Two kids in one of my classes today had a very brief exchange but I can't figure out what it meant. I know it was about the other kid's name but that's about it. This was it:

Kid 1: nan no shouhei?
Kid 2: fuji

Huh? Is this something to do with the kanji character used to write his name? (Btw, I could be wrong about his name being 'Shouhei' but he definately said 'fuji)

hm, my wild guess is, Kid 2's name could be "Fujino Shouhei"...

Maybe kid 1 didn't quite catch Shouhei's family name, except "no" part, and asked him what it was before "no".

There are many family names that ends with "no",
中野 "Nakano", 島野 "Shimano", 水野 "Mizuno" and whatnot.
So, 'What "no" did you say?' was the question and 'It's Fuji, Fujino' (藤野) was the answer...?

...Maybe.

Anyone?

Could there be more than one Shouhei in the class?

Then Cue's answer is looking good.
