Well, it has changed a lot, in the 80's the music industry didn't take seriously rock music, they preferred pop singers and some overseas artist, but rock started to gain some field, and bam!! X appeared and f*cked up the poppish music agents, opening a big industry and a huge marketing to rock.
It's hard to say if it is better or worse now: this days we have a huuuuge music scene, and lots of good and crappy bands, music has changed too, we have many music style fusions to satisfy any kind of music taste hehehe.
You know, I'm al oldie here, in my opinion, I prefer japanese 80's bands, I grew up listening to them, and I think that in those years, the best bands were created and taught everybody how things should be done in music, hahaha.
Se you later!!

Wooo go X Japan! Legends to the end hahaha. And i agree, a lot of old rock bands are really good. But i like the modern stuff too. I guess i just love rock music overall, no matter where it's from or what language it's in :D:D

@SaKeVi-Do you think people like us, ect. would like the 80's? Or is it just you? Sounds intresting.
Probably, that's where all started!! hahaha.
If you're a rocker, punk or headbanger, you will definitely love the 80's, you will get crazy with the japanese 80's music, in my opinion, those years were when the scene reached its climax, also, you will find that japanese bands were important to music styles all over the world, like grind (S.O.B. was one of the precursors of that) fastcore or well called japcore (Gauze) and also (and sorry for the U.K. lovers) a band called SS were one of the first hardcore punk bands in the whole world (they started in 1976)
Remember that the 70's and 80's brought us Loudness, Seikimatsu, X, Luna Sea, The Stalin, Anthem and so many awesome bands with fans all over the world, even before Visual Kei kind of "opened" that market.
For the Visual fans, you should check Visual Scandal, those guys were like the reminiscence of Visual in Japan, they started in 1979 and disbanded in 1985 =P

Since I have 15 and studying Japanese in high school. I wasn't into pop so naturally even with foreign songs I looked to the rock genre.
I started with the legends X and Hide... then moved to Glay and Laruku... and then Diru.
In between I've bumped on and listened to other singers and bands but they didn't make as big as an impression on me as the ones I listed.

well, my dad loves Japanese music so since i was very very little i started listened to J-rock/J-Pop... the first song i learned, the first song that i could officially say: i like that song was The fourth avenue cafe - L'arc en ciel and i was in 1996 so, i was a little 5 years old girl that liked L'arc en ciel one day my dad played songs in my room and i listened a lot more L'arc en ciel songs, then i started listening to Malice Mizer in the Gackt Era, my first MM album was Merveilles and i was like 9 years old, in 1999 Gackt left MM and Kami died, i remember that i cried so much cuz' he was my MM favorite. I started to "follow" Gackt's solo carreer but still i was too young to keep in touch with Gackt new releases so i listened my old Malice mizer and L'arc en ciel songs until 2003 when my dad gave me a Gackt CD "Moon" and i loved that CD!!! after that i got a computer and later i got Internet that was like in the middle of 2005 and i've been downloading all the songs that i didin't listen of Gackt and L'arc en ciel and checking other bands and singers, now im 14 years old and aproximately 90 Japanese Bands/Singers that i like and that i love listening. :-)

I think I was about 13/14. I found a site with streams of JPop and JRock songs and I started listening to some songs by Ayumi Hamasaki and Hitomi Yaida (because they had been recommended to me). Then I found songs by Youjeen (I love that woman) and when I looked for more rock-y stuff I started listening to L'arc~en~ciel, Luna Sea, LIV, Malice Mizer,, Dir en grey, X Japan (I think Kurenai was one of the first JRock songs I heard), Buck Tick, Penicillin, etc. And it sort of grew from there.
Since MM were one of the first bands JRock bands I heard, I guess I discovered Visual Kei around the same time, lol.
And I know for a fact that Youjeen was one of the first J-music artists I heard and she is still one of my favourites, despite her not releasing anything anymore.
