a personal favorite is Hirai Ken ... a soul'ish type along the lines of the Gospelers and Chemistry.

Why are only women showing up recently?

How about Dragon Ash, GLAY, Gackt, and what not?

Twisted
May 4, 2002, 05:03
Ok, i've added a few female singers to make this poll representative...:D
We'll do male artists later.

Welcome on board A-chan.

yeah, nanase aikawa has been out of action for a bit hasn't she!

Twisted
May 19, 2002, 19:14
Momoe Yamaguchi?? She's not singing anymore is she?

And Aikawa has indeed been too busy giving birth to a healthy baby boy (at least i think it was a boy), but it's good to see she's back again.
One of the first JPop cd's i bought was Paradox. After ID I lost track of her because i was discovering so much other good Japanese artists. :)

thank you for warm welcome^__^*

yes, aikawa is busy with her family at the moment... someone told me she wants to release a new rock-album this spring, but, I fear^^;;, it will take a little bit more time to record that first...
I like the way the new maxisingle looks like... really crazy %DD~~*haha* I'm curious what it will sound like *jumpsarround*^^"

Yamaguchi is also busy with family, she has 2(?) sons, hasn't she..?? But it was long time ago...-.-
No, she's not singing anymore... BUT I LIIIIKE HER MUSIC SO MUCH WHATEVER WILL HAPPEN!! XD~~~ ( I like that song "E=MC˛" a lot^^;)

wheres dreams come true?
no bands allowed?

Twisted
May 25, 2002, 07:16
No, let's just keep this poll a female singer only poll.
If i would add bands and male singers to this list it would grow a bit too long. I'll make seperate polls for these later.

Well all the ones I listen to are on the list but I picked Utada Hikaru because I started listening to her first. Bonnie Pink is great so is Ayumi Hamasaki and Zard.

um.. how do you vote for puffy? had to choose yuki, hoping that refers to the singer of judy and mary... but is that not j-rock? a mach three carves between the boundaries

Twisted
Jun 22, 2002, 20:58
Puffy is not a solo-artist.
I'll create some other polls with bands and male artists soon (or feel free to do so yourself).

Yuki is indeed the one from Judy and Mary.

Greetings!

That was a really tough choice, as so many of my favorite artists were included there... but I had to go with Sheena Ringo. I love the "Shouso Strip" album... her music is so awesome and innovative!

However, I might have had to change my vote had I seen either Momoe Yamaguchi or Yuming...

Koji, why have you restricted the pol to a single choice ? I'd like to be able to choose all the ones I like. I chose Ayu, as she is surely my favorite (but I don't know well all the singers listed).

Oct 15, 2002, 03:19
i vote utada!! i like her song best! ^__^

Twisted
Oct 15, 2002, 04:03
@Rhymester:
What did you think of her latest album? I heard a lot of people complaining that it was too different from the first two.

rhymester*
Oct 16, 2002, 02:03
i like it a lot! I love Tokyo nights, Sakura Drops, Hikari..they are pretty good.

although i like her earlier style, like for Automatic, i think the style she has now is still nice and unique! I wouldn't mind if she switches back to her older style though haha

Twisted
Oct 16, 2002, 06:07
Her first two cd's were warmer.
Deep River is a good cd in it's own right, but a lot of people keep comparing artists with their past. A rather bad habbit, i would say.

Travelling is still my favorite track off this album. I like Hikari too but that's mainly because of the simplicity of the promo-vid.

rhymester*
Oct 16, 2002, 17:07
yes its a bad thing to compare previous albums, sometimes artistes want to try out something new.

my fav track is Tokyo Nights!

Oct 25, 2002, 17:44
This was a tough call, but although Utada Hikaru is great, I like Sakamoto Maaya more. And I have more Maaya's mp3s :-)
But Morning Musume is even better. Yes, I know its a band, but...

moyashi
Oct 26, 2002, 01:42
hehe, just bought the Morning Moosesume 13 mini-novel album set ... hmmm.... not what I really expected. I wanted to see more pictures and 1 book instead of 13 mini-books. lololo ... but the box they came was clear about it at least.

Twisted
Oct 26, 2002, 07:27
Really? I didn't think you were the type, Moyashi.

Oct 26, 2002, 09:36
Yeah, my wife wanted it too since we both thought it was a collection of nursery stories. They're more on the 10 year old level though. They came in a photo-type album with a stamper and sticker kit.

I really don't like most of the units but I was thinking about my daughter. Hey, in a few years she'll be into some strange girl unit anyway so why not start practicing a little earlier.

"Dreams Come True" is a pretty decent j-pop band.

And my wife used to really like old school j-pop idol "Toshinobu Kubota."

Twisted
Nov 5, 2002, 15:54
Old school idol?
As far as i know Toshinobu Kubota is still a very succesful up and coming R&B singer. But then again, i never looked into his history.

Actually Kubota started out in the 80's, my wife still loves his music, eventhough she admits, "his time is over."

In 1999 sony was trying to plug him on the "Japan not for sale" sampler cd series, which were meant for radiostations abroad.
I'm not sure if he also featured on the "Japan for sale" album which was later available for consumers.

moyashi
Nov 7, 2002, 02:32
Kuraki Mai is a babe!

Kubota ... haha, back in 1990 I was listening to his old stuff like "Missing"
He's a 30 something generation singer along the lines of ??? hmmm .... Peter Cetera or Bryan Adams ... errrrrr ... sort of ....

Kubota has been hanging out in NYC for like forever. He comes back to Japan every so often to make some more cash. His songs always do pretty decent.

Hmm. When I try to vote, the screen turned white.

Anyway, anyone here like Imai Miki, Makihara Noriyuki or Le Couple? I like Imai Miki. More like Jazz/R&B than pop.

Twisted
Nov 16, 2002, 00:20
I've heard of them, but i don't think i have much of them in my collection. I like jazz/R&B as well, but more in the likes of Mondo Grosso, Bird and Monday Michiru. That's more acid-jazz then R&B though.

As far as other artists, I've been really interested in Chitose Hajime. Shes relativly new, does enka / reggae fusion. But I listen to enough that as long as its new, I like it. I still need to listen more to come up with a favorite.

HnR
Feb 27, 2003, 13:58
I voted for NONE of them, because I've never heard such a bunch of excruciating vocalists.... EEEEEEK!

It's unfortunate as Japan has some fine instrumental talent but vocalists are in short supply.

Shinmeiryu
Feb 27, 2003, 19:38
If you haven't heard this singer, then I would recommend Maaya Sakamoto. She definitely posesses the vocal gifts, Japanese or English.

HnR
Feb 27, 2003, 23:03
There's a distinct lack of talented japanese vocalists.... very rare.

A shame, since there's a lot of fine J-musicians here.

Twisted
Feb 27, 2003, 23:21
Having good vocals isn't a necessity anymore with todays production techniques. Besides, artist popularity has a higher priority, because that's what mainly sells the records.

Actually, there's enough talent in Japan, but you have to move away from the mainstream.

FumetsuGolf
Feb 28, 2003, 06:49
I didn't see BoA up there, but I probably would have voted for Utada Hikaru anyway. :)

Though I am somewhat saddened that she got married. :(

HnR
Feb 28, 2003, 09:53
Sorry I wrote it twice wrote it twice... still getting used to this place and thought the first one had failed.

Well it's amazing that with the latest technology, J-pop singers STILL manage to sound so dire... maybe their lack of vocal skills are beyond the scope of even the latest pitch correctors.

You really notice the difference when they perform live that's when I run for cover!

Certainly, some of the non-mainstream singers are better, but at best, they're still so so when you put them on a global comparison.

The only one I've heard with any merit is Nora from the defunct Orchestra de la Luz. I've seen her play in Tokyo and Yokohama and she can really do it... all is Spanish too. A good vocalist, but not outstanding.

Well actually, i want to add more polls. I'll just leave this one as it is.

You might wanna check out the album Universe (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=PCCA-1594) from Kyoko Fukada. It's produced by Konishi Yasuharu, the mastermind behind P5.

P5 vocalist Maki Nomiya has also released a few solo-albums which are worth checking out.

Maaya is the best of her kind. Despite what others may say, she did well singing all of her songs. I am very pleased to know that there is one singer who decided to dedicate her gift to anime music wwithout regrets.
