don't know if this is pronounced as yei or ~ei... Anyone seen this before... I love sluthing modern slang.

ed: I don't know why my subject came out w/ "ツデツ"

The popularity of the song in Japan stems from "misheard lyrics" written in Romanian(?) converted into hilarious Japanese on various Japanese websites. (There had been many Flash movies of the variations of the lyrics in Japanese until recently. I don't know if there are any now.)

So, "noma, noma" ("numa numa" in the original) is obviously gramatically wrong but is understood as "nome, nome" (drink in command form).

イエイ (iei in the original) is the Japanese expression of "yay" in English and is widely used now because of that song.

Hope I answered your question! :relief:

Hope I answered your question! :relief:Yes you did! Thank you very much--- I'm going to wager that this has something also to do with 2ch, the bbs in Japan--- (it seemed to come up a lot when I was 'sleuthing') where I think the lyrics might have been as you say, mistranslated... I've heard the lyrics, and they're sort of uh, nonsense, so--- I don't know what they're supposed to mean!

The titles hate me too. At least now I know that it isn't something personal.

Titles hate everybody. I worked hard to get 一番好きな季節 to come out right, I still can't get Mikawa Ossan's 芥川龍之介 to come out right, and now this. It's a miracle I managed to get ニタニタ into カタカナ. もう諦めた!
