I have worked in the Ross Sea and surrounding oceans for around 10 years and have seen the Japanese whaling vessels many times. I have seen pods of Minki whales every year and some pods have well over 1000 whales. Tell me please whats the difference between killing a whale and killing a cow. maybe we have higher cow numbers and thats why no one cares about that. If you have seen the number of Minki whales for your self you would know there are plenty they are also very fast growing as far as whale growth goes. I see no problems at all with Whaling for research or commerical purposes as long as it is a controled Fishery. I believe green peace are targeting the wrong people when they head south to the Ross sea and try and stop fishing operations. The Japanese always return with there quota so in my books its a failed mission and a waste of money because let me tell you its not cheap to send a vessel all that way. The japanese on the vessels are people just like you and I trying to make a living they are sent down there by higher forces. If i was given the chance to work on a Japanese whale vessel I would in the blink of an eye. Looks like fun to me

Hi Neo7001,

Your comment about Minke whales numbers is very interesting.
They are certainly no ecological reasons to oppose a controled and limited harvest of abundant whale species such as Minke whales in the Antarctic.
Besides, the meat from Antarctic Minke whales is healthy, with almost no mercury or chemicals.

However, whales have been symbols of the struggle to protect the environment for more than 30 years and have been used by so-called environmentalists to draw the attention. Greenpeace and co. are keeping people to believe all whales species are in danger of extinction because it makes it easier to raise funds. They don't care about whales but about their finances. Nowadays, environmentalism as it is done by these NGOs is no more than a lucratic business.
So you can expect more lies as long as people give a lot of money to Greenpeace, IFAW, Sea Shepherd, WDCS, etc.

Its good to finally get an educated responce with regards to the whaling drama. i work on fishing vessels in antarctica and we also have had our share of dramas with green peace... as for the sea shepard he is a danger to human lives ramming vessels in antarctica is not a good look... once he came close to the vessel i worked on demanding to know our purpose in antarctica. what it has to do with him i dont know... we are licenced by CCAMLR to work there. I am not against the green peace but i am against their try hard tatics. you can read some of my other posts here http://members.greenpeace.org/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=11
