my first recommendation is to learn hiragana and katakana. It is a very important step towards learning the language. Just do a search for "hiragana," "katakana," or plain "kana" here on the forum, and you should find plenty of helpful resources. If you have any specific questions I would be more than happy to help.

Since you are in Cali you shouldn't have a problem. The West Coast is full of Japanese speakers. If you have a broadband connection and you are familiar with file sharing programs you could probably find something to download if you can't afford to buy anything.

If you can afford to buy some stuff, the Barnes & Noble here has tons of stuff, I'm sure the B&N or Borders or whatever you have there would have even more since you are on the West Coast.

If you want to find people local to you that want to help, then check this link

spelling in Romaji is unimportant assuming your pronunciation is correct and when you learn the Kana you spell correctly, but it's generally "sukoshi" (the 'u' is silent, more or less) and "wakarimasu" (r's almost sound 'd'-like, but not exactly the same)

http://japanese.meetup.com/Seconded. This is where I found a local Japanese language meet-up near me... It's great to be able to go out and interact with people in Japanese, after studying, and listening, and learning, this is the only way to really make Japanse sink in using it, often, with other people.

Through IM or Email. I have yahoo and aim also msn but i dont really go on it that much.

How about doing it here on the forum? That way, other people who are learning can follow along and maybe pick up something at the same time. Also, if somebody gives you something bogus or questionable, there will be others eager to jump in and provide the correct info. That's a benefit you would miss by using one of those instant messaging services.

Thanks in advance?

You're welcome?
