I think all of our parents had some wierd reactions, after hearing JRock or looking at JRock pictures. I'm just interested in some funny stories, becouse my mom sure reacted funny:

Not too long ago, I decorated my room with Gazette pictures, mostly Kai and Uruha. When my mom came in and looked around, she looked stunned and made a funny face. "I never thought you were... you know..." I just looked at her, confused, she was fighting for words. "You know, liking girls is OK with me" and she ran out and I was like "WTF is with you, woman?":souka:

If you have something to share, please do so.

well when my mom saw my wallpaper she acted just as i thought she was gonna act..
i thought my mom will say ''cmon, change the picture already! i dont want to watch ugly girls on the desktop *whineing and complaining*''
me: ''shut up, they are a very cool band and i love them!''
mom 'WHAT?? you like these girls? what are you, a lesbian?''
me no they are all m... *doing a second thought*... i didnt mean that i was in love with them. ^^.''
mom ''yeah.. well she is very pretty *pointing at Uruha*''
me'' yeah, SHE is very pretty - -" ''

ACK! That kinda happened to me!
Dad:*points* "that is a very pretty girl you have on your desktop"
Me: "erm its a Man..."
Dad: " Oh...really...erm...thats a very pretty man ^^;;"
Me: "Yes it is..."
Dad: "Any other girly men you have on your computer"
Me: "erm...no..."*thinks about all the folders of pictures I have*

And also when my Aunt came over XD
Aunt: "ooo what nice pictures on your wall"
Me: "Thanks ^^"
Aunt: "But why are they all girls...I thought you liked boys"
Me: "I DO...They are men!"
Aunt: "WHAT??!?!" O_O
And then she left the room XDD

My brother always claims my comp, it's the only one that has msn.

He thought Kyo is a girl??? Well, my mother would probably think it too, saying: "Such an ugly woman! I'm worried about you." or something like this...

Actully, my dad reacted normaly, he looked at my desktop and asked: What's that?
I'm like: Just some Japanese band, I really like them. These guys rock (Dir en grey was on desktop).
And he was cool about it: Ok, they look like women..pretty women..Now I know where did you see THAT haircut<-- pointing at my hair!

My bro was other story, he was: OMG the guys are cool gimme some pics to show to my friends, they'll think they're girls, then I'll make fun of them and kept on talking about some evil master plan how to tell all of his friends that they're gay..I have a weird family! I love 'em!!!

If you've read the Diru thread you'll know my mom loves jrock. My mom's been ok with it for a long time. I just showed her pictures and she's like their very beautiful men.

My dad was ok with it too, he's just like whatever you like. He knew they we're men too.

Interesting thread!

I do not listen to Jrock, but to other Japanese music, and when other Dutch people here that they sometimes look at me with strange faces, and ask why......

I think it is cool to not always be STANDARD, listen to BSB, BRitney Spears or Beyonce like all the rest

@ Moffeltoff: I dunno about sexy to be completely androgyne :souka: But to me, most of Japanese men look like men to me. (There is just a few exception.)
And I think that people do find Marilyn Manson sexy... It's all a matter of preference.

Anyway, I'm adult so I don't have to bother about what my parents think. But my mom, I played her some Jrock music and she likes it (she's not really into heavy music but I play her stuff like Merry and Malice Mizer, and Are you ready to ROCK, she likes that ^^). Although my mom isn't very musical, period, so she tries to appreciate my interests but she isn't interested in music even though she trys to look interested (I miss my Dad! :bawling: )

As regards their look..... well, she thinks some of them look feminine because they have a small, delicate bone structure to their face, and also because if they are wearing makeup and jewellery and have their eyebrows shaped. She is quite good at analysing things like that. :-) She never made any stupid or ignorant remarks... she isn't so narrow-minded as to think they must all be gay or something. Still, I suppose she's kinda used to theatrical-related kinds of stuff, with me and my life. :p so it doesn't seem so very surprising.

She did think one picture of Kozi looked like a woman though, she said 'Really, that is not a woman?' (it was a live picture with a nice light ^^) and I (when I had recovered from my laughing fit!) said 'No...' and she said 'But he's fluffy!' :cute:  ........ 'Yes, he is, isn't he!' ... haha. I said 'He doesn't look like a woman just because he's wearing a feathery thing!' :D

Rancid__

Aaaw he's fluffy:cute:  but it's a good point tho

There was one Turkish guy in my class last year and he was like so crazy about all the girls and he saw a picture of Dir en grey I had on my desk and was like "Ahhh, those guys are ugly, especially that one!" He said pointing at Kyo and then he noticed Shinya and was like  "Gosh, this girl is so pretty! What is she doing with them?" and he KISSED that picture!!! Me and my friend were staring at him like :o and then my friend said: "Actually it's a man..". :D You should have seen that guy's face!!He was so disguasted!
My mom dislike Intetsu from Ayabie for some reason.. :worried: She looked at his picture on their album and laughed
Mom:He can't pose!
Me:Sure,he can!
Mom:He's ugly..
Me:He's kawaii!You don't understand!
Then she had a really stupid expression on her face and stick her tonque out... :souka:
Mom:Am I kawaii too?
Me: No. :o

My mom only likes Kyo.. :-)

I swear I'll never be a parent like that when I'll have kids!

Well at first my parents were not against it, but they just don't understand it. Now my dad is like whatever she's going to do what she's going to do. And my mom she is actually starting to support me a bit. Like when I decided to go to Japan to see Dir en grey, everyone thought I was crazy but my mom was just like okay well if thats what she likes its okay. Its her own money, she's an adult.

My mom is also jealous of the J-Rockers cause of how pretty they look. And she thought Alice Nine was girls. I had put the new poster of them from the Arena 37 mag up and she was like are those girls. I was just like as many posters I have on my wall you should know they are ALL men lol.

But she is actually able to recognize the members of Dir en grey and Miyavi

Mom: Yes, they do!

I've been getting more and more into japanese music each year, and now I'm obsessed with J-rock. Which is a good thing since it means I'm no long obsessed with Lord of the Rings. I had a crush on the guys who played the hobbits... and Legolas, Aragorn, and Boromir.

well this is an interesting thread hehe so ok here's my story lol

I lived on my own for about three years in another state and that was when I started liking Jrock, so I had my computer full of images of many bands, and at that time my wallpaper was of Miyavi. My parents new I liked Jrock but didnt know how Jrockers looked like, until a year ago that my mom went to visit me and she saw my wallpaper and...

Mom: o.O" why do you have a girl in your computer?
Me: well that's not a girls that's a really cute boy
Mom: WHAT?! No thats's not true, he looks like a girl to me
Me: Nope Im positive he's a boy

She gave a freaked look after that and left XDDD

We dont talk much about the subject since then, she only makes ewwww faces when she passes by and sees my pics, my dad doesnt cares, and my brother thinks Im wierd, but he kinda accepts it, actually I can say he supports me, BUT the funny stories began when my friends found out about it.

One of the funniest thing was when I met this girl at the university

Girl:May I take a look at your wallet?
Me: yeah sure!
( have a pic of Ruki (Gazette) inside hehe)
Girl: awe! is that you?
Me: WTF?! o.O do I look asian to you?
Girl: well no, so who's this girl?
Me: He's a guy
Girl: rrrriiiiggghhhttt

and she left :( . Now that I know her better she thinks Im wierd but she doesnt really care, and we are good friends!

AHHH Ive written so much :relief: Ill share some other stories later

I have some pictures of Jrockers on the wall (and some of my friends, and random pics ^_^) and pics of Eve of Destiny... and she says "Wow that's a great picture" *points to Kozi* "is that you?" ... I mean like why the hell would I have a picture of myself in my office?!! :wary:  It's bad enough that I have to look in the mirror in the morning. ><

my friends are kinda worried about me.

friends: cmon turn yourself back to german and english music
me:*sarcastically* no!
friends: oh,please!
me: *a bit evil and even more sarcastic* NEVER! *runs off with jrock pictures and music cd's and stuff* muhahahhahhaaaaaa
-----
friends: *pressing me into a corner* cmon, give that jrocs stuff to Kadi (a girl which is/was my friend) here and she'll throw them into a nice shiny box rihgt here*pointing at a nasty, horrible, unclean trash can*
me: you will never take me alive!! muahahahaaaa!!! *laughing like crazy*
-----
friends: *pressing me into a corner again* now, you tell us WTF IS GOING ON WITH YOU AND ALL THESE CHINESE GIRLS!!!!?
me: neveeeeeerr!! they're japanese guys!

and so on. the thing that my friends dont accept me hearing a bot different music then i used to doesnt fit in my mind . it just doesnt fit! why dont they accept it? it's the same as they would one day turn theirselves against eating or breathing or i dont know whats important to them n their lives :souka: it's just horrible!

awwww *hugs tomino* haha my friends still don't know, but i can guess what they're reactions would be:

best friend 1: you and asian guys again!! God, you chinese humper!
me: They're japanese, not chinese! *thwaps her*
best friend 2: You are so weird. But really cute too!
me: *shifty sideways look*

----------

Oh, and my dad saw my laruku wallpaper, and he was like *no comment....don't even wanna know....*

And then my mum saw and it:

mum: which lunatics have you got on NOW?
me: don't say that! they're so cute!
mum: whatever *wanders off*

And then i told my sister about my new jrock crush (hyde) and showed her my desktop:

sis: so which one is he?
me: *points to hyde* him!
sis: *gasp* that's a guy!?
me: what are you talking about?! This is a very guy-ish picture of him!!
sis: jpop is so weird (how did she know about jpop??? 0_o)
me: they're jrock! and wait till you see the other bands....
sis: *runs away*

hehehe. So that was my family's reactions :D Wow, this was a long post :D:D

This is quite an amusing thread. Funny how things repeat themselves between teenagers and parents.
I can remember when Culture Club first came on the pop scene back in the 1980s. When my father first saw Boy George he said is that a man or a woman? Any of the 80s pop fans remember the New Romantics style? Have a look at thier dress sense. Might not be a in your face as the current trend in J-rock, but you can see the influence.
My own taste in music can be a bit left field anyway so I have always had these types of comments or conversations such as:
"Who's this?"
"It's a Japanese singer called Gackt"
"His name sounds like a cat coughing up a furball"
"Your favourite band sounds like they spent too much time smoking weed/banging their heads against something hard/manufactured tripe"

Or if it's my brother
Brother, "Silly comment about a piece of music or band"
Me, "Yeah, but you like Frank Zappa"
Brother, "Fair enough"

lol ... and you are right. *nods*
It's also quite funny that on some forums, there's a lot of talk about the attraction of androgyny, and all this "no-one understands my tastes!" and acting like it's a new thing ... Just go back in history a little, and read up on the 1920s and '30s, the "Art Deco" period and around that time ... "bisexuality" (or some pretence to it, in some cases -_-) and androgyny has been a "fashion" for quite some time (and of course in many times previous, except I don't know them so well, as Art Deco period was my specialism ><).

"It's a Japanese singer called Gackt"
"His name sounds like a cat coughing up a furball"

It's also kind of ... interesting how important people's parents' / siblings' views are to them ... I guess I see it from a different perspective because I haven't lived at home since a number of years now. But I assure you, in another 5 years or so (much less for some of you! ^^) all that sort of thing will diminish greatly in importance for you. :haihai: Sure, your parents' opinions still count for you, but it's amazing how much more tolerant both you and they can be when you don't have to share the same house!

As for friends: well, I've got friends who like many different types of music but none of them share my taste in music. It makes me sad sometimes, but we don't pick on each other about it; it's nice to have some differences too! If your friends keep picking on you about your taste in music, well, it's fine if they just do it as a joke, in a friendly way, but if they are really serious, and keep insulting you, do you really want to have them as friends at all? :okashii: We can't all like the same things but we can at least have a bit of respect!

Nice to see you here, Mycernius! :p It's good to get a different slant on things from someone who doesn't enter into these discussions so often :) (I sometimes think I'm in a different corner, as one of the few posters here who has left home! :kanashii: )

First off, I was looking at a picture of Hyde or something. In fact, I could have been just showing my mother him. I can't remember as it happened a year ago or so. Anyway, I was there, my mother was there, and pixelated!Hyde was there. That's all that's important.

"Isn't he pretty, mom?"
"No, he isn't!"
"Why not?"
"Because guys can't be pretty!"
"Why not?"
"Because it's...Weird."

That conversation (although that was such a rough version) has repeated itself a few times too. Sad really. Damned gender roles and their evilness.

As for other things, I can't remember the exact words, but my father likes calling JRock "Jap-crap", JRockers "Jap-freaks", and he used to insult their genital size a lot. Once he said they were probably only as big as his thumb or he said they were even smaller. It was very rude. My father is ever-so ignorant...:(

I also think my father thinks they're all gay as well and I think my brother called them that too. Unfortunately, I lost interest in JRock for awhile (blasphemy! I know! D: ), but I'm sure I can get some more ignorant crap out of those two as my JRock obsession comes home again.

Yay! Someone remembers me! You seriously have no idea how happy that makes me! :giggle: :hey:

And so it's not off-topic here, here's another little story I just remembered. My friend and I were watching Laruku videos and, since my brother was there, we decided to annoy him. The first video we watched was "Flower" and everytime Hyde's lower-half or full body would come on screen, we'd both yell out 'bulge!' at the same time and I would yell out 'nipple!' everytime Ken's shirt slipped off his shoulder and his nipple was shown (apparently, I was amazing at that. xD). That apparently did not make my brother happy and it showed later on. We were watching "Ready Steady Go" and, suddenly, my friend squeels out something about Hyde's crotch or something. She then spent, like, five or so minutes trying to get me to see what she had squeeled about (really quickly, well...It looked like Hyde had gotten a bit excited for a brief second there). Eventually, once I saw it, my brother was all "he's wearing a jockstrap!". I was like "Yeah...He'd so put on a jackstrap for one second in a video. Uh-huh. >.>". At the same time, I was also going "o_0" a bit as well. It was weird. :souka:

Not to be rude, but are your parents roughly in their late 30s or early 40s? Maybe you should look up to see what bands and singers they were into when they were your age? The 70s and 80s had some damn strange bands and singers. It should quieten them when you point out similarities between dress sense then and now.

Yup. They are. I know my father likes Bon Jovi, but he's not really interested in music anymore it would seem. And my mother likes country. Nevertheless, I'll try that.

...Even if I'm sure it probably won't work. Maybe with my mother (who isn't a problem to begin with), but my father has a bad listening problem. :relief:

Anyway, it wasn't rude at all and thank you for the suggestion.

EDIT: Well, I asked my dad, but apparently he didn't really listen to music when he was a child. Would explain why he has practically no interest in it now...:relief:
