hey folks...
due to my recent boredom, i went to the movies with some friends yesterday. as always, i didn't know much about the film i was going to see. they just told me that it is pretty gory .. i've seen all kind of splatter / action movies and i can say that i'm kinda hard-boiled in this matter. but that was too much...
hostel started like any random stupid teenie movie like euro trip with awful jokes and hot chicks. but all of a sudden, the flick turns into a collection of disgusting, extremely detailed torture-scenes like thight-drilling, parkinson-surgery, messing up faces with a cutting torch, severing limbs with a chainsaw - the list goes on.
well, i've seen things like that in many other movies before, but there was a difference this time... unlike other 'horror' films (wouldn't call it like that, because there wasn't any real thrill or tension or anything) it wasn't scary, it was just gross. the plot was miserable, same with camera and starring (im sure quentin tarantino didn't do anything for this film)
even more ridiculous was how this film paints a black and false picture of slovakia. mobs of street kids who kill for a some dollars, corrupt cops who support the rich, torturing badmans and so on. same with the rest of europe, which seemed like some kind of america-hating outback or something.
during the whole film, i couldn't wait till it's over. i can absolutely understand people leaving in the middle.
wrah, i can't stop complaining about this crap.:(
so what's about you? have you seen it? or are you planning to?

Thanks for clearing that up, Heliobacter.
That sounds more or less how I imagined 'Hostel' to be.
Like yourself I enjoy horror films, but if it is simply an exercise in grossing people out, then I'm not that interested.
There was another film out recently called 'Feeder', about a group of men who have a fetish for heavily obese women and enjoy feeding them to death (and other things) . Rank !
Each to their own.

I don't really have any love or dislike for horror movies, and i can tolerate quite a bit of gore in movies as well as long as they have something good about them like an interesting storyline/concept- generally, when i see a good movie, i like it.
I avoided "hostel" as i expected it to be like what you described heliobacter- just a movie trying to kill people in the most graphic and horrible ways imagionable. That kind of stuff really does not appeal to me.
Its almost like horror movies now days just try to compete and out-do each other as much as posible in the gore factor content and little else...
Usually i like tarantino movies- i thoroughly enjoyed the likes of Kill Bill 1 &2, Reservoir dogs, pulp fiction...But not stuff like "hostel".

*moved it to the Movie section of the forum + edit the poll for the people who tought it was an OK movie!
I saw a little piece of it, wasn't that bad, but not fantastic!! I am looking forward to see SAW 3 this year... just hope they won't get any worse, like othere movies that made a second/ third/ fourth movie

yo, saw is way better than hostel. at least the first movie.
i thought everything in the japan forum has to be japan related, and since hostel is an american movie, i chose chit-chat.
(although the sweet girl that got her face anihilated with a cutting torch was japanese... I COULDN'T STAND IT :( :( :( :( :( :( :( )
edit:
@ rich303
i'll give feeder a wide berth then. don't wanna see something like that for a long time.
@ tokis-phoenix
you hit the nail on the head (what a suitable phrase when talkin bout a torture movie). the film hasn't got anything but disgusting gore. no subtile horror at all. it hits you right in your face.

As Dutch almost mentioned, you can compare Hostel pretty much to the Saw's.
I saw it in a pretty crappy quality version. But I would say it is pretty good, deffently a movie that I will purchase when it is released in Denmark.
thumps up

huh? saw 1 had all these puzzles, weird camera angles (fisheye in the corner of that spine-chilling room), that sudden change at the end...
hostel hasn't got anything, and if you've seen a screener, even the wicked parts must have been boring :souka:
it's like a porno flick for gore fetishists. not aesthetic, just hardcore

Do you even know the plot?
I didn't see a screener, i saw the whole movie. Did you?

i've read carl barks dailies that had more of a story.
btw: screeners are whole movies, but recorded directly in the cinema via camcorder. -> crappy quality

okay..
Saw:
A old man notice he has cancer, He drives of a cliff but surives. Now he waste his time be creating puzzles for other people to solve, or they'll die. The female drug-***** who wins her puzzle succeds him afterwards.
For such a plot I think Matt damon and ben affleck would have been the guys captured in the first. Will Ferrel would play Jigsaw, and Shannon Doherty would have been playing the role of the drug-*****. Mean Whhile you would se small clips with Jay & Silent bob stadning in front of Jig saw hideout. Miramax would have produced it

I haven't watched "Hostel" yet, but I watched both of the "Saw" movies and enjoyed both of them. I actually picked up "Hostel" on the rental counter and put it back because I saw nothing that appealed to me.

There is one thing that I dislike so much about this movie, and that is that when they are in Amsterdam ( Netherlands!!!!!) they talk German, instead of Dutch... grrrr what an insult
