View Full Version : 多分 (tabun): how much uncertainty is inherent within?

Hello, everybody! I've found myself with a bit of free time and a Japanese question, so I thought I'd stop in to say hi. I hope everyone's well.
Well, my question's about 多分 (たぶん). I can't determine the level of uncertainty here. In short, is it more "maybe" or more "probably"? I don't want to use it until I have a decent grasp on this. The differences there are subtle but important!

I'd put it around "probably." I'll usually use it with でしょう
多分忙しいでしょうね。

多分 is to me expresses slightly more certainty than 'probably' in English and can at times end up closer to "I would think" or "I would guess", fine with a "desu" ending as well.
『たぶん」は『会話』をちょっと柔らかくしていますね。
「たぶん」といった方が優しい感じがするんでしょうね。
日本で、楽しく遊んでいるようでよかったですね。:p

As the kanji for "tabun" represents, it basically means "for the large part." So, the probability should be more than 50%.
As Elizabeth noted, "tabun" can also be used to soften the tone of your opinion, even if you are more than 99% sure (but not exactly 100%).
Because of the range of probability, it has to be translated differently in English, depending on context. :-)

「多分」というほど、強い意味ではないかもしれないけ れど、よく、英語の 「probably」 の
言葉も見込みは非常に高い（少なくとも十分ある）と言 うことでしょう。
そういう気持ちに変わりはありませんね。 :-)
確かに、ニュアンスが違うし、その単語だけでは例文、 前後がないと説明しにくいです。

「Just say yes / I'm not asking you agree with everything, only what you understand] :p 。。。というような
ニュアンスが伝えたかったんですよ。それの別の言い方 があるでしょう。
自分の中ではっきり答えが分からないときに 「Without thinking too much, just agree」
の意味には 日本語で言うと 「思わずに、「はい」と言いなさい」 など
が近いでしょうか？直訳ですね。:bluush: :relief:

Ｅｌｉｚａｂｅｔｈさん、こういうときに便利な表現が ありますよ
「とりあえず」
この場合だったら、「とりあえず「はい」って言ってね 」という感じかな。:-)

PS.あれ、どうして文字化けしちゃうんだろう？
ローマ字、カッコ、数字などを使う場合、是非全角文字にしてください。そうすれば文字化けを避 けられます。

また文字化けすることがあったら全部全角で試してみま す。

「日本での生活が・・・」も「日本にいる生活が・・・ 」も大丈夫ですか。
「日本での生活」は大丈夫ですよ。
「日本にいる生活」も間違がいではありませんが、
「日本にいるのが」というほうがしっくりくるかな。 :cool:
