Haha, I too am hosting 2 Japanese students right now actually and I hosted one guy last year. Here're some tips.

Uhhh, they really like the movies because movies in Japan are around $15 a ticket, so they'll be surprised when you bring em to a matinee for around $6 and even a full $10 ticket is still "cheap" compared to 15 cuz it all adds up.

Shopping is good. They like clothes a helluvalot from what I've seen. They dress so weird but it's so tight !!!

Not many Mexican restaurants in Japan. Take 'em to Del Taco, Taco Bell, El Pollo Loco. They'll either love it or hate it. They seem to like "In N Out" too.

They like to study ALOT so leave em alone when they're doin that ...

My students love taking pictures. Buy em a pretty good Cameraphone, because in Japan, their cell phone is their life. I am not joking, if you don't have a cell phone in Japan, you're automatically considered a loser.

I don't know if you're hosting a High School student but if you are, they really like American music. Usually Rap, my students love Beyonce and Sean Paul lol. My "brother" last year liked Sum 41 and Green Day and all that lol. Maybe an ipod nano would be nice for Christmas.

TALK TO THEM ALOT !!!

If I think of any more I'll be sure to holla. Hope this helps !!!

Oh, you probably already figured this out already but buy a Japanese-English and English-Japanese dictionary. You'll find it really helpful, although I'm 99.9% sure he/she will have a "Word Tank" (English/Japanese Translation Computer Doohickey) it's nice to have one too.

And they don't like hot (temperature) food. Haha, we ordered Pizza once and when it came, we all started grubbin outta the box. But my host kid just stared in amazement while he waited about 5-minutes for his slice to cool down lol. I asked him if he didn't like pizza and he just said "Chigau. Demo mada ammari atsui da." (or sumtin like dat) Which is roughly, "No, (I do like Pizza). But it's still too hot (for me right now.)"

well, there are some people who have neko-jita (cat tongue) and don't have much tolerance for heat, but generally it seems that Japanese people don't like spicy foods. Also I've never met a Japanese person who liked root-beer. They've all complained that it tastes like medicine.

So, don't try to feed them super-spicy food (unless they ask for it), and don't give them root beer to wash it down (unless they ask for it). It's a good idea to ask them first what they like and don't like before feeding them anything.

Haha, lmfao !!! So true !! reminds me of the good old days when my "brother" was here. He said it tastes like Cough Syrup or something. Haha, and the first time I bought A&W Root Beer, he immediately saw the "BEER" and pointed it out.

Anyways, yeah. I don't think they like Spicy food either although I've met two who do. I remember this one time where my friend, Nozomi, saw my Listerine Cinnamon Pocket Strips and I offered her one. She stuck it in her mouth and started crying "Aahh, Karai !!" and she ran to the bathroom to wash her mouth out ><, it was so cuuuute. But then her/my Best Friend, Kazumi, wanted one too and popped it in as if it was popcorn. Haha.

And at the request of another member, this is a "Word Tank" (aka Pocket Electronic Dictionary)

I have two Japanese friends and they like going out for pizza and tacos, and, oh, they like musical gadgets (iPods, etc.).
